No Oscar For U2

Sadly, U2 didn’t take home the Oscar for Best Music (Song) tonight at the Oscar’s. They lost out to &#34Lose Yourself&#34 by Eminem. U2 did, however, perform a moving version of &#34The Hands That Built America&#34 – with the last verse changed in light of the conflict in Iraq.

      Different lyrics:

    7. I love Hands, but IMO “Lose Yourself” is just as deserving if not more, and suits its film better.

    9. Eminem wins, eh? WTF?? Sorry, I’ve no respect for any of his music. Hands should have won – hell even the theme for Frida should have garnered the award before Slim Shady.

    11. Yeah, every song would be better than Eminem, this is just lame, he didn’t even bother showing up at the awards, and his music is horrible.

    13. abelbour – i was wondering the same thing about Adam’s glasses! I’m a bit disappointed that they didn’t win, but oh well – the Eminem song was good IMO. I still would have liked to see U2 win . . .

    17. i for one am extremely pissed because the song was amazing live, and eminem didn’t even have the fucking decency to show up, and well them not winning made my mom cry too, i’mw anting to go into film, and to see my favorite band win an oscar would have been amazing for me, but isntead its to eminem

    19. Eminem deserved to win: his song actually fit well with his film. U2’s song was good, but it was clumsily tacked on to the end of the movie, during the closing credits. I liked the changed lyrics tonight, though…

    21. Thank God!..u2 didn’t win!..just like martin scorsese both artist are mavericks! geniuslike!
U2, should focused on their new album, get in the studio and do a new masterpiece!
leave this oscar shit and concentrate on making another better !

    23. Eminem? Eminem?

      Take me outta this place…

Great performance though, loved the lyric change…you can always count on the boys if not the Academy!

    27. Moving my ass… they should have stuck with the original 9/11 themed last verse, and shouldn’t have cut out the middle verse. This is the first time that I’m really annoyed by a U2 performance, because the band was so tight and they sounded great… just did not like the lyric change and the abreviated version. And as for losing to Eminem, so be it… Loose Yourself was a really good song, and a commercial hit. It was just as deserving as Hands was. I’m still pissed about the lyric change though.

    29. And Eminem not showing up didn’t have anything to do with a “lack of respect” or “not having the decency” to show up… he didn’t show because the accademy would only let him perform if he toned back the performance and edited his lyrics. If someone told me I had to edit my lyrics, I wouldn’t show up either. U2 should have taken a que from Eminem and stuck with the original full version of the song or not performed at all. And if you’re going to make an anti-war protest, just come out with it. Don’t hide it in changed lyrics that only fans of the band are going to notice, and adding on the opening drum beat to an anti-war song at the end just to cement the point for any who had doubts. Come out with it… at least Michael Moore, jackass and bafoon that he is, didn’t tried to hide anything. He’s still a moron though.

    31. Alright, screw the oscars, U2 doesn’t need to win an award to be any better. All they have to do is keep doing what they’re doing, making beautiful, powerful music! Its just an award, who really cares? They still rock harder than anyone else out there, and the fans know it! Now give us another album and tour to be proud of boys!

    33. Well, one thing we can all agree on is that Colin introduced them in a cool way, and King Bono really yelled his nuts off at the operatic part of the song… And Jeez that WAS a fast freakin’ mp3 of the song, holy crap!!!

    35. Next time they perform on one of these shows, why don’t they make Adam stand in the john, maybe the security cameras will pick him up…Eminem, my cracked ass. U2 are in very good company when it comes to not getting an Oscar. That bit they did with the 59 award winners was a real eye opener…Dustin Hoffman didn’t get one for The Graduate or Midnight Cowboy, Nicholson didn’t get one for Cuckoo’s Nest, even Teresa Wright, who is an excellent actress who made some wonderful films back, back in the day, only won one, and for Mrs. Miniver, and that was at the time more of a sentimental choice, she’d had better roles in better films. And Peter O’Toole getting a lifetime achievement Oscar after seven nominations and no wins…what really bothers me is that I know it bothers them. Know what else bothered me? Babs saying “Bono” instead of U2 in her little preamble.

