‘Sir Bono’ Says Blair Is Wrong on Iraq

legionhonor.jpg

After receiving the Legion of Honor medal from French President Jacque Chirac, Bono addressed journalists outside the Elysee Palace in Paris. When asked for his opinion on British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s position on Iraq, Bono replied, “Tony Blair is to me a great politician. He is sincere in his convictions about Iraq, but in my opinion he is sincerely wrong.”

Asked if he approved of Chirac’s policy of urging more time for UN weapons inspectors in Iraq, Bono said, “How can you not be for peace?” (Source: Agence France Presse)

  1. We bailed their butts out twice in the last century, not to mention 50 years of keeping the Soviets out of W. Europe and thiss is the thanks we get? Actung Frenchy! You’d be speaking German and then Russian if it were not for the U.S.

Now, they start blowing up our cities and when we try to go in through the UN to defend ourselves, you object?

We just never will see eye to eye. Mr. Bono was a great singer and entertainer but knows beans about how you use strength to win peace.

$15 billion dollars for AIDS in Africa and a month later he’s doggin’ G.W.?

There’s NOTHING we could do to win favor with some folks. Nothing.

  3. You didn’t need to adres you are an American Andrew, it was more then abvious in your message! Please don’t give us your ‘If it weren’t for us’ crap ok! I’m Dutch and even though Holland supports the USA I’m am totally against what you are planning! You are so blind if you think this Iraq war is about ‘(world)peace’! Bush is after the oil and it’s a pure and simpel money question! And if IF there was any hard evidence or proof that Saddam had these weapons I can understand you but there isn’t! And that’s simply why France and the others are against it!

  11. Bono’s comments indicate that he’s for peace, and nothing more. He has not commented on what he believes the impending war is *really* about nor has he elaborated on how certain politicans are “wrong.” IMO, his comments have been very general.

  13. If you want to check history books it is plain to see that more often than not the lasting effects of war IS peace. This may seem like an oxymoron but it is true. I don’t want anyone to have to fight a war, but history has shown that over extended periods of high tensions without resolving the conflict in one way or another leads to bloodier and more violent confrontations. Jacques Chirac needs to recognize lessons that his own country has failed to accept or hundreds of years. I guarantee that the immediate effects of war are good for no one. But, those who cannot remeber the past are condemned to repeat it. The lasting effects of war will far exceed the immediate and more concerning ones. (By the way Jacques stance on war is mereley part of his igger ideal to weasel his way to the top of the EU for monetary purposes. Not the right guy for a rather noble position. So, we should pay little credence to what he has to say. His motives speak for themsleves)
    PS
I know I have said that we should drop the ‘war’ subject in the past, bu those who are arguing against war aren’t making very good or principled arguments. I just thought I would add what I thought since no one is dropping it. Oh yeah American Andrew, quit embarrasing the rest of your country, and Neilz don’t be a popous Euro and give credence to poorly tought out comments.

  15. Well, looks like Bono has fallen off the fence. (Maybe that’s how he hurt his back?) “How can you not be for peace?” Well, IMHO, this peace will come at the cost of the UN. If the UN refuses to put any teeth in the resoltions that have already passed, it will become irrelevant. How long do we (the UN) allow Iraq to be in violation before we do something? All sides (France, Germany, Russia, et al) tend to agree that at some point, action must be taken unless Iraq is in full compliance… Intelligent people can disagree on this issue, and I am happy Bono shows respect to Blair & Bush even though they disagree.

  17. Yes, niku2, lovely beard, he looks gorgeous. So does Ali by the way, what a smile. Chirac looks as he always does: like a dork. Well colour me happy, I managed to keep my political convictions out of this post! Hurrah!

  19. I think Bono deserves this medal, although the timing of it seems a bit strange to me, now that all this Iraq thing is going on. And Aaron: (Robert Fisk says)

  21. i agree w/ bono, war is not a good idea (i’m american). and i think any war w/ iraq is because of oil not because of any weapons of mass destruction. if the weapons were the issue, we’d be focusing on north korea (who we know has these weapons).

  23. To use a quote the learned Plot above, it would appear that Bush and his cronies DO have a “hard on to kill” (and an equally unhealty desire for oil). What’s wrong with upping the number of UN inspectors and leaving them their indefinitely?
Anyway, why knock a man for saying

  25. Why should WE force a leader out of power in a country that has not expressed aggression towards us in 11 years? Why should WE force a leader out of power because his country may have weapons of mass desctruction? Why should WE stress so much about a country that MAY have weapons of mass destruction when there is another country that DOES have weapons of mass destruction (NORTH KOREA)?

  27. Sounds like we’re all for peace but just don’t agree on the way to achieve it.
As for the issue at hand?..Bono’s beard?..too funny (or sad)!

  29. it has taken me (american) a while to determine which side of the fence i am on on this topic of war. This issue has nothing to do with the french, with germany, or iraq. We are all human beings about to conscientiously inflict war upon a nation. We are going to fight, but don’t know exactly what for. I certainly have a lot of respect for President Chirac, for he is staying true to his convictions and standing up to president bush, which is more than I can say about the democrats. Every day that goes by, I become more and more anti-war, and I think that is a VERY good thing.

  31. He Rev Jeff: If you believe “it’s all about oil” then you’ve accepted a classic liberal strategy to sidetrack people from focusing on the real issue of what Madass (Sadaam backward) could and most likely will do with his WMD.
Hussein doesn’t care about his people. I’ve Iraqi friends who can testify to it.
