U2 at the Oscars

U2 will not have the opportunity to experience the traditional red carpet treatment at the Academy Awards because organizers have scaled back the pre-show arrivals. Oscar organizers decided it was unfitting to have a splashy arrivals because the country is at war. Arriving guests will not stop for interviews and photographs; instead, they will enter the Kodak Theatre directly through a private entrance.

U2 fans can expect to see the band wearing a peace symbol pin at the awards ceremony on Sunday night. According to a report at DeHavilland, U2 are among the celebrities who have ordered a peace symbol badge designed by film producer Julie Bergman Sender. Sender has created the pin specifically for entertainers who wish to make a statement of peace at the Oscars.

Additionally, if U2 receive the Oscar for Best Song, they will receive a “Dove of Peace” 18k gold abstract pin designed by Henry Dunay. The pin is being given to all Oscar presenters and recipients, so they may express their desire for worldwide peace.

  1. Joan Rivers and her offspring Melissa will still be there doing arrival interviews; it just won’t be on the red carpet. They will be in an interview room inside the Kodak.

OT: Today is the 5 yr anniversary of the last gig of the PopMart tour (Jo’burg).

  3. PC, you just ruined my day — when I read the first paragraph, my first reaction was, thank God, they’ll be spared that shrewish harpy and her useless spawn. Maybe with all the extra security and tension they’ll be able to dodge them. Please, please let J Lo or someone show up tacky and half-naked to serve as a diversion!!

  7. I love the Dove of Peace. Anything in the name of Peace is beatiful. Thats what they are fighting for now!!! as we speak. No matter how you feel about the war, its all a mute point, now.. All that we can hope for is Peace and soon. The Oscars will probably go on. I do look for other celebrities to pull out, however.
    God Bless the World.

  9. i think u2 will defintley win now, what with the extremely patriotic nature of their song. i said it last year at the super bowl, but it amazed me that during that event the most patriotic artists where british (paul) and irish (u2) hehe, and its happening again with u2!

  11. I just hope & pray that the Kodak is sealed up tighter than the UN building in NYC. I’m scared to death for their safety. Yeah, I’m being pessimistic, but what else can I be? I’m horrified at what Bush is doing in the name of my country, but I am darn proud the guys’ll be wearing peace pins. Well done!

PS: Not at all sad over the lack of red carpet. I’m more interested in seeing them perform and, hopefully, win!

  13. I do not mean to offend as I am grateful for this site and the hard workers who maintain it, but should our posts be edited ? Should we promote freedom of speech as long as it is not intentionally malicious?

  15. Umaar, the current military action shouldn’t have any bearing on the Oscar voting (re: song subject)… the voting was over weeks ago.

  17. Maybe the LACK of the red carpet treatment will help Bono to be more humble in accepting the Oscar and the ONLY 4 letter word he’ll use is LOVE! Ha ha..I’m joking of course.

  19. maybe…but i’m sure that the censors will be on red alert no matter what if they win. you have to admit, though, the “fucking brilliant” speech at the globes was quite the classic moment.

See it this way – while you are posting on this site, you are speaking in our house. In our house, we would like people to be civil and not offend us or our other guests. ‘Freedom of speech’ comes with responsibility. Some people don’t have it – so we have to help them a little. And that’s the last time I’m discussing the site on this site. If you have any other questions please take it to e-mail and try to stay on topic within the comments section. Thank you.

  23. You know, after Bono’s “fuck up the mainstream” line at the Grammy’s in ’93, they started calling the broadcast delay the “Bono delay!” That’s why I was shocked at the Golden Globes that he got that past them! This boy has a history! But I don’t think anyone will be nodding off at the Oscars, they’ll be looking to play off or bleep anyone who mentions the war, never mind profanity. Speaking of U2 and TV censors, about 10 years ago, they ran a “special” here that was footage from the Interference video with a wrap-around from BP Fallon, and whoever was in charge of censoring was a bit off the beam. They must have been preparing for the next bit where Our Lardence says “shit,” but they jumped the gun and bleeped Edge saying “context!” And Larry’s dirty word went out over the airwaves unscathed! That Edge and his context, does he kiss his mother with that dirty mouth?????

  25. I’m not a celebrated artist and I probly won’t be watching the entire Oscars show. I admire vonb’s illustration of speech being regulated by “the roof” you’re under. Which is why i’m comfortable posting here in the first place. Thanks Vonb for your work. Yet, the red carpet is not the DOMAIN of the Oscars or even of the Celebs..it is the domain of free speech and journalism. In the letter the war hadn’t broken…thus the chain of events are governing what the “Celebs” and not the Oscars would feel comfy talking about. I know for a fact that most people at the oscars, of any profession, have the intelligence and courtesy to know how to speak NOT ONLY about light-hearted things but ALSO serious things. Emotions might be running high for such “artists”, yet, they DO still have a responsibility to themselves and their public and their art to let us know what THEY will do in the future? War movies or peace movies? How about a movie concerning the history of Hollywood blacklisting in the McCarthy era? Are they preparing for the new movie market in Iraq? Is it good news or bad news that the war is on for these artists? Are they only going to talk about peace with those wearing THE PIN?