    37. What irks me about Moore isn’t his attitude- it’s in the right place- it’s that he was rewarded for a film that deliberately fudged facts and staged “truth”. Zoo it ain’t. I dig Bono’s lyric change- but not the taped vocal echo supporting his operatic bridge. U2 went about making their peace point like men- not making asses of themselves. You may now return to your regularly scheduled illegal American aggression. Good night from Santa Barbara, CA.

    43. I was rooting for U2 to lose just because I knew that many U2 fans that put way too much emphasis on this nonsense would actually get angry about the loss. I find emotional outbursts over something so trivial to be pretty darn funny.

    45. Ok, call me a traitor, but U2 not winning the Oscar is good news for next year’s U2 related entry: “Time enough for tears” from Jim Sheridan’s “In America” written by Bono, Gavin Friday and Maurice Seezer – sung by Andrea Corr. The finished song has just been spliced into the movie which will see its release in November. Just in time for next year’s Academy Awards.

    47. sorry, my English is bad, well, I believe that U2 with or without Oscar is a wonderful band, the best one for my, but what it saddens to me it is that now until the Academy it is left guian by the tendencies that imposes Mtv, I hate Eminem… because is spokesman of a generation without name, generation to which I belong (I’m 17 yera’s old), Gangs of New York is not for anything a great film (my favorite one was The Hours), but in many senses The Hands… it continues being superior to Lose Yourself, and if some other song deserved to win that was the one of Frida. Sad… but the Academy every year stinks out more. And we already know that the Oscar, as most of the awards is a farce, anyway… U2 made a great performance and is a beautiful song

    53. jesus, what a bad performance of hands, I hate to say this, but for the first time I really think Bono’s voice sucked bigtime. also, the opera part sounded totally fucked, only cool thing was when larry played the start of sunday bloody sunday after the performance

    59. BJR, I have to agree with you on Bono’s voice. It sounds “broken”. But apart from that it is the best best version I’ve heard so far. Great strings, great bass and drums. Yes, defenately great to see the whole band on stage.

    61. Annie, I know what you mean, I usually surf during commercials because they make me sick, but didn’t last night because I was afraid I’d miss the boys. Everything from Carmen to The Blue Danube to S&G’s Homeward Bound used as a bloody jingle. I’m telling you, opinions differ on what’s going on in the world right now, but Bob Dylan as background music for a Victoria’s Secret commercial is one of the 7 signs of the apocalypse…PC, I thought the same thing about Adam sans glasses, he’s used contacts periodically in the past, but I can’t shake the feeling that MAYBE he now needs reading glasses and was not prepared for the hassle of bifocals or changing glasses, DO NOT ASK ME HOW I KNOW!!…vonb, thanks for that info, I didn’t know, and it’s funny, when Julianne Moore lost after being nominated in two categories, I said to myself, poor thing, now she knows how Bono felt at the GG back in ’93, and that was two nominations in the same category. I hope they get the nomination, but I’m not going to start worrying about it till around September!!

    63. Ummmmm… Apparently I’m the only one that thought that Paul Simon should have won. It was his best song in years.
Lose Yourself was also a worthy winner. It is a great song that fit the movie perfectly.
Most of you need to take off your U2-colored glasses. I’m as much a fan as the next, but The Hands That Built America just doesn’t cut it. Compared to U2’s catalog and the other nominees, it is weak. You have to admit that if it wasn’t by U2, you’d probably yawn and never give it a second listen.
Maybe that’s a bit harsh, but it isn’t an Oscar worthy song and U2 is capable of a lot more. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them come away with one in the future when they really deserve it. We all know that Bono should have come away with one for In the Name of the Father.

    65. Michael Moores acceptance speech was the greatest moment of the whole night. Right on! About U2’s perforance, Bono’s voice really wasn’t working right in the operatic verse. It sounded extremely weird, even weirder than the studio version. Face it bono, you simply can’t sing opera. But esides that the performance was moving and nice.. I loved Bono’s changed verse. And I do think many got the anti-war message Bono sent out. It was obvious. i’m actually glad U2 didn’t win the oscar, all these awards and unconditional love everyone seems to have for U2 only makes them dull. They need to keep their feet to the ground. I never thought the academy would choose Eminem, but cool they did!

