Best Of DVD Available Everywhere

Now that los stupidos Americanos (m’self included) have had the chance to catch up, it’s time to weigh in: what do we think of the BEST OF 1990-2000 DVD? Let’s have us a little release par-tay in the comments. Our favorite moment thus far? Stephane Sednaoui in the commentary on “Discotheque”: “Edge ees zo kewl!… he ees a super-pro!”

  1. Personally, I think it’s faboo. The menu navigation isn’t always flawless, and I could’ve used a little bit more info out of some of the commentaries, but on the whole it’s a great great package… it’s as exciting as I wished the album could’ve been. How about that cheapo-sounding demo of “Hands That Built America,” too?

  3. Question: Is the “History Mix” on the DVD too or just the promo DVD? Personally, I think it would be great if someone with a little technical know how(not me!) spliced it together with the ” 80’s history mix” from the Achtung Baby videos. A neat little visual history of the band…..

  5. I still say ‘Hands that built America’ has no place being on the Best of collection. It’s a blatant marketing ploy…I would’ve like to have seen The Fly on the album instead. That song totally kick started the 90’s for them! They should have put ‘Hands that built America’ at the end of the disc as a sleeper track like that did with the first Best of with putting October at the end…that would’ve been a REAL GOOD marketing ploy!!

  7. The History Mix is not on this DVD, no. Although I did find the whole extra-slot-for-the-promo-DVD thing interesting… (the packaging for the BEST OF DVD has an extra spot where you can store the promo DVD that came with the CD.)

  9. Brilliant DVD. Shame there’s no widescreen option or dolby surround option though. And I still can’t find the bl**dy easter eggs!

  11. What is with U2 and widescreen?!?!?!…Are they scared of it? They seem to always say they are on the cutting edge of technology, yet they still produce their stuff in fullscreen mode…(Rattle&Hum the exception of course)..UGH!!!! Get on the Widescreen bandwagon BOYS!!!

  13. Oh…and one more thing…I am SO WITH SPOKE ON HANDS THAT BUILT AMERICA…Edge’s whole “songs that stand the test of time” bullshit (pardon my french) speech was just nonsense…funny how i hear the fly on the radio still…guaranteed you ask a dj to play hands and they’d be “Hands that what?!?!”….poor poor poor decision on that one…

  15. All worth it for: a.) the ‘Hold Me…’ video. I love that, although all those stupid Batman clips get in the way, and b.) the Discotheque video with its silly Village People send-up.

  17. there are totally priceless bono momets on here – singing in the back of the limo with miss sarajevo – doing his best pav impression… his ham english accent at the electrical storm shoot: “don’t mind me, i’m fine! everyfin’s oar-right” as he reports from waist high water in eze.

  19. In the alternative play list options menu, the number 248.709.873 appears in 3 places. I googlized it and it come up with the number for the US population. Interesting, no? Now if someone could post how to get to the version of “One” with the running buffalo that would be cool.

  21. what the CD SHOULD have been. The omissions of The Fly, Please, Lemon, TGBHF was a travesty. This makes up for the lackluster CD. Although it still doesn’t compensate for the b sides disc full of remixes which I don’t even consider U2–they are other artists interpretaions of u2 music.

  23. Does anyone else have a problem with the main menu? It worked at first but now when I hit “enter” on special features or credits, the DVD stops. Then when I hit play again, it goes to the “Even Better Than The Real Thing” screen. Anyone else or just me? Thanks!

  25. my favorite part of the dvd is the director’s comments. i think the funniest thing is how each director thinks he’s messed up the video and thinks the band hates him. the best is the staring at the sun video and the french director dude on mysterious ways. priceless stuff. but thankfully it is not priceless, it is $17.99 at your local Best Buy.

  27. Im so jealous. I have to wait until Christmas to get it. As for the 248.709.873, it is the USA population and I think its on there just as a reference to the video segments during the Zoo TV live version of Until The End of the World where numbers flashed on the screens. Sounds like a good theory. 🙂

  29. Chris, NO, it’s not just you. I have problems as you described. And even more frustrating, if I choose a track via Track Selection, click on the director’s name, it sometimes gives me the Commentary version, rather than the video. Very frustrating

  31. $17.99 !!!!! ?????? It’s thirty bloody euros over here in Ireland…

  33. 🙂 Got mine yesterday and it costed only 15 euro’s !!! We have a very cool place in town which buys all new cd’s and dvd’s directly in the US and that’s how he manages to cut the prices 🙂
Anyway, about the dvd I have the same comments as others: no surround sound, no wide screen, two of the most important improvements for dvd over vhs. But the choice of clips is nice, the extra documentaries are nice and overall it’s nice. No surprises or anything, but they really should have left out THTBA, especially this studio version sounds very bad. Oh, and the menu works fine on my player. What I like about the menu is that they made a simple back-button. You don’t need to search for it, just press the back arrow 🙂

  35. Hmmm… I must be the only person that’s delighted with THTBA being on both the album and DVD – I love that song!

Plus, I think its cool that the video is an earlier version of the track – I like the atmosphere of their performance.

    Maybe I’m just mad 🙂

  37. No widescreen because all the videos weren’t made for widescreen originally. There’s no good way creating a widescreen version out of it.

