Well, chalk this up under “big fat rumour that could be a load of bollocks” — but we wouldn’t want to keep it from you. From our mailbox – quoted verbatim, grammar-issues and all:

well, I guess “The Joshua Tree” didn’t sound so great at first either.
I’m willing to give this rumor a chance… cause I like it.

Funny they mention “Clocks” by Coldplay.
I reckon it’s the best R.E.M. song R.E.M. has never recorded!

“The ordinary land” is a good title for a record. And it makes all sense, looking at the situation of the world at the moment…. the world is a ordinary land..
I belive in this rumour, “the ordinary land” sounds like a typical Bono’s title…
Hope the band could find the 4 songs they need to make a mad guitar album.

I think this new record is truly inspired by Bono’s political envolvment in several issues.
11 th september is present too.

Yeah, funny they would be ‘inspired’ by “Clocks” when to me it’s ALWAYS sounded like a ripoff if U2’s “The Unforgettable Fire” only not as good!

Early Prediction: Coldplay will induct U2 into the Rock N’ Roll Hall OF Fame in 2006. I’d love to see it happen.

I’d love to see Springsteen induct them, actually. Or Michael Stipe. But as for “The Ordinary Land” – I like the sound of it. It’s pithier than ATYCLB. 🙂 And “Clocks” is a great song, even if Bono playing piano worries me a little. Ah well. It worked on “Sweetest Thing.”

I don’t believe this for a minute. No band would openly tell people that they are ripping off another bands song, and tell fans that they have completed songs already and only need 4 more! Anyway, that is not how u2 make albums, they’ve never done it that way.

RISS, U2 always say stuff like this. Especially these days. Lately it seems as though Bono is always blathering on about what they’ve been listening to, and what songs they’ve done. Check out http://www.atu2.com/newalbum for a big list of such quotes.

don’t believe bono, in atyclb session he said it was two songs away, but it took another 6-9 months to complete it. this time, maybe 1 and a half year.

alright, whatever this rumour is about, i take it for what it is….well, and U2 being influenced by coldplay?…..why not! coldplay are a bloody great band writing bloody huge songs, clocks is brilliant (especially in combination with the video). whatever time from now it may take U2 to finish writing and recording, the mixing process of a record was always kind of part of the “writing” process, too! (remember flood mixing mofo…). i

I don’t know about you guys, but the first thing I noticed was “running to a car outside”…it’s a pretty in depth conversation to have during a quick run, and we all remember that picture of Bono with his water bottle… 😉 lighten up guys, don’t take EVERYTHING AS IS…this was probably just a disgruntled Coldplay fan or something. hehe.

Funny…….last I heard they were gonna lift the title of the LP/CD from “Original of the Species” a song from the new sessions. It would make sense as “U2” are the original band. Many have tried and failed to capture the U2 sound.

This person approached Bono and struck up a conversation and then tells a friend. Please, someone who attempts to talk to Bono would have to be a fan, even a not so rabid fan, would tell the story 1st person. I don’t believe this for a second. Please keep in mind I’m not saying anyone is fabricating stories, well, yes I am….Just no offense anyone..

PLEASE stop making me sick with any “U2 is influenced by Coldplay” garbage! Coldplay is nothing but a montage copying U2, Radiohead, and The Verve. I agree with Susan that “Clocks” is a ripoff of “The Unforgettable Fire”- just listen to them back to back and you will see this. I double dog dare ya!! Except, Chris Martin’s voice sucks compared to Bono, the tune doesn’t flow nearly as well as UF, and UF’s lyrical work is superior. I am sick to death that anyone would think U2 would copy “Clocks” PLEASE! It’s a copy of U2 for God’s sake!!

Completely agree with everything U2 Princess said. Why would U2 be influenced by a band that is a watered down, derivative version of U2 themselves?

Hi U2 Princess – Thought I might just remind you that many see consider u2 to be a montage of several earlier bands ie Beatles, Ramones, RS and even Pink Floyd(though I might not necessarily agree with this).
I just wonder how many people have heard ‘a rush of blood to the head’ when making negative remarks about coldplay? Interesting to note that Coldplay won a grammy last week – U2 didn’t get one for the UF did they?

Michael,
who’s counting…not u2, their too busy finding places for all their won awards and ones surely to come. Cold Play has talent, but they need some manners. Didn’t the lead singer announce that they want to be the best band in the world and in the same breath tell the word that the lead singer in THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD has hair plugs. Who does that? He needs to come down of his high horse and eat some humble pie before I take him serious.

Coldplay are pretty damn good and have a potential to be pretty damn great… but since when the worth of an album is measured by the amount of Grammys it got?

