Punk Rock made on Venus

Talking about the new album to VH1, Bono’s quoted saying:

“It’s full-on, a full-throttle record. It’s like punk rock made on Venus. It is a mad sound The Edge is making. People are saying, ‘Bono, people are sick of you. You’ve been around, you’ve been winning all these awards. You have to go away for a while.’ This record is so good that it won’t even matter that people are sick of U2. And by the way, I’m sick of Bono

  1. I wish I would have kept all the quotes Bono said about ATYCLB and compare them to all the quotes about the new album, currently titled “We Are Never Making Another Achtung Baby Again”. I can pretty much guarantee that they will be STRIKINGLY SIMILAR. But then again, if The Edge really is taking over control of the studio, then it might be fun. Fingers crossed. Again.

  3. Titanium soul, anyone remember that quote? Bono has described every album this way. He’s never going to say it has 4 or 5 really great songs, 3 or 4 that aren’t radio friendly but still real good, and 2 or 3 that are there just to fill the space. It will always be punk rock on Venus coming from Bono.

  5. there really isn’t anything in the world i love more than a good quote from Bono about an upcoming album. Except quotes from Bono about an album that just came out. Or maybe those Rock Hall inductions speeches. Or acceptance speeches. No, no, I’m going with unreleased album in progress quotes. No question. Keep ’em coming!

  7. bono was never quoted (i dont think) saying AYCLB was punk rock. he did say all songs were radio friendly and the fact is they were. i believe this is going to be a more of a raw record. also, keep in mind that he is trying to build up the hype so fans like us get excited about the new album.

  9. Bono did say that ATYCLB was not only soul, but titanium soul. He mentioned every song was a potential single – I guess that could be the case: Peace on Earth and Grace could’ve been singles (so could any song), but realistically you would have been foolish to realise those two songs or even WILATW, Wild Honey.
And at one stage POP was going to be a full-on guitar album. Yes, Bono likes to ramble on but I think this time I’ll only believe him once I have heard the album. All this talk of U2 doing punk-rock has me currently envisioning a CD that sounds similar to Pet Sounds.

  11. Here’s a recent quote i snagged from Billboard…
“[Director Martin Scorsese] wanted me singing,” Bono said. “I sing actually in the middle of the picture, though you’d never know. There’s a street scene, and I sing an ancient Gaelic melody — he wanted me to do it so [that] when my voice came up at the end of the film, it wasn’t strange. The Oscar nomination is a big deal for us.”

Thought that was cool, wasn’t aware to look for that, will listen carefully the next time…

  15. Fan Since ’80: The billboard article for which you provided the link seems to have an outdated reference to a U2 Grammy nomination for best rock performance. I believe this was actually for the 9/11 benefit which would have been part of 2002 awards. Agreed?

  17. I think I will stop trying to interpret what Bono says and what he means. In one article I read, “what Edge is doing in the studio is ridiculous” It shocked me untill I read further he was actually pleased he was with the sounds the Edge was coming up with. I believe I saw that report on interference. But for heavens sake, don’t misinterpret me. I’m all over the web reading stuff.

  19. Actually Julie that nomination IS for the 2003 awards…it is for the 9/11 benefit performance, but that did come out as a recording in the period for this year’s Grammys. So root for the boys tomorrow, probably will be one of the awards announced before the show.

  21. It’s hard to predict anything about the new album unless we know who’s producing it. I’ve learned over the years that if Eno & Lanois are at the helm, then it’s guaranteed to be a phenomenal U2 record. Without them, you have to hold your breath.

  23. I don’t think the idea that the new album will have a ‘raw’ feel to it is that far-fetched. I remember reading comments from Bono several months after ATYCLB release that he himself felt it was a bit over-produced (I think it was Q magazine, but I’m not sure). Anyway, the fact that no producers name has surfaced yet leads me to believe that maybe U2 will produce it themselves. Edge was a co-producer on ‘Zooropa’ and I believe Larry re-mixed the Slane castle special.

  25. They have a producer, but he’s on a trial period, so they’re not naming him yet. (I think it’s Rick Rubin!)
Check out u2news.com for more on that.

  27. lordy, i was just making a joke to myself, by thinking they said the album would be raw and rocking and all…and for a joke i was thinking about slayer (….) and their producer…rick rubin, and then i read this….woohoo! dan, are you serious about that, gotta check out! cheers!

  29. I am not totally familiar with Rick Ruben… someone here said… well the post above mine said something about Slayer. What are his other producing credits? Thanks in advance.

  31. Rick Rubin was also responsible for a lot of mid-80’s rap production, like the Beastie Boys’ Licensed To Ill and a fair bit of Run DMC stuff. He and Russell Simmons are the guys who started up Def Jam. Maybe we’ll get a cover of “Brass Monkey” or “Rock Box.”

