An anti-war protest in Dublin drew approximately 50,000 people to the city center on Saturday. Demonstrators marched through the city to the Department of Foreign Affairs to voice their opposition to President Bush’s plans for war on Iraq. Spotted among the protestors were Bono and Christy Moore, who “mixed with happy go lucky marchers,” according to The People. Gardi report no serious incidences resulted from the protest.

Ah, the irony: people publically protesting their governments so that the Iraqis will never have a chance to publically protest theirs.

We are not the policemen of the world. But we are the hypocrites of the world.

Way to go Bono, glad to see we agree on this.

Marching? Comical and sad. To all marchers of the world… sitting on the street making peace signs with candles and writing unwity slogans on a peace of cardboard is quite simple, so lets see what you’ve really got. All you do is walk down the street blowing a kazoo, clapping your hands and making a lot of useless noise. Protests are nothing more than a gathering for liberals that want to relive/live the sixties. I’m sure Bono is also oversimplifying this as well by saying “it’s all about oil” and “revenge for his dad.” I’m sick of NeverNever Land fairytale types bellowing “give peace a chance” over and over without explaning just how peace will bring about a solution. Bono dissapoints me once again.

Hey Bye Bye USA… I just love it when someone throws a statement out and then lists so many reasons to back up what he said. Pfft.

You are right. Marching gets us no where. Let’s kill a bunch of innocent people to get things done.

To: Nameless. If a protest today is just a throwback to the 60s, what was a protest in the 60s? A throwback to the Revolutionary War?

It’s true that sometimes war is the lesser of two evils. Millions more Jews would have died during WWII if the Allies hadn’t finally gotten their act together and licked the Axis powers. In the case of Iraq, however, I’m not convinced Bush and Blair have a strong enough case against Hussein, heinous as he may be. I just hope this ends peaceably.

The protests are NOT justifying Saddams regime in Iraq. Anyone who thinks that is just plain dumb. This is a matter of HOW we are going to change the world and make it better – some of us just don’t feel killing thousands of innocents ever can be justified.

You know what the USA should do? The USA should STOP FUNDING all people who NEED whatever it is they NEED. We should deny all requests for aide, be it Humanitarian or Economic, because, you know we are only out for OUR interests anyway. So NO MORE US AIDE. Then, we should close our borders and NOT allow anyone ELSE to enter into the US. I think the REST OF THE WORLD should just get along without US, and WE can get along without them. We don’t REALLY NEED ANYONE ELSE. We have plenty of resources and plenty of brains here on our own shores. That way NO ONE can accuse us and NO ONE can tell us we aren’t doing the RIGHT Thing. Whatever that RIGHT thing may be in who ever’s mind.

Ghandi totally relinquished a repressed people through non-vioent, peaceful means. Never once did he give in to anger, violence. And you what? It worked. India became free of unfair, racist oppression. Look it up if you need further proof.
That’s how peace works.

Bush is an idiot. He can’t just ignore the UN and do what he wants to do without showing convincing proofs against Saddam Hussein. He forgets the need for justifying his actions.

I just read an article on atu2.com that said Bono hasn’t said anything about the war, and that he wasn’t there. Which makes sense, because he’s on good terms with Bush.

euh…mister “A Rush Of Blood To The Head” I think you really need a good rush of blood to the head, baby…Ever heard of the braindrain phenomenon? You say that the US have enough brains…well, think again, for almost 50 years the US have been using european brains, you want examples?…most stock brokers are europeans, movie business (european jews), NASA (one of the big chiefs there is Belgian),…the Bomb (invented by a german, who was kidnapped out of Nazi Germany by the secret service),…if it wasn’t for europeans, the USA would still be a wasteland filled with scum and low-lifes…

Yes, I’ll tell that to my Jewish grandparents who would have been killed by Hitler had the allie powers not gone to war with Germany. Your view is overly simplistic so give me a break.

Holy Joe — The “scum and low-lifes,” who would they be? Native Americans? Gee, too bad we took with us our European racism. Oh, and “hero,” Bush won Florida, the recounts proved that.

To everyone that says “give peace a chance” tell me how peace will bring about a solutiion. Please stop shouting your silly slogan and expand on it a little. Hussein doesn’t respect or honor peace. He never has. Now to all those that love to pretend that the USA (though definitely flawed) is the real terrorist and hypocritical… if a war did not occur I can see you as the same people that will cry 10 years from now “why didn’t the US/we stop Saddam when they/we had the chance?” You love to bitch about the way the United States handles situations, yet I never see any other countries coming up with their own solutions.

There are times when military intervention proves to be necessary and ultimately beneficial (WWII) Many times war is used just to get someone else’s resources or land. In this case, where is the proof that Hussein is an imminent threat to world at large? Certainly he’s an evil bastard but let’s try not killing the people we’re trying to help (remember Vietnam) Also, the selective grandstanding on human rights and the need to rid the world of dictorships is noteworthy. The US is best buddies with China, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, all repressive regimes and didn’t give a rat’s ass about the Iraqi people’s well being until last year. The only ones to suffer under economic sanctions were the common people, not Hussein.
On a side note, please don’t lump all Americans together. The majority of voters voted for the the other guys and the vast majority of Americans did not vote for Bush at all.
PS, thousands of Black Floridians were disenfranchised.