Val, what are you talking about? How can anyone so obviously big on Bono criticize Chris Martin or any other man of needing manners or to come down off their high horse and eat some humble pie? Bono, the dude who manages to talk about how great U2 is at any time he opens his mouth. Bono, who writes songs for music legends and just assumes they’re gonna want to do them even though they never asked. Did ya ask for Two Shots Frank? Didn’t think so. Bono, the guy that curses at award shows even though most other foul mouths manage to show restraint. AND, Bono didn’t didn’t seem to have a problem having a laugh at the expense of Phil Collins balding head. Bono the well mannered saint? Bullshit. This guy is as pompous as any human being I can think of. Now for the people saying that Coldplay is watered down U2 and Clocks is a copy of U2… NO MORE THAN THE WAR ALBUM IS A COPY AND WATERED DOWN VERSION OF THE CLASH.

Rabbitt you are right. Anybody who know’s Coldplay will know that Chris Martin is if anything TOO modest and self-depreciating. I think he’s only now starting to stop apologising after every song they perform live! As for his comments about Bono, here in the UK it is quite acceptable to take the piss out of fellow rock stars! 😉 Also you can compare the calibre of Coldplay to U2 but not their music. Chris Martin has an absolutely disinctive sound IMHO.

Good for Ricko, Susan, U2 Princess, Shyam and anyone else who has the sense to see you cannot be “INFLUENCED” by a band that has ripped YOU off! See, it’s no offense to Coldplay in general (though I HAVE listened and DON’T like them much) it’s just common sense. How on earth can you take an ‘influence’ from someone who copied YOU?! It’s like saying your Mom inherited her eyes from you instead of vice versa! Get it?!
I am upset to see so many of you actually put U2 down to defend Coldplay. You must not be as strong of U2 fans as you are theirs. And for the person who said Coldplay won a grammy, well, so did Milli Vanilli. The Unforgettable Fire is a masterpiece and if anyone can’t hear Clocks is a cheap imitation from the opening notes to the closing ones, they must be blind as well as deaf.
Lastly, I find this entire rumor hard to accept due to the fact that the person claimed Bono was running and hurrying to the car. That’s an awful lot to explain in detail when you don’t stop for several moments to talk. Did he scream it out breathless as he ran? The person’s account doesn’t add up and therefore I question its credibility.

Daria,
The difference is Bono is in the greatest rock band and he is the first to admit he is no saint. BUT, he talks up other deserving groups. As far as writing songs for others… that record speaks for itself. Good luck to you.

Isn’t all this getting way the hell away from the initial subject of the conversation (rumors about the next album)? Besides I don’t much care for Coldplay anyhow. I’m just kind of ambivalent towards them. If U2 are inspired by one of their songs I’m not going to comment on that because I’ve not listened to hardly any Coldplay at all. I would like to see another blues inpsired song from U2 like “Silver and Gold” at some point. “The Ordinary Land” is a good title for an album, but it sounds more like a title for a Springsteen album, like a sequel to “Ghost of Tom Joad” which is an awesome album.

Val: I agree! Thank you!
Chris Martin is too arrogant and obnoxious for his own good, or my liking. I am not impressed. He is weasely ugly looking thing I can’t stand to look at and his voice is crap. He’s got much too big of an attitude for his own good. Before all this pro-Coldplay stuff I never even gave them a second thought, but now that I have, they are nowhere in the same building with U2.
Pamela: Everything you said is exactly right, thank you!
Rabbit: Spare me. Of course everyone was influenced by somebody else. But nobody ever claimed the Clash was inspired by U2. It’s a what came first, the chicken or the egg thing.

War is better than anything the Clash ever did IMO, as The Unforgettable Fire blows away anything by Coldplay. UF is much too underappreciated by U2 fans. It’s a great album, listen to it again!

for everyone who is saying clocks is a rip off etc….. u2 have never ripped anyone off before? desire?
anyone who has listened to talking heads’ earlier stuff can also make pretty strong comparisons to sections of songs on AB – Eno’s influence no doubt. In summary Coldplay isn’t the first band to be told they have ripped off another bands style. Many people think Edge’s playing is distinctive. Yet this minimalist guitar playing style can be heard on early Pink Floyd albums. For those who still think U2 are the best band in the world, to quote Bono “you glorify the past, cause the futures dried up”. Except here the future hasn’t dried up.

If you read the Amazon.com review of A rush of Blood… it actually makes a comparison of the album between the Verve and Pink Floyd. Perhaps Coldplay aren’t ripping U2 off. Maybe they are ripping off Pink Floyd. Many belive U2 have ripped off Pink Floyd – there’s your common deliminator.

Several of you seem rather dense. Get a clue. The point here is not if U2 ever ripped anyone off, the point is, once someone ripped you off, you cannot rip them off, because it was you to begin with and it would all come full circle, you would be ripping off yourself and not the ‘new’ band who ripped you off see? Or, in other words, here’s the song Coldplay stole from U2, now we’re stealing it back! LMAO!

coldplay aren’t ripping off u2..but its common knowledge that chris martin is a fan of U2. He’s said it many times in interviews and has made references to Bono in concert…since he hasn’t directly mentioned Pink Floyd, I believe its safer to say that U2 are a pretty big influence on Coldplay’s act. For the record, i love Clocks…

I never said that the War album is a rip off of The Clash. I said Coldplay is no more a watered down U2 than U2 at the time was a watered down Clash. A statement I’ve heard several times before. And to all of those that call Chris Martin pompous and obnoxious while blowing smoke up Bono’s butt are absolutely clueless. I don’t see how you can criticize one guy for having a similar personality to your God Bono. And what do I see here? Even criticism of Martin’s looks. Like Bono is Mr. Supermodel. Are U2 fans really this insecure that a band might be making better music than the boys? Sure seems like it. Besides, Coldplay sounds more like Jeff Buckley than U2.

