U2 in Studio

U2 are working on their new album in Dublin. They are working together and separately in the studio.

After the Brown Thomas show, Edge returned to the studio on Friday the 24th for long session, working on his own.

Adam told the fans the band are already considering the next tour and he promised the (French) fans more dates in France than the band played in 2001.

Bono said they’re working very hard for the next album, and have even started recording some of the final compositions.

  5. It should be interesting. This new album should be interesting. Looking back over the past decade….. Zooropa was alterna-rock. Pop was dance-rock, sort of. ATYCLB was pop-R&B-country-rock. It’s been a while since they’ve done an album that’s 100% PURE rock, probably not since Achtung. That’s my opinion at least. …… I think that it’s time for them to strike out for something new and fresh, if they’re to remain relevant. ….. Metal might not be a bad idea. It might even keep them in the game against the newer guitar bands. Metal is not really them though. Bono doesn’t quite have that sinister rage needed for metal, at least not on the surface. ….. If anything, they should bring back the raw instrumental sound of War and combine it with the cryptic lyrics of Achtung. Wait a second. That sounds like PUNK!!!! That’d be a great idea, especially considering their roots and love for the Ramones. …… BTW, how many of you wanna bet that Bono’s going to write a song about the Columbia shuttle? Kinda predictable, eh?

  7. I’ll bet you my first U2 purchase ever (a frayed second-hand cassette of Achtung Baby) that Bono doesn’t write about the Columbia shuttle. That’s not his style. He doesn’t deal artistically with random tragedies, only one spurring from senseless violence.

  9. Er, how is AB “100% pure rock”? Love Is Blindness, So Cruel, Trying to Throw Your Arms…, even One are all on the much softer, ballad-like side, and that’s a whole third of the album.

  11. I think going back to War style would be exactly what I would like. It’s time they wrote an unabashed political protest record. There is enough crap going on in the world to supply several albums worth of desparate rage. I think the problem with rock these days is that it tends to be too introspective. Every rock band is writing about their own little world and as a result rock is losing relevence. I think rock needs to reclaim its protest heritage and U2 should lead the way.

  13. I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for WAR-like protest on the next record. To me it looks like Bono believes that he’ll have more chance on changing the world through his political work rather than through his singing. And personally I never cared for shrill political rantings, be it WAR or Rage Against the Machine.

  15. I do think you have a point Rob. Bono tends to write with passions from any source that moves him. Be it love or tragedy if it stirs him and he has time before the next release (which I hope is sooner rather than later)he will write about it. Don’t fret much about the new release being relevant. Thats a no brainer. With that said, I am giddy with anticipation….

  21. War album is definitely not shrill political ranting. Rage Against The Machine may be another story :). That’s why I’d like to see U2 be the one to do something like that. They can be political in their music and be passionate about it and yet do it in an artistic, intelligent way. The War album brings me as close as I ever hope to being a refugee in a war-torn land. The feelings and expressions in that album are so vivid that it feels almost real. The stories of that album are so basic and yet so powerful that it is undeniable. That’s what U2 is all about to me. … ATYCLB and the Elevation tour got them back to being ‘the best rock band in the world’. They have everyone’s ear. I want them to speak their minds in song.

  23. Granted, my impression of WAR’s shrillness has more to do with the music and Bono’s banshee screaming and wailing that’s just too raw on my ears rather than the lyrics, so I probably shouldn’t have put it into the same bag as Rage Against the Machine. But that album still makes me feel as if my head is being repeatedly hit with a sledgehammer.

  25. Here, here Yael Katz! As much as I enjoyed going to Ireland for the Slane shows, let’s hope U2 include Australia/NZ on their next tour itinerary. =)

  27. Another album like War? I’d rather not have a second rate Clash album if it was up to me. What I would like is anything that doesn’t sound like the rubbish that is ATYCLB. I want an album that has rock tunes that truly rock. Mofo, Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me, Discotheque, Until the End of the World. With synth and drum machines or just the standard guitar, bass and drums sound… I don’t care, it just has to rock. No lame pop songs run through a fuzz box like Elevation.

  29. wouldn’t an acoustical heavy album be nice. the old men can strip it down, show us some skills, without those enhancers. after all, bono is as bald as james taylor. . .

  33. Hrm… I think Mofo and Discotheque are more techno than rock… the original version of Discotheque, anyway. I think an acoustic album would be a BIG mistake. Oh, and the ATYCLB bashing is getting old. Complain all you want, the album putthem back on the map.

  35. ATYCLB did put them back on the map. It also is as big as Achtung Baby in that it has given them a “third act,” so to speak. Look at it this way: 1988/89 – the boys were suffering from the backlash of Rattle & Hum. AB came out, kicked everyone’s asses and gave them the push to get through most of the 90s. Then Pop came along (which I DO like) and again, the band had to deal with backlash. Cut to ATYCLB and its strength and the band now has yet another decade in front of them. I’d say look for something experimental – like a Zooropa, except more harsh, slightly punkish. Of course they might go with a techno-tinged-folksy-polka-driven-spoken-word album next….

  39. Personally, I never quite understood why people (even U2 themselves) thought Pop as a “techno” album…Just one question DudeLove721, do you even know what techno sounds liked? Listen to Confusion by Marco Carola then listen to Discotheque and then explain to me how they are REMOTELY similar!!! (Sorry, comparing U2 to techno is just a BIG pet peeve of mine)

  41. Chris, I was going to ask him the same question. Does he even know what techno sounds like? Techno is merely a part of the entire electronic genre. And yes, Discotheque sounds nothing like techno. It’s filled with beeps and squeeks uses a drum machine, synth and just about everything is looped. Still, at the center of all that is guitar (albeit sounds nothing like one) bass and drums. The song just rocks hard. It rocks infinitely harder than Elevation (the supposedly big rock tune of that album.) I know DudeLove, I’m sorry, but I love getting in that extra ATYCLB putdown.

  43. who is or will be the producer? mike hedges or william orbit? i prefer the former. or both or none of them? u2 tend to record with a producer in the studio, so i think it’s not so hard to find out. i like nellee hooper, you know ‘hold me…’ is such a great song, although i know he has no chance. i dont know why they kicked him out in the ‘pop’ session. ‘pop’ would be a much much better album with ‘hold me…’. big mistake.

  45. I’m curious about that too, especially if they are at the point where they’re recording some final versions. Perhaps the band is self-producing or maybe Mr. The Edge is doin’ it himself this time?

  47. They should get Lillywhite back. He knows their style and he’s good with their more raw sound.

  49. Yes, I do know what techno is. And I just mis-phrased what I said, perhaps. Mofo and Discotheque are alot closer to techno than rock. Or at least what the definition of rock is. I think a song like Elevation is alot more Rock’n’Roll than Discotheque is.

  55. I don’t know about them having a whole third decade ahead of them: this one is gonna be nearly half over by the time the next album comes out. Which isn’t to diss the band or their album, of course.

What’s the bet it just rocks in a fairly u2 sort of way. This isn’t a hard rock band we are dealing with and really, ‘rock’ is a fairly pointless label in so far as a lot of music is ‘rock’ but doesn’t really rock anything. Or roll it.

It’s hard to even know where their heads are at, I don’t really know if I’d make too much of their published comments that crop up from time to time.
