The drummer talks

Larry Mullen guest presented Irish designer Lainey Keogh’s collection at the Brown Thomas Fashion Show in Dublin last night.

Many eyebrows were raised when, asked by host Cat Deely what U2 were up to, Larry answered – live on Irish television: “Same shit, different decade”. He seemed embarrassed at the crowd’s response.

Larry continued to reveal he had not been invited to the Golden Globe Award show.

The male celeb models, including The Edge were led by Gavin Friday, who walked down the stage to the end of the catwalk, unzipped his pants and kneeled as a 6ft inflatable spire, with red light on top popped up from between his legs. Edge exuded cool, while Guggi finished the set with his 5 sons – including toddler in pram.

  1. Ouch. Larry is my personal favorite but here he lacks some professionality I’m afraid. I can understand that you’re upset about the fact that it’s always Bobo and Edge (like Larry and Adam don’t exist…) but this is not smart.
Furthermore, if Larry says “same shit, different decade” it might mean that he doesn’t like what they’re doing now or that he doesn’t like that Edge is in charge or something… Let’s hope it all turns out well.

  3. that really pisses me off that larry and adam weren’t invited, the nomination said it clearly music and lyrics by U2, not by bono and edge,

  5. I think Larry’s comment was funny! I think he meant that they were still a band, still making music as they have done decade after decade. Sorta like bragging rights if you ask me. 😉

  7. Like Larry would have enjoyed the Golden Globe Award show!? And I think that with “same shit, different decade” Larry refers to what Bono and Edge always explain in a complex way; “We are now in the process of writing songs. Edge rediscovered the guitar. It all sounds powerfull” like “same shit, different decade”…

  9. i think we shouldn’t read too deeply into everything they say. it’s like when people ask you in the mornings at work “how are you doing?” and everyone just says they’re fine, because thats what you’re supposed to do (except for that one bastard who actually has the nerve to tell how his day really was and keeps you waiting for like 10minutes while your coffee gets cold) and it’s a bit flippant so hence funny.

  11. Guys, i think you’re reading a bit too much into that comment. If Larry is like most drummers I know, his job is to “keep it real”. Edge and Bono can spout off poetically about what masterpieces they’re coming up with these days but Larry’s got it right. He just doesn’t give a shit about if he looks cool or is a rock star or what. And I love him for that. He’s got balls for being so blunt on TV. Very PUNK ROCK there, Larry!

  13. I think it was hilarious. Larry is such a refreshing antidote to Bono’s rhetoric. I remember on the VH1 Legends program they were talking about the first rehearsal ever, and Bono says, in about 1000 words, “It was extraordinary.” Cut to Larry: “We were just godawful.” 🙂

  15. I don’t think we should over-analyze the situation. Would Larry have gone if he was invited? Would he have wanted to go? Maybe. Maybe not. I like Larry because he is himself most all the time. Sometimes Bono’s act gets really tired. Larry doesn’t have an act, (he never claimed to) so it’s cool.

  17. I wish that some of Larry’s attitude would rub off on Bono. Wait a minute, scratch that. Make it a lot of Larry’s attitude.

  19. Larry should lighten up! I like Bono’s optimism and enthusiam much more than Larry’s jaded, cynical perspective. Even if it is just his media schtick, such comments make him seem like a jerk.

  21. i love larry. i didn’t read too much into that statement, and agree with carmella and nillahgirl. larry shows the other personalities of the band that most people don’t get to hear because bono is always the one talking (not saying its a bad thing). As was said, Larry’s got balls to say what he wants to.

  23. Same shit different decade could be used to describe Larry’s attitude. He’s the most standoffish, too good for you, cold and aloof to the fans of all of them. No wonder he’s not invited. Bono and Edge have better personalities and are warm and inviting. People like them more. I’m kind of cynical myself so I understand where Larry is coming from, but he should understand how it makes him look to the public and not get sore.

  25. I want to add that I do like Larry, and he’s a lot like me in some ways so I understand him. I don’t mean to bash him, honestly. But what I’m saying is if he feels this way it’s best to stay away from interviewers and the media rather than look like a snob. I know he hates bullshit and phonies so he’d never be fake and kiss anyone’s ass and say things he didn’t really mean, but sometimes, like the old folks say, if you can’t say anything nice best not speak up at all.

  27. oh my god.. Larry can say what the fuck he wants. sometimes it astonishes me how ridicoulosly prude and easily-offended people can be. Larry has a great sense of humour, apparantly a few here lacks it completely.

  29. From a conversation I had with Bono on Dec 11, 1997: “Larry? Larry’s always unhappy. He’s just a crank.”

  31. Oh Lar. I suppose it can get a bit old being ‘the pretty drummer’, and I can’t imagine constantly having to defend/ explain your work to every monkey holding a mic or a tape recorder. Maybe he was just having a bad day. Never taken to the celeb spotlight well, has our Larry.
