Eminem is set to turn down his invitation to the Academy Award ceremony after organisers asked him to ‘tone down his act’ for the night. We think the — warning, mainstream press cliche coming up — controversial rapper sadly hasn’t got a hope in hell winning anyway, so that leaves only Paul Simon’s ‘Father And Daughter’, ‘I Move On’ from Chicago and ‘Burn It Blue’ from Frida to keep U2 from winning the statue for their tune The Hands That Built America. Our guess is, U2 will bag the award. Care to take a wager?

In my books they U2 certainly have it in the bag but with all the hype for Chicago makes me wonder!!! I guess we’ll see which way the judges swing on the 23rd. Any news on Bono’s back these days?

I’ve seen Chicago and heard that song in the context of the movie, seen Gangs and heard that song in context (and out of context of course), heard Paul Simon’s tune live on the Today show earlier this week, and I gotta say that Hands definitely deserves to be the winner, great movie tune that fits well. As was Eminem’s in a different way, but true, don’t think the Oscar folks are ballsy enough to give it to him. ? mark is the Frida song, ’tis the only tune I haven’t heard.

Hello U2
Bono’s two appearances this Sunday and Monday haven’t been canceled, so it looks like he’s doing better… Can’t wait for Sunday. 🙂

Well, I would like to say U2 will win it. In fact, they may very well do so. I will, however, agree with the prior statement that the hype around Chicago could fizzle out U2’s hopes, and it’s quite possible that Paul Simon’s legendary status might get in the way. It’s also VERY possible that the Academy will see U2 as too political (and therefore a liability to their public image), to give them the award. Paul Simon has always been anti-war about just about anything, so if that’s how they’re going to play up the awards, it might go to him. I know U2’s status has been peace, but their near-silence on this topic might give the Academy cold feet.
Wow, that was unnecessarily long eh? LOL. What do you think?

I don’t care if U2 win an Oscar Award.

Sir Paul McCartney’s legendary status didnt help him last year for Vanilla Sky. So Paul Simon shouldnt fare any better. I hope U2 can survive the Chicago hype…because that movie stinks! U2’s song is from the context of the film and defineatly SHOULD win.

Keep in mind too that giving U2 the Oscar might be a way for the Academy to throw a bone to Scorsese and Gangs of New York – generally seen as a flawed almost-great epic – without actually giving it any substantive honors. They did the same thing to “Evita” several years ago.

I’m with scott- I don’t give a fuck if U2 wins an Oscar. It’d be nice to have some Bono facetime on tv (non-politically related) because I think he’s hot and I miss the rock star version of him, but the Oscars blow in mighty proportions. Plus, “Hands” is a lame song. I wish I could get over that sentiment, but I can’t. I hope they don’t embarrass themselves like they did on the Today show broadcast. If they can get Luciano Pavarotti as previously rumoured, it should help a lot. ah, Bono. I love ya buddy. 🙂

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Hands is only nominated because of the film it is tied with. It’s really just another nod to Gangs of New York and Martin Scorsese, not the song or U2. If U2 had written a fantastic song that was brilliant in the context of say… a typical Chevey Chase movie, do you think it would be nominated?

It was reported on Entertainment Tonight yesterday that U2’s performance had been confirmed for Oscar night. Get your VCR’s ready. Good luck guys!

Has anyone thought that maybe U2 is behind Eminem? Think for a minute– Em’s message is a little more raw but they are both speaking from their passions (their experiences)and both speaking the same message– what’s wrong with people having a voice for things they live or believe is wrong in the world? In my opinion if U2 doesn’t get it then Em defintely deserves it as much as they do. Lose Yourself is about living your dreams and going after what you want in life just like the lyrics in Hands That Built America that says:
“On the spray of a new lined star
You gotta live in your dreams. Don’t make them so hard.”
For that matter most of U2’s music talks about not giving up on anything that you believe in that you can make a difference if you have a voice no matter who you are. So betting that U2 is proud of Em for speaking the Truth something U2 is all about. As for the people on the posting that say they don’t care if U2 wins or not–One question–Why are you over here looking at a U2 site then and potentially wasting your time to post? Just my opinion but thanks for listening 🙂

I know we have to, but it’s ridiculous to be discussing Chicago within this context — they don’t nominate original screenplays and screenplay adaptations in the same category, why take an adaptation of a classic musical that’s been translated to film and nominate one of its songs? It fits in with the theme of the film beautifully — of course it does, IT’S A MUSICAL, it was created as a stage musical. So if the Academy chooses it above all the other nominees, they will, AGAIN, be showing themselves to be absolutely clueless.
I want U2 to win this because they really do want this badly — it’s a long ride from the 7 Towers to the Oscars. Edge in particular is very into film, and to grow up loving someone’s films, like Scorcese’s, and then getting the chance to contribute to one of them with an original song, and on such a topic, and then getting nominated for something like the Oscar…of course they want it. The pitfalls that I can see: lots of older fathers with “second families” vote in these things, which makes them partial to Paul Simon’s song. And lots of dorks who think laughable little white boy Eminem is cutting edge who think it will make them seem cool. They may be scared off by Bono’s politics and mouth, but then again, I think a lot of them agree with Bono’s politics and envy him his mouth. It’s not U2’s best work, but Stevie Wonder won for I Just Called To Say I Love You, certainly not his best work, and not from a film as good as Gangs, but it was a real charge to see him win, and it will be to see our boys do it. But don’t forget, this is the same organization that wouldn’t let Phil Collins sing Against All Odds when it was nominated because he was too rock and roll, and handed it over to Ann Reinking!!!! BTW, rumor (forgive me!) has it that they MAY open the show, so make sure you have your VCRs ready from jump…

Paul Simon’s song is gorgeous and simple. I think it’s a much better song than Hands. And for that matter, I think Lose Yourself is a far, far better song than either of them.

I personaly think Eminem “should” win the award. I love U2 but rap really is still black balled from certain award ceremonies and that’s bull shit. I think Eminem is the most talented artist today.

I do hope U2 win. However if the song was called ‘the hands that built britain’ or ‘the hands that built New Zealand’ it would not even be in the running.
OK, the cynic in me says that if the film didn’t have ‘New York’ in the title it also wouldn’t be nominated. It’s a crap film, made in front of cardboard looking sets anyway. …IN MY OPINION.
