A CD single of ‘The Hands That Built America’ will be released on
February 17th, coinciding with the the European premiere of the film Gangs of New York.
More info on this and the soundtrack release and mix of the song from U2wanderer.org: “The Hands that Built America (Theme from Gangs of New York): Written and performed by U2. Featuring Sharon Corr, Violin and Andrea Corr, Tin Whistle. Produced by the Edge.”
Betcha $20 I never hear it on the radio in Indiana. How can they make room for it, what with all the provocative and groundbreaking singles by Christina Aguilera and Nickleback?

Well, I read about the release in the U2Fanclub magazine Exit, so credits where credits are due: Loek, Margreet and Margreth.

Wonder what the b-sides will be… will this be the Gangs Of New York soundtrack version or the Best Of version? I heard on @U2 that the two were mixed differently and that one of the more noticible things in the soundtrack version is that the xylophone is alot more subtle in the chorus… wonder if this version is arranged like the 30 second clip was awhile back on U2.com. Has the soundtrack version of the song leaked yet?

I still don’t like the song. When will U2 make again something good?

Yourj perception of good might be someone else’s perception of bad. Ah… the beauty of subjectivity!

It’s a good song in the beginning.. then Bono ruins it with his crappy singing. Why does he have to shout out the lyrics towards the end of every song nowadays? It doesn’t suit his voice anymore. It can’t handle such high notes, so lay off Bono! It could’ve been a great song.

Bono has “crappy singing”? I don’t think there is a singer or performer in the world that would label Bono a “crappy” singer today or yesterday!!
Luciano P thinks he has “a vocal quality that no modern or past rock star comes close to”.
The high notes are fine, your perception is one of anti-anthem or anti-climax…Bono’s 2 “Americas” at the end are as good as it gets! Rock on U2 fans as the anthems will always be the focus and the true colors of this band!!

It is a very good song. It will probably get an Oscar nod and lose to a Randy Neuman tune. Electrical Storm and “Hands” are not the the direction that U2 is going with its new LP “Hanover Quay” (working title) The songs you are looking for will probably be “Original of the Species and “Full Metal Jacket” U2 has vowed to “rock hard” on the LP in progress. Bono is a magnificent singer and I don’t think U2 has EVER put out one track that could be considered crap. They are a legendary band….period.

Actually, deagol, I like Bono’s singing on the tune, even the fake-opera part. It’s a departure from their other stuff, and the versatility that it represents I guess is part of why I like it.

Hey Smitty, I agree it will get a nod at the oscars, but… You didn’t do your research before making the comment of it losing to a Randy Newman tune. Randy Newman has been snubbed by the oscars since the beginning of his recording career. This past year was the first time ever that he has won an Oscar.

try using some punctuation. i can’t understand a word of what you just said….and this song is only being released to coincide with the upcoming movie. i don’t see why people are getting all worked up for a single that is there to tide us over til the next album. give the guys a break.

James,
I dont need research to know the great Randy Newman has nominated about 18 times and finally won. My point is that U2 will get snubbed as well. Its a good song. The stuff they are working on now is better and a better direction. As for you people who want to slag U2 for choosing to release a single, go get on the Wang Chung website. I to am a fan since 1980. Like Mike, deagol etc. If U2 thought for a second this song was crap…they wouldnt put it out. Most of the pop kids dont realise that. Like Bono says…(pop kids)WE DON’T NEED THEM..

i think the worst way to get rid of the “pop kids” is to call an album POP. And didn’t they say they were going up against the pop groups w/ ATYCLB? Maybe they felt they needed those pop kids afterall.

This is my last post on this subject. “We” (the longtime fans) and “they” (U2) DO NOT need teenage fans A. at the gigs B. to buy the record or C. talking about U2 when they have no clue what they are talking about! Long live “Hands that Built America” and every single they have put out since 1980’s “Out of Control” and every single they put out until they call it a day! Time for a lager! All you pop kids….go drink some POP and go to the N’SYNC website!

Teens have the right to listen to U2 as well as anyone else. I am sure you all agree. And we all
agree that U2 keep us guessing and rarely disappoint. I can’t wait for the next album…Happy Holidays all!

Smitty, I thought that coming up with new music to wow the long-term fans and entice new ones is what U2 is about. A fan is a fan, and they are entitled to their opinion.

I love U2 from Boy to today, and I simply think that “Hands” is one of their least memorable and resonant songs. It’s rare for a U2 track, but I wouldn’t listen to it more than two, maybe three times…so I’ll go throw in my copy of Zooropa instead and enjoy. What’s so horrible about that?

OK, you all must be really grumpy what with Christmas and all that. I don’t like the tone of these messages, and I’m not willing to have this type of banter go on on our website. Tone it down, please.
