Bono and Edge Film Today Show Appearance

This morning around 11 a.m., Bono and Edge arrived at NBC Studios with Paul McGuinness and Dallas Schoo to film an appearance on the TODAY show. After a brief interview with both Matt Lauer and Katie Couric, Bono and Edge performed “The Hands That Built America” several times. After the filming was completed, Bono and Edge posed for photos with NBC staff before they left around 12:45 p.m.

Speaking to fans outside NBC Studios, Dallas said that the band have been working hard on the new album, which has a working title. “But the title escapes me at the moment,” Dallas teased.

Bono and Edge’s performance and interview will air on the TODAY show on February 26.

  1. Why would the guy even mention the tentative title if he isn’t gonna tell anyone? Yeah, hahahahahahahahaha! Really funny! You know and we don’t! Hahahahahaha! What a joker! Buahahahahahaha! Dork.

  3. Dallas isn’t a dork, and no one in the U2 organization would be smartass with the fans, I think he was being tongue in cheek — whatever they call it among themselves must change with the wind, and I doubt they have a definitive title for something they’ve yet to create! But I do understand that it is a guitar album!!

They’re reporting that Bono slipped a disc in his back, I’m surprised he’s in New York, and hope he’s OK and not pushing himself — if this report is true, the flight alone must have been a real joy — those seats, even in first class, can GIVE someone back problems, never mind aggravate one. I just hope he brought Dr. Larry with him, too.

  5. Hmm doesn’t Bono have a piece of one of those fractional private jets now? If that’s the case he could probably have a king size orthopedic bed put in for him and get some good rest crossing the Atlantic… 🙂

  7. I would like to add that it’s not clear if Bono and Edge performed two songs or only “The Hands That Built America” several times for editing purposes. The set was closed, so one could only watch what was being filmed and not hear anything. Edge only used an acoustic guitar. If a second song was performed, it was probably “American Prayer.”

  9. If he does have a slipped disc there must be something in the water in Dublin. Both Larry and Gavin have had one and have undergone spinal surgery for it.

  11. About Bono’s slipped disc…I don’t know if it’s true or not that he hurt himself, but he appeared fine at the TODAY show taping. He got up from the interview sofa and walked to the microphone without assistance. He did not seem to be in pain. His eyes were not glazed from pain medication, and he wasn’t bent over.

  19. This is from ShowBizIreland, this is where I read about the slipped disc:

“Bad news for U2 fans – as we reported yesterday Bono missed the Premiere of Frida due to a bad back, it was confirmed last night at another film Premiere that Bono had in fact slipped a disc.

Neil Jordan had the film Premiere for his latest movie The Good Thief last night in the UGC in Dublin and it was yet another celebrity filled event.

The title track of the film, The Good Life by Frank Sinatra, was sung by Bono and he was due to turn up at the Premiere. When we inquired once again where the talented singer was news soon came our way that he had slipped a disc in his back and could not attend.”

Now, Edge was at the Frida premiere, and Ali was at this one, so I don’t know why they couldn’t have asked either one of them to find out how Bono is or what really happened….

Lea, thanks for that photo link, yowza, almost makes up for the fact that I got up at 7 am today FOR NOTHING!!

vonb, I had heard rumors that Larry had finally had surgery, but didn’t know for sure — is that why he was late coming to the sessions for ATYCLB? That was what I surmised at the time, because no one in anything I read said why he didn’t show up until Feb. And I had also read that Gavin had had some kind of terrible time, being hospitalized for like three months or something, and I never found out exactly what that was all about either, it was for his back? This is scary, because the water in Dublin is better than it is here!

  21. Thank You Lea!!! He looks fine. Hey BONO we got your back.. Just take care, do what you need to for yourself. I understand the 40’s.

    S*** happens….

  23. didn’t Bono also sing a traditional Irish song for the movie? I remember there being a news item here about it fairly recently. Maybe that’s the second song.

Gavin’s had back problems for a few years. It all came to a head early last year and one morning he couldn’t walk anymore. He had emergency surgery and was in hospital for a week or so, then flat on his back for weeks at home. It takes 9 months to heal, with lots of physiotherapy, etc. He’s a lot better now. Larry had the same thing just before they went into the studio to record Pop. It’s also the reason he looks so fit all the time as you have to get your back muscles in shape to carry the weight that your spine no longer can.

  27. I’d also like to mention that Lawrence maybe a grumpy sod but he was extremely helpful to Gav when Gav was going in for surgery. So fair play to him for that. He may not be cool to the fans all the time, but he won’t let a mate down.

  29. My God, was that Pop, not ATYCLB? It’s all beginning to blur! Thank you, vonb. And there really are fans who think Larry is grumpy as a rule, or would be surprised to hear that he was right there for Gavin? Amazing. One of the things I’ve always loved about Larry is his absolute intolerance for nonsense — maybe people who don’t like his responses should consider what kind of behavior elicited a grumpy reaction from him, rather than the fact that they GOT a grumpy reaction! Thanks again…

  31. I think that alot of fans fail to realize that when you’re in a band as big as U2, there’s a whole lot of stuff that can make you grumpy about something. I honestly don’t think Larry reacts any differently than most fans would if they were in his position of being in a band that is so wildly popular as U2. I would go as far as saying that he probably acts bbetter than most fans would. It’s easy to make comments from the outside looking in, but think about it for a second. Do you all know the full circumstances and under which context he performs his actions? A stalker killed John Lennon, can you blame Larry for not exactly agreeing with fan fanatics?

  33. Anyone think that Bono will perform the traditional song that was on the GONY soundtrack? What’s the title/track number of that song anyway?

  37. I don’t think Bono’s back was as bad as the press made out. He just didn’t want to go to those premieres and have the showbizireland folks get pics and spoil the surprise of his new beard. I know someone who saw him at the Clarence the night of the Frida premiere.
