U2 on Today

On Tuesday’s TODAY show, Katie Couric announced that Bono and The Edge will perform “The Hands That Built America” later this month on the show. Couric said the performance is an exclusive for TODAY and that she believes the performance will be “exciting.”

  1. everthing is “exciting” to the perky Katie Couric. I bet that she gets star struck & forgets her lines the moment she intros them.

  3. Nevertheless this one is exciting. 🙂 Wonder if this will be indoor or outdoor, if the latter guess I should plan on a very very early morning, hopefully on a slow, warmish workday. (g)

  5. U2 don’t need talkshows to promote their music. Talkshows need U2 to promote them and rack in the viewers. I personally would love to see U2 never do a TV gig again…unless its the Grammy’s.

  7. I think that the obvious point is being missed. U2 could perform on Good Day New York and it wouldn’t change the agenda, which is to keep them fresh in the minds of the Oscar people. Like their pre-Grammy stunts, this is a performance dedicated to lobbying more than showmanship, not that U2 will fail to deliver. … … … As for not wanting U2 to do anymore TV performances, I agree. It’s really not the thing that the stereotypical rock star would do. Still, U2 are the people’s band. Why not give the people what they want? Plus, it’s an opportunity for them to thumb their collective noses at the younger bands that think that their too big for TV. Screw the self-important chowder heads. =)

  9. Yeah, but the TODAY show is on from like 6:00 A.M. to 8:00 or 9:00! This is just as bad as those dumb VH1 countdowns. You practically have to watch the whole thing to catch the good part.

  11. “Who cares about Katie why are people attacking her? If you are a true U2 fan it shouldn’t matter.”

Ah yes, the old “true fan” BS that translates to “act as a sheep.” God do I hate it when people talk about being a “true fan” as if they have any freaking clue how anyone else feels. I think I can like U2 and NOT approve of their appearance without contradicting myself. OK Sandy?

  13. Rachel D. – Can fairly well guarantee that they won’t perform during the 7AM (6AM Central) hour, just watch after 8/7 Central, they never have music that first hour, and it’s more likely it’ll be the 8:30-9 (7:30-8) segment that they’ll perform.

  15. Hey, I just look forward to every opportunity to see them thats all. It shouldn’t matter what program they are on. But to each there own.

  19. all I can say is, I watched Katie Couric interview Bruce Springsteen and the whole E St. Band, and it was pretty painful. Luckily it was brief – they devoted the next half hour to the band’s performance. In classic Springsteen form, “Glory Days” stretched on for a mild eternity, but no one told the director that Bruce is known for that kind of thing, so the cameras kept doing the “end of the song pan away to crowd” thing over and over. It was hilarious.
