Bono is slamming manufactured pop…again. Today’s Mirror quotes Bono as saying manufactured TV pop stars like David Sneddon and Girls Aloud are “occupying too much air time. I would like to pick them up and bite their heads off. When people look back they are going to remember Coldplay, Oasis, and Ms Dynamite. They are going to remember real artists, the others are a distraction.”

I rooted for David Sneddon to win FameAcademy (he did). Sneddon rules. Silly Bono. 🙂

Right on Bono! People *will* remember great bands like Oasis, Coldplay, and others. And oh, a small outfit called U2.

I agree with Bono whole heartedly I don’t believe Sneedon will be around in 20 years time.

People like shit music. People are dumb.

No doubt shite music is tortue to the ears, but it does have a place within the industry. It reminds us of how lucky we are to have bands like U2, Coldplay, etc., who are true artists making pretty damn fine music.

normally I take Bono’s words as gospel (joke) but I disagree about wee David – he did write his own song, and he does have talent. I wont buy his album tho. 😀

Popmusic is essential. It’s the cake. Now, U2 and other *artists*, that’s the icing on the cake. But Kylie, Take That and other Top 40 people… sweet seductive cake. I couldn’t live without it. Well, I could. But it’d be dull.

Funny Bono should say this when he mugs with Kylie, Andrea Corr, flirted with Jennifer Lopez heavily years ago at an MTV awards show and goes on national television and declares that Destiny’s Child is one of the best groups in the world! Mindless pop music is a distraction… unless the chick is hot.

ah yes… but Riiight, Destiny’s Child may be pop, but they’re not manufactured. They write and produce all their songs. The Corrs also write and perform their own material.
And Bono is talking about TV Popstars… maybe that’s where his argument is coming from.

Bono is not against POP… I know what he means, and iam sad that this problem exists everywhere, not just in our country, where the real artist dont have enough place in the music industry… There are too much shit around here! K

“The truth is not the same without the lies he made up.”
The crap makes the flowers smell even sweeter.

The sad thing with ‘crap’ music, is that with the state of the world today, there are enough people that like it and so make it a great payoff for some CEO schmuck.
I LOVE BONO!
U2 ROCK!

Bono never hid his love for -good- pop music; he just probably hates the crap that gives pop music a bad name.

I’m 100% with Bono on this one… think about that Las Ketchup song *shudders* and now that cheeky girls song or whatever its called, what kind of people buy those singles? Also what the hell is that Avril fucking Lavigne? How punkrock(NOT) she is. I’m damn sure she’s manufactured also, by a record lable to counter all those britney/christina girlies who are also pretty much manufactured… I dunno whats wrong with the (music)world today… like this song I’m now listening too is called:
Whatever happened to my rock n roll?

i also dislike avril lavigne, and am baffled at how long christina aguilera and britney spears have lasted. but they can’t last much longer, because they are all about image, not talent.

reply to BJR’s “what kind of people buy those singles?”————–
Young girls (ages 2-11) buy Las Ketchup and Britney Spears.

I agree that pop music is cake, but what U2 and Coldplay do is not mere icing on the cake: it’s MEAT. It is the music that sustains.

whatever happened to rock and roll-? I’m not worried. There has been crap pop music as long as there has been radio. It’s not a new phenomenon. I’ve just become immune to the “next big thing” phenomenon. Chronology doesn’t affect me. I spend more time listening to music from the late 70s and early 80s than anything (and I’m 21). There’s good stuff out there still, getting recorded and released, you just can’t depend on radio to deliver it. That said, I enjoy a dose of sugar pop here and there. Just a little dose, though. 🙂

I’d also like to congratulate Cindy on a great three-way pun on the title to this news item. 🙂

dave, if you’re American, you probably never heard the las ketchup song. Thank goodness! Sony pushed it hard to be the new annoying inescapable dance song (think macarena), but it never took hold in America. I find that really, really wonderful. 😛

Unfortunately, a few of those bands that make deep intelligent music ARE forgotten (In radio for ex., The Cure, long gone in Texas, Nine Inch Nails, not remotely the powerhouse commercially that they used to be, sure old NIN gets played, but you NEVER hear anything off the last brilliant album)… Commercial sucsess is a big factor in these bands getting their props… Not that the music isn’t great, but without the fans, it seems to me, it just isn’t fair to the groups… Did that make sense???

Bono & The Edge were interviewed by Cat Deeley in the Point Depot Dublin & it was shown on ITV CD:UK show on Saturday 1st Feb 2003.The comments have been taken from that interview which lasted for approx 5mins.Bono didn’t actually mention David Sneddon by name so don’t believe all you read! The interview was relaxed & fun to watch.Did anyone else see it?
