Blame Bono

Poor B. Smack in the middle of contradiction, that’s where he said he wanted to be. Be careful what you wish for… In Ireland, lecturer Harry Browne quips Bono’s a curse on the anti-war cause:

“Let’s look at the record: less than three weeks ago, well over 100,000 people turned out on the streets of Dublin to oppose the war. Since then, Bono has revealed that He is On Our Side, and the movement here has descended into argument and sniping about the admissibility or otherwise of ‘direct action’ tactics, divisions gleefully exploited by the media. This belated confirmation of Brendan Behan’s too-oft-quoted maxim about how an Irish agenda begins with the split led to a disappointing turnout of fewer than 2,000 protesters (in two separate groups) at Shannon ‘Warport’ on March 1.”

  1. well put, Scott. I have no idea. Does this guy think that Bono was just waiting for public opinion to show him the position he must adopt? yeaaah. That sure sounds like something Bono would do to me….

  3. no offense intended, but — the quote above requires reading more than just this site for news in which there are postings about our pop idol, bono. search and you will find several examples of the changeability of certain characters –probably this guy is pissed off and wanted to pronounce — that bono is a pop star and that we love him for his voice, not what he says with it. fact is: many will always groove to u2, but-unfortunately or fortunately there are wiser, more intelligent, though less published people in the world. and, the point that he (i believe)is trying to make is the mere difference between noble and nobel –contrived as it might seem–sometimes to be contrite is enough.

  5. So! According to Howard Owens, I am a lefty, who will agree with anything that Bono says, as I am unable to make up my own mind. And mister Browne here states that Bono will shout whatever opinion is most popular, sucking up to any celebrity or world leader who just happens to be in the spotlight with him.
In other words: I can’t form my own opinions, so I take those of Bono, who can’t form his own opinions, so he takes those of er..Jacques Chirac. Or the Easter Bunny, whoever is more popular. Well, Howie, Harry, I would give you a piece of my mind, but sadly, I have not yet heard Bono’s opinion on this matter, so I can’t. But I’m guessing…Bite me!

  7. Saddam Hussein has ordered uniforms replicating those worn by U.S. and British troops and will issue them to paramilitary fighters who would attack Iraqi civilians and blame it on Western forces, the U.S. Central Command charged on Thursday.

  9. yep… the same US central command who lied about “smart” bombs being smart in the gulf war…

  11. Wow, this is just going to be something people will disagree on forever probably, but I do want to say “AMEN!!!” to Flygirl!!!

  13. flygirl – I think you’re missing the point. Howard didn’t say ALL U2 fans were lefties (he has since also posted personally on U2log to stress this point). After reading the comments to several recent posts re ‘Iraq’, I would have to agree with him. If you were to objectively review the comments, you will find some people twisting and manipulating Bono’s reasonings to be in harmony with their own viewpoint. I think some are just getting too worked up over this. Flygirl, to be honest, I am with you (like a lot of other people)- who doesn’t give a crap what Bono’s thinks. Personally, I just like their music!

  17. I’m disappointed in the way people are reacting to Howard Owens’ piece. I added several of his articles to point out Howard’s a fan of the band. Just wanted to highlight someone who is writing from a personal perspective, on their personal site. Just a tip of the hat from one weblog, to another.

  19. I don’t doubt that Howard is a fan of the band and especially of Bono. And ofcourse he can write his own opinions on his own site. I just don’t agree with him that people protest against the war in Iraq out of hate against the USA. And that it’s easier to get people to march out of hatred that it is out of love. I am what people, especially Americans, would call a lefty. But I don’t like to be labeled because of that by anyone. I do not hate America. And I do not march out of hatred. In fact, I didn’t even march at all this time. Because I’m not so sure that military action against Iraq should in al cases be avoided. It is, as Howard pointed out, a very complex matter. And I can make up my own mind about it, lefty or righty or in the middly. That was my point.

  21. I heard about an article, in some magazine, that some guy read and told me about that the Pope smokes dope.

  23. “i heard” –“in some magazine” –“that some guy read and told me about”—what is the level of intelligence of some of these people with such staunch positions? scott cannot even interpret any of the articles. how can one who can’t fully understand something be so assured of their position? that should put it into a nutshell for scott.

  25. Okay, let’s stop this right now. Let’s not misuse this site to spit and curse at eachother. There are other sites to ‘discuss’ the war on Iraq, this is a site about U2, and if you cannot respect that, or eachother, then go. A little debate is healthy, but this is getting ugly.

  27. Hard truth is only half right. France abstained from voting on the ’91 Gulf War resolution. They certianly didn’t side with America, they just looked the other way. Though they were the first ones in to kiss Saddam’s arse after…