India? Man, that example really shows how little you know of culture. Go talk to an Native living in India and then come talk to me about all the good Ghandi has done long term. Was Ghandi a great man? Yes. No doubt. Did he promote Long lasting change WITHIN his people? No way. Talk to me about the uprising in the Kashmir, or talk to me about the burning of Indian Brides…
Oh and by the way, i guess you guys don’t know so much about the Electoral College and Presidential voting procedures do you? Go read some Political History. See how Mr. Bush really got into office.
I don’t mean to be rude, but some of the views expressed on this board are bordering on the ridiculous and uninformed.

A Rush of Blood… there’s no part in starting a debate over the Ghandi issue. Did he solve all the problems of India? No. But there were /still are many problems afflicting its people. The fact that he did liberate his people from exterior oppression, AND fend off a potential war, was a major step in the right direction for the peoples of Inida. That says something for his efforts. Ghandi deserves more recognition than he’s gotten, that’s the consensus of the academic community, and the admission of such notables as the Noble Peace Prize committee.
We cannot ignore that in this particular case, peace worked. Accept it.
You’re opinion may differ, but that is what you’re entitled to of course.

We really ought to distinguish experiences. I can’t believe, for example, that Ghandi’s methods would have worked against Hitler. Even German pacifists of the time, notably the White Rose society, recognized the need for outside intervention. The White Rose, a group of young Germans, even encouraged sabotage as a moral imperative. In other instances, violent means have not worked, notably the Palestinian situation in the West Bank and Gaza. In this case, the Palestinians would have won over both the Western World and even Israel, if they would had pursued peaceful means. By aligning themselves with other Arab powers, who did not have the Palestinians’ welfare in mind, they sank themselves into a political quagmire. With Iraq, the situation is yet again distinct. Peace in this case is nothing more than appeasement. The sad truth is that the innocent people of Iraq want the Western World to remove Hussein. If you want to prevent the death of innocent Iraqis, remove Hussein. If, however, you are France or Germany, and you want cheap oil, buddy up to the guy.

I don’t understand how can anyone make paralels between WWII and the situation in Iraq. And defend US policy as the only one that is right?!? If we have institution like UN than we should ALL respect the decisions made by it. Don’t go on saying that you should free the Iraq people – why didn’t you do it 10 yrs ago if that was your goal? Why don’t you free China, Iran, Kuba, Half of Africa and South America form dictators? I have a lot of experience of the world’s politics in my country. We wrer sloughtered for 5 yrs, and all the time you supported Slobodan Mislosevic – and now he is in war tribunal in Hague. Why did you do it? Because you had no interest or oil in our region so you didn’t have reasons to spend your money to aid us… Luckily we fought for our freedom and we won it…
I’m rambling, sory. I don’t generalise all americans, but only those that gave those stupid coments about freedom and neccessity of war

I don’t believe this story. Did you see some of the other stories at that site: “The People”? What a joke of a tabloid. There are people trying to draft Bono into the anti-war camp, but I think he is smarter than that, and sees the bigger picture. Either that, or Bush bought him off with the $15B for AIDS relief (and we all know Bono can’t be bought, right?) For all the nay-sayers, I have to ask, “What would you have us (the world) do about Iraq violating 17-18 UN resolutions in a row?” Do you honestly think if we give them one more chance that it will make a difference? At what point do you begin to enforce the UN resolutions?

Marko, if I recall correctly, the U.S. had expected Europe to take charge of that problem. When Clinton, whom I did not regularly support, pushed for a solution there, he was criticized for not having a plan. Meanwhile, the U.N. was present in that region of the world, though, admittedly, ineffectual. The U.S. has brokered peace in Eastern Europe. However, Iraq is a direct threat to the U.S. and her allies, particuarly Israel; therefore, we are directly involved. As regards Bono, he is a man of peace: humanitarian peace. That is the sort of peace we need in the many places you mention.

All that the protests proved is that the USA is the most hated nation in the world (even the most hated in the USA), but when Jacques chIRAQ and the rest of Europe needs a helping hand they better not expect the USA’s help. So when your love affair with Saddam and Arafat ends, we’ll look forward to visiting.

Mark Adams,
well you are correct on some accounts. The fact is that the war in my country started in 1990, and than Bush was all for united Yugoslavia att all cost – and cost at that time were our lives – unfortunately. The situation for us changed with Clinton becoming president, but by that time we got stronger than the serbs, so it was too little too late…
and when it comes to iraq – I think that there are a lot of bad things going on, BUT it’s so two-faced talking about disarming and about weapons of mass distructions – in that case why doesn’t the world attack Israle? For god’s sake they have the a-bomb! What I’m trying to say is that this is all politics and a big power game at a high cost – human lives. Ther’s better way than war.
Anyway, thanx for your civil responce, I realy apritiate it…
