THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME AND MUSEUM PROUDLY ANNOUNCES A RETROSPECTIVE ON U2
“IN THE NAME OF LOVE: TWO DECADES OF U2” OPENING FEBRUARY 8
CLEVELAND (January 8, 2003) — The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum proudly announces an upcoming retrospective on the Irish rock band U2. Titled IN THE NAME OF LOVE: Two Decades of U2, the comprehensive exhibit will open on February 8 and run through September 2003.
“U2 is one of the most important rock bands of the past two decades. They have made brilliant music and they possess a unique kind of integrity and social conscience,” said James Henke, Vice President of Exhibitions and Curatorial Affairs. “I’m delighted that they are being so cooperative, and I think this exhibit will be a special treat for their fans.”
The exhibit will include more than two dozen pieces of clothing, going back to outfits from the 1983 War tour to costumes from U2’s most recent tours and videos. The new exhibit will also include instruments from all four band members, original lyric manuscripts, stage set designs, personal correspondence and video and animation cells. The Museum also has a large collection of artifacts from the band that have been on loan to the Museum since it opened in 1995, as well as costumes from Bono that were featured in the Rock Style exhibit in 2000. These materials will be incorporated into the new exhibit.
The exhibit will consume the top three floors of the Museum. From February 8 through May 2003, the fourth floor will feature an exhibit of U2 photographs by Anton Corbijn. Over thirty photographs of U2 taken by the world-famous photographer between the early 1980s and today will be on exhibit.
From June through September 2003, the fourth floor will house an exhibit dedicated to the “look” of U2 over the years. Artwork from designer Steve Averill and his team at Four 5 One, who have been working with U2 from the very beginning, will be featured in this part of the exhibit. The exhibit will include album cover concepts that have never used as well as many other looks that U2 has gone through.
IN THE NAME OF LOVE: Two Decades of U2 will open on Saturday, February 8 at 6:30 p.m. with a special preview party. This party is open to Museum members and their guests. Tickets are $15.00 and go on sale Monday, January 13 through Ticketmaster and at the Museum box office. Tickets are limited. Members must show their membership card at the door for entry to the party. The event will include a special viewing of the U2 exhibit, a short lecture by James Henke, Vice President of Exhibitions and Curatorial Affairs, light hors d’oeuvres, drinks and more.
In addition, a special U2 fan celebration is in the works for Spring 2003.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum exists to educate its visitors, fans and scholars from around the world about the history and significance of rock and roll music. The Museum carries out this mission through its efforts to collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret this art form.
Among the artifacts featured in IN THE NAME OF LOVE: Two Decades of U2 are:
-The leather jacket worn by Bono during the Super Bowl XXXVI half-time performance in 2001. A trademark for the Elevation Tour 2001, the inside of the jacket is lined with an American flag.
-Stetson Bono wore during the Joshua Tree tour and is featured on the cover of Rattle & Hum.
-Studded jeans and #7 shirt that The Edge wore during the Elevation Tour 2001
-The first U2 shirt, made by drummer Larry Mullen, Jr.
-The Irish Falcon Gretsch guitar Bono used during much of the Elevation Tour 2001
-First place trophy for a battle of the bands U2 won in 1978
-Production notes from Daniel Lanois
-A collection of promotional and merchandise items from over the years
-Fanzines and other fan-related memorabilia
Original lyric manuscripts, spanning U2’s entire career, including “The Ocean,” “Bad,” “Indian Summer Sky,” “When Love Comes to Town,” “Stay (Faraway, So Close!)” and revised “New York” lyrics after September 11, 2001.

Definitely going, just a matter of when. Anyone know what this special fan event they mention in the Spring is?

I wonder if Henry Rollins will be the first in line at Cleveland. He seems to have a lot of free time on his hands.

Cleveland blows. Why can’t the hall be somewhere useful, like DC? Oh well. The band gets all this stuff back after the exhibit closes, right? I mean, I don’t think Bono can afford to lose that Stetson for too long. And Edge’s #7 shirt. He’ll feel lost without it.

I wonder if this exhibit will go on tour? Knowing my luck my local museum will be featuring ‘In the Name of whining: A decade of Henry Rollins’

I agree with lucy. Why can’t the museum be in DC? I live just north of there. Damn! Hopefully people who visit will take a lot of pictures and post them on some U2 websites 🙂

Hey now, I’m in DC too, but hail from Cleveland! It will be a sort of homecoming.

We are going. Have been planning this trip ever since I saw an announcement several months ago on another U2 website that it would happen. BTW, there are very cheap airfares available from DC to Cleveland. AND the exhibit runs until Sept. so you have plenty of time. See ya in Cleveland, Henry!!!!

Alan Freed termed the phrase “rock and roll.” He was a DJ in Cleveland.