    67. agreed Tom–Paul Simon had a great song and his performance was wonderful, great voice after all this time 🙂 “u2-colored glasses” – lol, that’s great! and true, IMHO “hands” is blah. On that note, the whole show was rather blah w/ the occasional eye-rolling anti-war moment.

    73. I am glad U2 did NOT win, cause I did not want to see “Bono” and the boys go off about the War in any sense…the lyric change is ok- fine, tucked in nicely, but, I fear Bono might have made an a bad decision…it wasnt a night to pontificate a al Michael Moore.

    75. like i said before, the oscars are a friggin joke. the audience is filled with a bunch of no talents. does anyone honestly think people like haley berry and nick cage are artists? the only artists in the audience are U2, the directors, writers, and production designers and SFX guys, and maybe one or two actors. people who can start with a blank page or a melody in their head. these are the artists.

    77. jd that’s a pretty unaware point of view and it’s apparent from your remarks that you are not yourself an artist, nor are you close to any actual artists. Do you really think you have to start with a blank page to be an artist? Wow, that’s a scary chain of thoughts you have there.

    81. There’s no justice in the world. Emin-bloody-em. F*ck him. I sat up til 5 AM here in Ireland just to watch that git win it. And he didn’t even show up.
Actually, does anyone think that the Academy didn’t give it to U2 as Bono is well known to make statements on wars, etc., and they didn’t want any, uh, controversy?
Personally I would have loved to have heard Bono speaking out against war.

    87. I don’t like Eminem, I realy don’t, I even despise him, but I think he deserved victory for this song. It’s a good song from a very good movie, no matter what kind of guy he is… It’s not about being great personality, it’s about how good a song is.
In my opinion Hands are only semi-good song (I’m a big u2 fan so don’t flame me now 🙂 ), and I wouldn’t like to heare any song remotely like it on the new album… I rooted for U2, but only b/c it’s U2 and not B7c of the song itself…

I haven’t heard his speech, but that would be: “go raibh maith agat agus anois…”

… two courses of Gaelic and that’s just about all I know.

Seeing as he was probably addressing more than one person, it would be ‘go raibh maith agaibh’. He probably dropped in a ‘mile’ as well. ‘Mile maith’, a thousand thanks.

Sounds a bit like: “Gurruh meeluh mah uh-geve, uhgus aneesh…”

    91. That’s exactly what he said. Here’s his whole intro (much, but not all, of which I’m sure he went off script for – it was all said in a very heartfelt manner/not as if being read, plus he never looked at the teleprompter):

“The epic drama that took place in the Five Corners section of New York, at a time when passions ran high and might often triumphed over what was right, was beautifully and brutally visualized in the film the Gangs of New York. One of this year’s nominated songs is from that film and it pays tribute to the new Americans who left Ireland in search of a better life willing to fight for it at any expense, at a time when fighting was a matter of survival. The band U2 have written songs over time that have been about beauty, about freedom, about faith, about trust, about the freedom of speech – and pride also. But not at anyone else’s expense and not at the expense of another person’s life. And it is my complete honor – and they captured all this in the film, in the song they wrote for the film and it is my complete honor – go raibh mile maith agat agus anois – ladies and gentlemen: U2.”

    93. I for one didn’t like the peformance. I give them credit for even attending, though. I am sure Larry had a great time! cough

    95. It was an awful performance. Bono’s voice was off and they cut out the middle verse, to say nothing of the song’s weaknesses in general. The band and the strings were tight, but that’s to be expected since most band music at award shows is pre-recorded (at the Super Bowl, for example, the rhythm section was all pre-recorded).

The worst part, of course, is the quality of film songs U2 have done in the past, esp. for Wim Wenders, which have never been recognized. “Stay” would have been as dominant this year as, say, Eminem at the end of 8 Mile.

    97. I think the real sin was that both songs from In the Name of the Father were never recognized. Thief, particularly its context within the plot of the film, was chilling and completely unforgettable.

THTBA has grown on me though.

    99. I doubt the band music was prerecorded. One, there was a full orchestra present; two, Larry’s brief SBS proved that he was plugged in at least.

    101. Hm, i thought it was a very beautiful and tasteful performance… I dont understand the whining about this song; it is very simple and beautiful. I dont know if it deserves to win an oscar, but u2’s performance was excellent. Especially the opera part by Bono. Magnificent.