Same thing with the sound. It was recorded in stereo, so a 5.1 soundtrack is pointless. Only thing i can think of is having the sound in there at higher quality: 48 khz (which is better than CD)

  41. Great DVD, but….after watching/listening to “Hands That Built America”, I have to wonder: Why is U2 going to release this as a single? As a song on a soundtrack that goes unnoticed by joe-average-U2 listener, I can accept it (like a b-side), but releasing this song and video as a single is a bad idea, in my opinion (a 20-year, die-hard fan). There are only a very few U2 songs I don’t like, and this one is at the top of the list now. And yes, I am a proud American, I don’t mind all the “America” songs, in fact I love ’em, but “Hands” is so contrived and the video only makes it worse. Otherwise, the DVD is fantastic! Please, bring us more DVDs!

  43. Ditto on Hands That Built America. It smacks of pretentiousness… something that U2 are fully capable of turning into a positive trait! But it’s just a little too, “We’re going to create some atmosphere here now…”. But the DVD overall has to be one of the best discs out there. The quality of the menus and graphics, etc. are just fantastic. Then, of course, there’s the content itself (the music videos) which, up until now have just been vaguely available on the internet in realvideo or mpg format which is pretty bad. Give me “Staring At The Sun” any day. Incredible package.

  45. oh yeah, and what’s with The Edge’s dorky keyboards in the intro of Hands? Does this sound like a Casio toy keyboard to anyone else?

  47. dude, i’ll take “stateless” or “falling at your feet” any day over THTBA. what does it mean anyway? does it imply that the gangs of NY were the hands that built america. sucks to be an american then. oh shit! i guess i have to watch the movie to find out…on second though i’d better not. i heard leo decrapio falls off the titanic and drowns in this movie too. that’s so cliche. maybe he’ll find howie B at the bottom of the Atlantic too.

  49. EASTER EGG…FYI…If you go to “Last Night on Earth” in the bonus track area, from the SMYTH rollover, press up, up, left, left and you will highlight the third box from the top on the left hand side. From there, press enter and you will go to an outtake from the video shoot with the old man pulling his sword and saying something to the effect, “I bring not peace, but a sword”. The total piece is about 30 sec.

  53. I actually love “Hands”, but I agree, releasing it as a single would be a mistake. I can imagine it playing as the credits roll by, but it doesn’t scream “single material” to me.

DVD itself is fantastic; my only gripe is with whoever designed the interface graphics for directors’ commentaries. I hate it when designers put pointless “cool”-looking icons that give me -no- clue whatsoever as to what they actually stands for.

  55. I like Hands lyrically, but agree that that keyboard sound is baad.. i think it sounds like a glockenspiel. and not in a good way. And I too have to wait until Christmas to get the DVD… I’m sad now.

  57. I found the easter egg in 2 places…1st time I accidentally hit the back button right at the end of the One documentary. I wanted to move onto the Miss Sarajevo documentary so I hit the forward key which took me directly to the easter egg and not the MS doc. The other way is to play around with the squares on the screen that list the video of Last Night and the director’s name. You’ll find the same scene both ways. I’ve looked around and haven’t gotten any other ones yet. I haven’t had a chance to see the PC easter egg yet. As for the Hands video…isn’t that the worst lip sync job by Bono you’ve ever seen? For those who have to wait for Santa to deliver the DVD, it’ll be worth the wait!!!

  59. Can’t get it till X-mas, but hey that’s alright, but with The Hands that Built America… I like it. Contrived, sure, pretentious? naw… I looked through a book from Lewis Hines, a photographer who focused on immigration to America in the early 1900’s, and found the song captured the feeling in the faces of those immigrants. “You gotta live with your dreams, don’t make them so hard…” Sure that’s contrived, but still a good line. But hey,I also liked the remix of Discoteque, so what do I know.

  61. Can’t get it because Chavez has not left Venezuela. He should go to Cuba with Fidel Castro! F***in’ communist and terrorist! People of USA: HELP TO SAVE VENEZUELA FROM CHAVEZ, PLEASE!!
    US ARMY, INVADE US, PLEASE!!

  67. I rather enjoy the dvd (though it is a bit short on extras/easter eggs).

a few thoughts: 1) i’m really glad Stephane Sednaoui didn’t have time for the “Discotheque” shot w/ Bono’s mouth shot through the tube. 2) i’m glad they never finshed the version of “One” w/ the buffalos and the band…i think it would have been as bad as the version of “Pride” w/ the close ups. 3) The video for “Hands” isn’t any worse than “Beautiful Day” (and really, the song is no worse than “Trip Through Your Wires”). 4) Why didn’t Morleigh do a director’s commentary for her video of “SATS”?

  69. Got the DVD (US) and me likes. However I’ve also encountered nothing but problems when I try to access the special features. The DVD actually stops playing every time. I know a couple of people have had this problem…could it be that its a problem with the US release, only a few that were “pressed”, or is my DVD player? Toshiba 2109???? UGHHHHH

  73. You guys need to listen to the commentary for EBTTRT…the comment the director makes right at the beginning of the video as the “super” words start flying through is absolutely priceless. Here’s a hint..it has to do with clenching.
