Sadly, U2 didn’t take home the Oscar for Best Music (Song) tonight at the Oscar’s. They lost out to "Lose Yourself" by Eminem. U2 did, however, perform a moving version of "The Hands That Built America" – with the last verse changed in light of the conflict in Iraq.

Moving my ass… they should have stuck with the original 9/11 themed last verse, and shouldn’t have cut out the middle verse. This is the first time that I’m really annoyed by a U2 performance, because the band was so tight and they sounded great… just did not like the lyric change and the abreviated version. BJR, I have to agree with you on Bono’s voice. It sounds “broken”. But apart from that it is the best best version I’ve heard so far. Great strings, great bass and drums. Yes, defenately great to see the whole band on stage.

Everything from Carmen to The Blue Danube to S&G’s Homeward Bound used as a bloody jingle. I’m telling you, opinions differ on what’s going on in the world right now, but Bob Dylan as background music for a Victoria’s Secret commercial is one of the 7 signs of the apocalypse…PC, I thought the same thing about Adam sans glasses, he’s used contacts periodically in the past, but I can’t shake the feeling that MAYBE he now needs reading glasses and was not prepared for the hassle of bifocals or changing glasses, DO NOT ASK ME HOW I KNOW!!…vonb, thanks for that info, I didn’t know, and it’s funny, when Julianne Moore lost after being nominated in two categories, I said to myself, poor thing, now she knows how Bono felt at the GG back in ’93, and that was two nominations in the same category. I don’t like Eminem, I realy don’t, I even despise him, but I think he deserved victory for this song. It’s a good song from a very good movie, no matter what kind of guy he is… It’s not about being great personality, it’s about how good a song is.
In my opinion Hands are only semi-good song (I’m a big u2 fan so don’t flame me now 🙂 ), and I wouldn’t like to heare any song remotely like it on the new album… I rooted for U2, but only b/c it’s U2 and not B7c of the song itself…
I don’t like Eminem, I realy don’t, I even despise him, but I think he deserved victory for this song. It’s a good song from a very good movie, no matter what kind of guy he is… It’s not about being great personality, it’s about how good a song is.
In my opinion Hands are only semi-good song (I’m a big u2 fan so don’t flame me now 🙂 ), and I wouldn’t like to heare any song remotely like it on the new album… I rooted for U2, but only b/c it’s U2 and not B7c of the song itself…

Hm, i thought it was a very beautiful and tasteful performance… I dont understand the whining about this song; it is very simple and beautiful. I dont know if it deserves to win an oscar, but u2’s performance was excellent. Especially the opera part by Bono. Magnificent.

PC: Sinead O’Connor’s been singing Thief in her recent live shows. I caught one show in London and the thrill of hearing Thief performed live was just overwhelming.

I love U2 musics but I hate Bono’s speeches, so I am deeply happy he did not get the Oscar. I could not put up with another moron lecturing people on the stage.

And they both knew, without saying it, that Sinead was the right voice for the song. Bono and Gav stared at each other each knowing who the other was thinking of, and finally Bono said “Fine. But YOU call her!” LOL 😀

Although I am a HUGE U2 fan, I agree that Eminem (who I dislike intensely as a person) wrote a better song in “Lose Yourself”. If you saw his performance of it at the Grammy’s – well, I’ll say no more. That being said, I was completely amazed that the stodgy Academy would perceive that as well. I really thought U2 would win. Bono’s rewriting of the verse to relate to the Iraq war was exactly what U2 have always done – expressed their views through their music and that’s the way it should be. That after all is their great gift. Those words again reminded us that it’s not “them and us” it’s all of us together.

Some people are still saying bono can’t sing the opera.. but im pretty sure it was bono who sang the opera part.. at least according to a faq on a u2 site (i think it was u2wanderer.org)…. but anyways that opera part was amazing i loved it… i can’t wait to hear a full live version in their next tour if they put it on the set list

Michael Moore was great so was Adriene thingyblob. Am I the only person to think that Bono has totally sold out? (and he looks a mess). I’ve loved U2 and Bono since 1985 but at the mo I think he needs to get his act together and stop being a ‘celebrity’.

Bono’s a celebrity, but he’s no sellout. You don’t see him doing commercials for Jaguar and Compaq (like Sting). A car company offered U2 $25 Million to use “Streets” and they turned it down. Of course, you may have a different definition of “sellout”, but that’s where I draw the line. Bono uses his celebrity better than anyone I can think of….

I’m extremely happy M&M won the Oscar. He was much more deseriving of the award than U2. ‘Lose Yourself’ is a great song and his movie was exelent. A lot better that ‘Gangs’ I love ‘Hands’ but for a sound track song and overall impact ‘Lose Yourself’ is by far a winner!

Eminem is NOT an artist, a singer, a talent, or anything of the nature. Of course HIS song fit HIS movie, it was all worthless. I can write the same repetative lyric over and over if I wanted to, but I don’t think I would win an award. ANY of the other nominees would have been a better choice to win, of course I would have preferred that U2 won, but I would have been happy with any of the others. That’s the biggest mistake since having Whoopie Goldberg host last years Oscars.

And I really really hope that the JLo duet will never be released. I dont like this kind of involvement in the biz. That would be too much. I didnt like the Whats going on cover with those tiny superstars either. Bono should separate himself from those people. What about a duet with Michael Stipe, instead?
