Talking about the new album to VH1, Bono’s quoted saying:

“It’s full-on, a full-throttle record. It’s like punk rock made on Venus. It is a mad sound The Edge is making. People are saying, ‘Bono, people are sick of you. You’ve been around, you’ve been winning all these awards. You have to go away for a while.’ This record is so good that it won’t even matter that people are sick of U2. And by the way, I’m sick of Bono

  1. I wish I would have kept all the quotes Bono said about ATYCLB and compare them to all the quotes about the new album, currently titled “We Are Never Making Another Achtung Baby Again”. I can pretty much guarantee that they will be STRIKINGLY SIMILAR. But then again, if The Edge really is taking over control of the studio, then it might be fun. Fingers crossed. Again.

  9. Titanium soul, anyone remember that quote? Bono has described every album this way. He’s never going to say it has 4 or 5 really great songs, 3 or 4 that aren’t radio friendly but still real good, and 2 or 3 that are there just to fill the space. It will always be punk rock on Venus coming from Bono.

Or maybe those Rock Hall inductions speeches. Or acceptance speeches. No, no, I’m going with unreleased album in progress quotes. No question. Keep ’em coming!

  17. bono was never quoted (i dont think) saying AYCLB was punk rock. he did say all songs were radio friendly and the fact is they were. i believe this is going to be a more of a raw record. also, keep in mind that he is trying to build up the hype so fans like us get excited about the new album.

He mentioned every song was a potential single – I guess that could be the case: Peace on Earth and Grace could’ve been singles (so could any song), but realistically you would have been foolish to realise those two songs or even WILATW, Wild Honey.
    And at one stage POP was going to be a full-on guitar album. Yes, Bono likes to ramble on but I think this time I’ll only believe him once I have heard the album. All this talk of U2 doing punk-rock has me currently envisioning a CD that sounds similar to Pet Sounds.

  27. Fan Since ’80: The billboard article for which you provided the link seems to have an outdated reference to a U2 Grammy nomination for best rock performance. I believe this was actually for the 9/11 benefit which would have been part of 2002 awards. Agreed?

In one article I read, “what Edge is doing in the studio is ridiculous” It shocked me untill I read further he was actually pleased he was with the sounds the Edge was coming up with. I believe I saw that report on interference. But for heavens sake, don’t misinterpret me. I’m all over the web reading stuff.

  31. Actually Julie that nomination IS for the 2003 awards…it is for the 9/11 benefit performance, but that did come out as a recording in the period for this year’s Grammys. So root for the boys tomorrow, probably will be one of the awards announced before the show.

  33. It’s hard to predict anything about the new album unless we know who’s producing it. I’ve learned over the years that if Eno & Lanois are at the helm, then it’s guaranteed to be a phenomenal U2 record. Without them, you have to hold your breath.

  35. I don’t think the idea that the new album will have a ‘raw’ feel to it is that far-fetched. I remember reading comments from Bono several months after ATYCLB release that he himself felt it was a bit over-produced (I think it was Q magazine, but I’m not sure). Anyway, the fact that no producers name has surfaced yet leads me to believe that maybe U2 will produce it themselves. Edge was a co-producer on ‘Zooropa’ and I believe Larry re-mixed the Slane castle special.

  37. They have a producer, but he’s on a trial period, so they’re not naming him yet. (I think it’s Rick Rubin!)

  51. Rick Rubin was also responsible for a lot of mid-80’s rap production, like the Beastie Boys’ Licensed To Ill and a fair bit of Run DMC stuff. He and Russell Simmons are the guys who started up Def Jam. Maybe we’ll get a cover of “Brass Monkey” or “Rock Box.”

  61. I don’t think that RH will wet their pants when they hear the new music… U2 and RH are so distinctively different now, that their music isn’t even comparable. I did hear that Thom’s voice is gonna be the focal point on the new RH record, and that makes me excited though. I don’t like any of the Rick Ruben produced acts but I certainly DO NOT want Eno/Lanois in the studio. I am sick to death of what those guys do. If they’re really doing a heavy guitar record, why not get that dude they kicked out of the Pop sessions? The Massive Attack and HMTMKMKM producer.

He’s responsible for and writes nearly all the musical idea’s…I can see him being a control freak. Dot…He has reached his full potential…we have yet to hear every side of guitar playing genious that Edge has to offer, has discovered, AND is going to develop, invent, and innovate in the studio. 🙂

  99. U2 has always been good at “doing their own thing.” The sounds on “The Unforgettable Fire,” “The Joshua Tree,” “Achtung Baby,” and “ATYCLB.” are very original. A punk rock record would be great for U2 to do. It’s time The Edge showed that he is one of the greatest guitar payers ever (not THE greatest ever, but a great). I’d like to see Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno produce it, because they’ve had the best success with those producers.