    103. PC: Sinead O’Connor’s been singing Thief in her recent live shows. I caught one show in London and the thrill of hearing Thief performed live was just overwhelming.

    105. I love U2 musics but I hate Bono’s speeches, so I am deeply happy he did not get the Oscar. I could not put up with another moron lecturing people on the stage.

    107. I hope I get to see her perform it at some point. I imagine I’ll probably have to catch her over there though. LOL. Chances are she won’t be over here on a Star Spangled Banner tour anytime soon. LOL 😀 Thanks for the heads up on that.

    109. P.S. One of my favorite ever Bono stories is when he and Gavin had each tried doing a vocal take of Thief and neither sounded right. And they both knew, without saying it, that Sinead was the right voice for the song. Bono and Gav stared at each other each knowing who the other was thinking of, and finally Bono said “Fine. But YOU call her!” LOL 😀

    111. So I’m betting when they both thought Andrea Corr was the best voice for the new song ‘Time enough for tears’ they both went: “Fine. But I get to call her!”

    113. Although I am a HUGE U2 fan, I agree that Eminem (who I dislike intensely as a person) wrote a better song in “Lose Yourself”. If you saw his performance of it at the Grammy’s – well, I’ll say no more. That being said, I was completely amazed that the stodgy Academy would perceive that as well. I really thought U2 would win. Bono’s rewriting of the verse to relate to the Iraq war was exactly what U2 have always done – expressed their views through their music and that’s the way it should be. That after all is their great gift. Those words again reminded us that it’s not “them and us” it’s all of us together.

    115. Some people are still saying bono can’t sing the opera.. but im pretty sure it was bono who sang the opera part.. at least according to a faq on a u2 site (i think it was u2wanderer.org)…. but anyways that opera part was amazing i loved it… i can’t wait to hear a full live version in their next tour if they put it on the set list

    117. Michael Moore was great so was Adriene thingyblob. Am I the only person to think that Bono has totally sold out? (and he looks a mess). I’ve loved U2 and Bono since 1985 but at the mo I think he needs to get his act together and stop being a ‘celebrity’.

    119. Bono’s a celebrity, but he’s no sellout. You don’t see him doing commercials for Jaguar and Compaq (like Sting). A car company offered U2 $25 Million to use “Streets” and they turned it down. Of course, you may have a different definition of “sellout”, but that’s where I draw the line. Bono uses his celebrity better than anyone I can think of….
I’m not disappointed with Eminem’s win. “Hands” is my all-time least favorite U2 song, and it’s not the opera part (that’s the best/most innovative part of the tune). Ready for watts next!

    121. Well, if selling records is selling out than I guess you’re right, mr.nice. In that case, U2 is just less of a sellout than just about everybody else in the music business…is that better? I was trying to point out that U2 don’t do ads or commercials for products, or let their music be used in ads or commercials for products. Moron? That’s not nice, mr. nice, you’re lucky I’m smokin’ the KB!

    123. I’m extremely happy M&M won the Oscar. He was much more deseriving of the award than U2. ‘Lose Yourself’ is a great song and his movie was exelent. A lot better that ‘Gangs’ I love ‘Hands’ but for a sound track song and overall impact ‘Lose Yourself’ is by far a winner!

    125. Eminem is NOT an artist, a singer, a talent, or anything of the nature. Of course HIS song fit HIS movie, it was all worthless. I can write the same repetative lyric over and over if I wanted to, but I don’t think I would win an award. ANY of the other nominees would have been a better choice to win, of course I would have preferred that U2 won, but I would have been happy with any of the others. That’s the biggest mistake since having Whoopie Goldberg host last years Oscars.

    127. Congrats! M&M:)Thank god you are making music today to show people there is still talent out there and make it interesting at the same time.

      Good Job

It’s definitely the best thought so far:)

    133. It is still me. I know there are sites listed above, but they just dont work.
And I really really hope that the JLo duet will never be released. I dont like this kind of involvement in the biz. That would be too much. I didnt like the Whats going on cover with those tiny superstars either. Bono should separate himself from those people. What about a duet with Michael Stipe, instead?
