Bono’s name is among 150 people nominated for the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize. He shares the honour with Jacques Chirac, Vaclav Havel, the European Union, peace group Women in Black, Chinese dissident Wei Jingsheng, Cuba’s leading dissident Oswaldo Paya and human rights group Global Witness.

What else did yo expect. I told someone this very thing, just recently. She laughed, and said yea, they going to nominate a rock star.
How sweet it is…

It would be interesting to know *who* nominated Bono.

What are the criteria for nomination?
I wonder outloud because peace is fleeting, generally (outside of peace given from God).
Can I nominiate myself for keeping the peace in my own house? 😛

Why did I have the impression that the list of nominees wasn’t announced until after the award is given? Am I crazy?

Larry Mullen nominated him. The awards ceremony assures at least another day of peace and quiet in Dublin.

Before we all cheer for Bono, it is worth noting that being nominated isn’t that big of an honor. After all, the most corrupt Govenor in the history of Illinois was nominated. Can he accept his prize from prison, where he shortly will be headed?

That picture made it to the Drudge Report website, too: http://www.drudgereport.com/
He deserves the Nobel more than many of the past winners. Maybe Jesse Helms nominated him 😉

Well, I guess we can file that one under “fact is stranger than fiction”.

Now I remember. There’s a scene in “A Beautiful Mind” where a member of the Nobel Prize committe comes to see Nash about nominating him – an unusual circumstance because nominees are usually notified afterwords, but they want to see if Nash will crack up. Anyway that’s 40 years ago (and Hollywood). So I guess they don’t do it like that now.

I think he’s nominated because he was not only successful in raising awarness about Third World Debt and AIDS and famine in Africa, but he was also successful in convincing the people who make the decisions to actually provide money to help solve the problem.

BONO is the greatest singer in the greatest band but he is a political IDIOT!
The guy thinks throwing money at problems will solve everything. Why doesn’t he throw some of his millions at the problem rather than telling everyone else to? Nominating him is as bad as giving the prize to Carter for his middle east peace talks that have proven to be a total failure. His heart is in the right place but he needs a better plan. They should give it to someone who can show results.

I’m sure Bono would be interested in a better plan, why don’t your offer up some ideas for a better plan, KK? And if Carter was a poor choice last year, maybe they should have given it to Arafat again, right! The Nobel awards aren’t perfect, neither is Bono and neither is the effort to help the people of Africa. But at least they are all things that are filled with hope for a better world, and that’s nothing to sneeze at!

If you want the award to be a popularity contest then by all means give it to Bono.
It is the people who are not famous and do
real work that deserve recognition.
Also your reply to give it to Arafat shows how stupid you are. Where in my comment did I say give it to a terrorist or anyone similiar? Just because
I don’t kiss Bono’s ass like you does not mean I am wrong.

I’m not asking anyone to kiss Bono’s ass (though I’m sure he would have plenty of takers;-). Bono is not a political idiot, he is a political genius, because he can convince people who disagree with him to change their minds (not just call them stupid like some people do). I agree that real work deserves recognition (wether they’re famous or not), and that is what Bono has done, real work to help solve one of the world’s biggest problems. I can’t say this enough: “He changed Jesse Helms’ mind!”
Arafat DID win the award before, and that is the only reason I brought it up. Now, about YOUR plan for Africa? I thought so.

congratulations to Bono. His efforts to peace and human rights called more attention than the Pope, and the rest of this other politicians (that are doing not more than their obligations).

Again, Watts, you are right on. In addition, one should note that during the Heart of America tour, Bono consistently stated that the idea was not for people to give money but to build awareness and public pressure. But the bottom line is SOME money will be needed. Anti-HIV drugs are not going to appear in Africa free and clean water projects cost money too (just a few examples). As far as the Peace Prize goes, in my mind, Bono’s qualifications go way back -starting with writing songs like “Pride” and “Sunday Bloody Sunday”. They continue with LiveAid, he and Ali actually going to Africa to work and the band’s refusal to participate in the partisan struggle around the issue of Northern Ireland. His Jubilee and DATA activities are only a continuation of a lifelong committment to peace. AND he DIDN”T HAVE TO DO IT!!! He could just have been a wildly successful rock star in a world class band which would be enough for many people. I don’t know if he will get it this year but I think it will happen. BTW, nominations are accepted from academic institutions and other organizations as well as from members of the Nobel Committees. My guess would be that Bono’s nomination was generated by a certain economist at Harvard.

It appears everything Bono is championing has been proven wrong. He claims Africa needs money for education on AIDS and birth control. It turns out he is dead wrong. AIDS isn’t spread by sex in Africa and it is the educated most likely to get it. Monday the first Phase III human trial vaccine results are released, so this may all be moot. http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_752279.html

wow. bono is a truly gifted singer, and an excellent songwriter. it’s an honor to be nominated, but i guess i don’t quite know *why* he was nominated. most nobel nominees have done something other than “raising awareness.” don’t get me wrong; spreading a message is a necessary thing. but at some point, someone has to ACT on the message, and that’s what the nobel peace prize should be about. the beastie boys have raised awareness. rage against the machine has raised awareness. but what have any of them (including bono) actually DONE?

OK, KK, you need to reconsider your facts. I’m not saying Bono is a political genius either, but he doesn’t just throw money at his problems. He’s actually putting a conscious effort into helping AIDS patients in Africa (need I mention DATA?) so stop dissing him. I say, congrats to him for caring at all. And more for getting nominated.

The fact is, the idea that Bono was getting out there was not at all about “throwing money” at the AIDS problem in Africa. If it was about that, no US (or other) politician would have looked twice at it. It was about the exact opposite: stop making impoverished third world counries throw money at us that they could better use internally. Bono campaigned for rich governments to drop the debt. Of course, Bush took this idea and basically screwed it up by promising more aid to Africa (well intentioned and welcome, but kind of misses the point). And by the way, all of Bono’s money and more would not relieve this problem…he realizes that it takes action and awareness (not assets) to change the world. So, whether he receives this honor or not (I’m not sure he should), congratulations to Bono for being a conscientious human being…and doing something about it. We should all thank our lucky stars that people like him and the other nominees (famous or not) are around to make the world a better place.

Bono, truely one of the only celebrities with a levelhead. He is one, who would not get lost in his fame, but who will forhold his power to set out for a better world

I think bono does deserve the prize, why should he be discriminated against because he is famous, some one who uses there fame to benifit others should be rewarded as this may encourage other people with influence and stature to really become involved instead of just clambering on to an all ready rolling band wagon!!! Bono is a modern day hero who not only uses his fame, but more importantly his keen intellect and undying dedication to benifit other, “walk on…..”.
