Two of U2’s longtime collaborators, the production duo Lanois and Eno, are in the news this week. Daniel Lanois’ new solo album “Shine” (his first in ten years) is scheduled for release in April on the Anti label (more at daniellanois.com), while Eno contributes a piece to Time Magazine. I’m really looking forward to more from Lanois; if you ever stumble upon the album Acadie, buy it. But I also tire of European artistes and intellectuals criticizing America when the only solutions they apparently offer are socialism and appeasing dictators — to the surprise of absolutely no one.

I got Wrecking Ball for Christmas. Lovely languid, layered, and lots of other l-words that don’t do it justice.

Socialism and dictators!?! I assume i was reading the same text and for me Mr. Eno spoke wise words indeed. Must’ve been touched a nerve…

Eno did say that free nationalized health care was a sign of civilization, and that America “stop making enemies and start making friends.” Saddam Hussein, for example, doesn’t like weapons inspectors, economic sanctions, or no-fly-zones. I take it Eno thinks we should stop all these things to “make friends.” That is the essense of appeasement.

Bubba, when Eno says “start making friends” I don’t think he’s talking about Saddam Hussein.

I sincerely hope you’re right, but there’s nothing in the article to suggest that Eno admits that there are exceptions to the general rule of “making friends.”
