I suppose Rice’s an acquired taste. He sounds a bit like Paul Tiernan. Only I liked Paul Tiernan.

i got so bored i stopped it after ‘i have run…’

He picks up the pace after the first chorus, and actually samples a couple other songs towards the end. It’s not as good as I think he could have done it, but it’s not horrible.

I can’t listen to this, I’m still getting over the Bonnie Tyler version..BBC radio 2 played it on Saturday but had to stop after one verse cos it’s so piss poor.

Did anyone ever notice that U2 songs aren’t covered that much and when they are, they’re crap. It reminds me of something Bob Dylan said to Bono once, something along the lines of ‘Some of your songs are also gonna last forever, but no one’s gonna be able to play them.’ The only covers I have heard and really liked were Smashing Pumpkins doing ‘Stay’ and Johnny Cash doing ‘One’. Three chords and the truth are not the only requirements for playing U2 stuff.

Wow, I’m surprised to see all the negative comments. Personally I love this version, starts out slow and builds.

There’s a live cover version of “Sunday Bloody Sunday” going around over at Kazaa that I think is wonderful, but I have seen numerous artists credited. Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam (I know it’s not them!), and Radiohead, to name a few. Does anyone know who it really is?

Ugh, that was me just asking about “Sunday Bloody Sunday”. Somehow, my name got left off!

that’s just an audience recording of an improvised moment. damien is by far and away the most exciting act to come of ireland for years. i suggest you check out the other recordings or go see him live. he really is amazing!

To answer Audra, I believe that the live version of Sunday Bloody Sunday that is floating around, credited to various artists such as Sublime, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Radiohead and others, is actually The Edge performing the song during the Pop Mart show in Sarajevo.

Wow, this is awesome. Reminds me a bit of Ryan Adams’ mellower tunes. I can’t believe I haven’t heard of this guy. Thanks for sharing this with us Vonb. I dig it.

Kakvox, you make some interesting points. My opinion of covering U2 is, if you’re gonna do it, don’t try to do it and sound like U2. Because no one can bleedin’ sound like U2 accept U2. It’s only worth doing if you’re gonna do it differently than the original recording, if you want to take the song to a place it’s never been before.

Peter is exactly right about that version of Sunday Bloody Sunday, it is indeed the Edge at Sarajevo Popmart.
I hate it when idiots on filesharing programs mislabel songs.

I haven’t heard the Damien Rice cover of ISHFWILF, but I really encourage people to investigate this guy. He’s released one album “O” which is incredible. An “angry country singer” he is not.

Regarding U2 covers – have you lot heard The Chimes version of I Still haven’t Found… it’s very soulfull and VERY good!Bono was actually quoted as saying “At last someone who sings it the way it’s meant to be sung” – I totally disagree with Bono about this, but she sure does sing it with soul, baby!

Yeah I quite liked the Chimes’ version too. Have heard people slagging it off but I thought it was quite nice.

You know who else did a good cover of “Still Haven’t” live? Vertical Horizon. They did a sort of medley of that song, then one of their songs, called “Falling Down,” then the Irish traditional, “Danny Boy.” It’s really awesome — I highly recommend it.

All you people scathing about Damien Rice’s version of ISHFWILF have no class at all. That song is a classic, no mistake, but it’s refreshing to hear it done without all the U2 bombast and with a little humility. Oh yeah, My Morning Jacket are the best band on the planet.