  33. Ahhhh! I knew the name sounded familiar… he worked on Freaky Styly and Mofo thingy (weird and long title I can’t remember off hand) by the Peppers. Thanks!

  35. Rubin is just a rumor of course. A rumor fueled by the fact that he recently “casually” mentioned that he’d been talking to Bono. Seemed odd that he mentioned that around the same time that a tidbit about U2 working with a new, unnamed producer surfaced at u2news.com
Apparently they’ve never worked with this producer before, and they’ve recruited him for their “raw guitar” record. The pieces just seem to fit.
But of course, this is just a rumor.

  37. HOLY JOE CRAP!! Punk Rock made on Venus?? Others may doubt Bono’s hype on the new album, but I’m firmly in the “believing” camp. Edge is the driving force behind this new music, whatever it will be. It’ll make Radiohead wet their pants when they hear it.

  39. I don’t think that RH will wet their pants when they hear the new music… U2 and RH are so distinctively different now, that their music isn’t even comparable. I did hear that Thom’s voice is gonna be the focal point on the new RH record, and that makes me excited though. Also, didn’t U2 mention Ruben in the list of producers that was on their wishlist to work with for the new album in that Q&A session from U2.com a couple of months back?

  41. Rick Rubin just finished the new Limp Bizkit album and will start working soon with Slipknot. So it’s not him…
Maybe it’s Larry and Adam! That’s the reason why they became invisible members of U2!

  43. PopArtist: Thanks. It had me confused. I really just wanted to know if the boys would be on tonight’s grammy show. im not nearly as interested in this year’s show as last! hehe i thought if this was really current, that they might be lurking somewhere — but likely not if its one of the pre-show awards.

  45. 100%! DLove… not a huge Orbit fan, agree on the Lanois/Eno positive influence as well. Cheers to the band tryin’ the “do it yerself” technique…

  47. Have any of you ever worked with U2? They may record and mix a song one way one week, and next week? They make it something completely different. They’re mad, all four of ’em, and their producers only encourage ’em!!

Whatever the final cuts sound like, it’s gonna be feckin’ awesome, believe me. Hearing the sounds coming out of Edge’s guitar … all four are clickin’, it’s not just Edge on fire, all four of ’em are lifting each other to new heights … mygod, now I’m sounding like Bono ….

My final word — don’t judge the music until you hear it!

  51. ‘sick of U2’? this does not compute…I *heart* Edge. I can’t wait to see what the boys are coming up with, and I don’t care about trying to figure out what it will sound like because I know it will be incredible!! But ‘punk rock on Venus’? It’s gonna kick ass, plain and simple.

  55. I know this is random, but…I’d kind of like to have an album just called “U2” one of these days. I kind of feel like it’s a good time to do something like that. They said that now, with ATYCLB, they kind of feel they’ve really figured out who they are as a band. Just a thought.

  57. A few notes… I guess I can’t get excited about “punk rock made on Venus” because that really doesn’t mean anything. I don’t like any of the Rick Ruben produced acts but I certainly DO NOT want Eno/Lanois in the studio. I am sick to death of what those guys do. If they’re really doing a heavy guitar record, why not get that dude they kicked out of the Pop sessions? The Massive Attack and HMTMKMKM producer.

  59. Another thing — The Edge IS a musical genius, IMO, and there are a lot of people who have apparently seen him do some really amazing things during live shows, and suspect that he actually has not yet reached his full potential. What I’d love to hear on an album one of these days is Edge just completely letting lose. So far, it sounds like this very well may be the case. But they’ve a long way to go yet. Moreover, he’s reportedly spending lots of long hours and late nights in the studio, as he did on AB and Zooropa — that’s a good sign, I think…

  61. I can’t wait for the new album and I could never be sick of Bono, even if he gets sick of himself. I do however, like when Edge gets into the music a bit more, he brings something different to the table. I am sure it will be a great album no matter what.

  63. Deniece, while I agree with you I have to say that Edge can’t get into the music a bit more…he’s already into it. He’s responsible for and writes nearly all the musical idea’s…I can see him being a control freak. Dot…He has reached his full potential…we have yet to hear every side of guitar playing genious that Edge has to offer, has discovered, AND is going to develop, invent, and innovate in the studio. 🙂

  65. U2 has always been good at “doing their own thing.” The sounds on “The Unforgettable Fire,” “The Joshua Tree,” “Achtung Baby,” and “ATYCLB.” are very original. A punk rock record would be great for U2 to do. It’s time The Edge showed that he is one of the greatest guitar payers ever (not THE greatest ever, but a great). I’d like to see Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno produce it, because they’ve had the best success with those producers.
