Calla is three-piece band (“Chris Isaak meets Nick Cave”) from Texas who covered U2’s Promenade on their album Scavengers (Young God Records, 2001), produced by no one less than Michael Gira (ex-The Swans). You can listen to a fragment of the song here, or order the album.

Promenade has always been one of my favorite lesser known U2 songs. The only part I don’t like is Bono muttering “Coca-Cola, football, radio, radio…” at the end.

Yikes. The lead singer of Calla may want to work on the ol’ pipes.

Calla, unfortunately, is kinda bad. I saw them open up for Interpol in December, and they were…well, as dull as music gets.
The “Promenade” cover is an interesting novelty, though.
You can hear the full thing at their MP3.com page, actually.

A great U2 song but a terrible cover.

That did nothing for me…apart from getting me to play the original! I don’t think there is another U2 song that (personally) evoked a period in time the same way that ‘Promenade’ does.

man, the between-albums and between-Bono’s-attempts-to-save-the-world period really blows. We haven’t a juicy bit of U2 news in ages. Oh well. They might resurface around the Grammys.

Right on Lucy, I was just thinking this has got to be the most boring time in U2 history… Long way away from a new album, long time since a tour, and the last album was a (granted it was killer), best of, this is the SLOW period for sure!!! Zoo TV on DVD would sure liven things up!!!

I second the ZooTV DVD idea, ryan 🙂

Yikes! The singer might have at least got the words right… Please U2 help us up off our knees…the tender trap of U2 desolation is causing us to listen anything remotely related to you. Help us!!!

As a huge U2 fan I came across this site recently. I totally disagree with all of you on this. I just took a listen and, wow, thought it was a great cover and would make Bono proud. No they are not U2 and I don’t think they are trying to be.