No band grows up in a sealed jar somewhere in isolation from the rest of the musical world. Every good band is a combination of influences plus a special ingredient (which IMO Coldplay definitely possess). And who else thinks that naming your next album “Ordinary Land” is an open invitation for puns from the critics who may hate it, 🙂 ?

The Unforgettable fire and Clocks are 2 completely different tunes, musically and structurally. The only thing that bears resemblance is the tempo, but that doesn’t mean anything. The opening piano motif is simply a descending arpeggio in the key of Eb. UF has a descending guitar figure that could be mistaken as an arpeggio, but is really an Edge riff using a few notes of a chord(arpeggio). You cant copyright an arpeggio. Both tunes are completely different, but share an uptempo sweeping musical feel. Anyway.

Huh? Yes, Bono IS Mr. Supermodel! *sigh*
Bono has earned the right to be pompous. Paul McCartney is pompous too. But they were not pompous in their early days. They have proven their greatness and it cannot be denied. Let’s see a long, sustained career of 20 years or more and 12 successful albums before Martin has any right to mouth off. Even if he does achieve that he will remain a butt ugly spaz though. I’m betting it won’t happen. Coldplay will probably break up, fade into oblivion or something. But time will tell.

Beat doesn’t count. It doesn’t sound the same. Clocks SOUNDS like The Unforgettable Fire. Only Clocks has a shittier tune, very redundant, very duh-duh-duh, duhduhduhduh, while UF maintains its beautiful tune throughout. Coldplay is overrated, almost as much as Norah Jones.
Oh BTW Ryan since when do you follow Bono to the shithouse?

Such bollocks! Coldplay influenced by U2? Yeah surely, but I can give you some other names: Echo & The Bunnymen, The Chameleons…and a few other 80’s bands. I think it all runs down to a certain “atmosphere” in the music, which is similar.
And talking about the Edges’ distinctive guitar-sound? Anyone ever listened to some tracks of THE COMSAT ANGELS or THE SOUND back in the eighties? Check it out!

Since this topic is off the main page I almost don’t see the point with another response but what the hell. Annie, how can you say Bono was not pompous from the start and that his attitude came with time? He was comparing U2 to the Beatles after recording Boy. Bono himself admits “megalomania started early with U2.”

Bono is God and I don’t believe he takes shits and I want that autographed copy of Rather Go Blind!

Remember that Bono said “Elevation” was inspired by “Get off my cloud” by the Stones. They don’t sound much the same, but when U2 is inspired they usually improve upon the inspiration by 10 fold:)

HAHAHAHA!! How could anyone believe this? Would Bono admit to copying anybody with as big an ego as he has? No way!
AND- WHY would Bono deliver all this discreet info to some nobody on the street when he hasn’t told the press or anyone who’s met him at the studio? Like somebody else said, if he was running so fast to the car when did he have time to discuss all this?! I think somebody sent this into your mailbox to pull everyone’s chain and they are laughing their asses off! This is probably the first of many lame rumors and false titles and info to come.

‘Clocks’ is an awesome song, but I really don’t see any connection between U2 and Coldplay… I really didn’t like ATYCLB at all, but POP kills any other record out there, Coldplay’s included… oh yeah, and that rumour is the lamest one I’ve ever heard…

I’m a big fan of both U2 and Coldplay, and just thought I’d add my two cents onto this debate/argument…
I love “A Rush Of Blood” – it has great songs, and I think Coldplay themselves are just much better performers than they were previously. The album certainly has some U2 influences, but I don’t believe its a copy or a rip-off. There’s loads of influences going into the mix on that album…
A point worth considering – to me, being INSPIRED by someone DOESN’T mean COPYING them… it means that their style or songwriting pushes you in a different direction. This is something all bands do, even U2. Bono and Edge have been inspired by the younger rock bands that have come through over the past few years, and thats why they talk about doing a true rock’n’roll guitar album. They won’t copy, but they’ll absorb the styles and influences and turn it into something of their own.
So, it is possible U2 could be inspired by Coldplay, since Coldplay isn’t a U2 copy… Coldplay is a band that has been inspired by some of U2’s work (amongst many others) to do something different from their previous album. It wouldn’t be a crime for U2 to appreciate what Coldplay have done with the songs and the style of their new material.
Just my opinion, though I’ll get my flame guard ready… 😉

ATYCLB is much better than POP or anything Coldplay has ever done. I am a big U2 fan but POP is the one album I dislike by them. I don’t like Coldplay at all. I also do not believe the rumor at all. It’s bullshit.

Sounds like crap to me. Arse!
