Miss Sarajevo Is Da Bomb

During a time of war, UK music television and radio executives are reviewing their playlists and removing songs that could remind people of war, reports The Times. Execs say that banning certain songs is required so as not to upset listeners and advertisers.

U2’s video for “Miss Sarajevo” is among the videos banned from being shown on MTV Europe because of the images of weapons and explosions that appear in it. Videos depicting war or those with words such as “war” or “bomb” in the song title are being blacklisted.

  1. So let me see if I’ve got this…

We can have constant, in your face, real life war programming showing actual people being actually killed, but we CAN’T play songs about war or show videos depicting war.

May I please, please, please go Home now?

  3. rennie I was going to say the exact same thing. I think its retarded that the Entertaiment Bussiness starts censoring things when “insert major crisis here” is happening with the world.

I mean they dont do cenorship for the Israeli/Muslim conflict!!

  5. they SHOULD play Miss Sarajevo in times like this…
but nooo in fact they ban songs that are against war. seems to me like another case of brainwashing.
Just another example of the great democracy that is the united states. freedom of speech eh?

  7. they do the exact same thing with movies. Phone Booth (starring colin farrel, about a sniper) was supposed to come out around the DC sniper thing, but was delayed to the end of march. It’s like they can’t wait to show all the horror on the news, but when art is created depicting it or in response to it it’s banned! wtf!?

  11. For Feck sake. “Not to offend anyone”. If we’re all THAT sensitive we should lock all our doors and sit in the basement with a bag over our heads to stop the “real world” from fecking us up. Get a grip MTV.

  13. I am the first one to get pissed of about political correctness.
But I also find it ironic when people protest the government that gives the the freedom to express there opinions in the first place.

  15. Jim makes an excellent point!I always wonder when I read things like this, do these yahoos actually think we are all as stupid as they are, that we’ll swallow this nonsense?Didn’t the Gulf War start its bombing raids with Rock The Casbah blasting?? This has nothing to do with not wanting to upset people, most creative result regarding war expresses an anti-war/pro-peace-pro-REASON perspective, and that’s what they want off the airwaves.I’ve had to wade through hour upon hour of so-called news coverage, which consists of nothing more than a bunch of retired military officers gassing on and on about what they think such and such strategy is, etc. Useless and depressing, and tells us nothing about what we need to know now. And the other night, a talking head on the local ABC affiliate here said they would not be airing the footage of the Iraqis parading American dead and POWs because the footage is disturbing. Now THAT’S the function of a news organization, to decide what I can or can’t see, and to sanitize reality for my protection. By all means, don’t show it, wouldn’t want anyone to get the idea that war is brutal, inhumane, cruel and demands the highest price. So having to bear witness to what our soldiers are enduring is too disturbing for us to take, but NBC expects everyone to tune in and watch people eat worms in a hole full of snakes for entertainment. Rennie, I want to go home too, wanna share a cab?

  17. Okay… a couple of things…

Hard Truth? Um… the government gives people selective freedom of speech. Now I realize that several countries have no rights whatsoever to criticize their government, but when the government that preaches freedom of speech so loudly decides to totally ignore it? I’d say that people have a very valid right to criticize the government.

I am a Canadian, but censorship like this bothers me anywhere. Does MTV Europe think that we don’t know that there’s a war going on outside? I think that it’s very biased to favour certain videos over others because their content might touch upon a war, and when it really has nothing to do with this war that’s going on. I really wonder what gives them the right to decide what we get to watch. Don’t you think that if we find something offensive that we can just turn it off, or simply let them know to simply change their format? Until people actually complain about what they air, I don’t see what gives them the right to not screen videos that even remotely mention the war. “Lucky” by Radiohead is a video not allowed to be shown when it was actually made for an anti-war compilation… how does that make any sense at all?

  19. There will never be the perfect balance of censorship and personal freedom that will please everyone. I hear a lot of people say there should not be any censorship well the are they saying child porn and hate websites should be allowed to exist? If the answer is no then who should decide what should and what should not be censored?

  21. eMpTyV- That is the all time classic post EVER!!! Fantastic!!!
It seems logical to me to play vids like MS now, is this not the exact RIGHT time for it??? U2 is probably the only artist that makes the videos and music that reflect on times like these wheter you agree with them or not, and it just seems ignorant to censor them now of all times… Besides if I see any more 50Cent/RealWorld/RoadRules/10spot/TRL/BackstreetBoys/NSync/Eminem/BlingBling/Cribs/Ozzy’s-Dog-shits-itself marathons, I’m going to launch a scud at my TV…

  23. I’m agains censorship period. Once this monstrosity starts it isn’t satisfied and consumes something else. If you find something offensive don’t watch it. As far as the Plato reading HArdTruth is concerned child pornography is illegal. That is a whole different ball of wax. Besides what would you do if your hero Plato fell under the axe of censorship?

  25. Just finished watching 24, with Keifer Sutherland, in which a nuclear bomb was set off in Los Angeles on the last episode. This episode deals with middle eastern “other” governments that knew who the bomb was purchased from. World war 3 is being discussed etc.. What??? does the Pentagon have stock in the Fox channel?? Can they show this? Don’t get me wrong it is problably the best television show on network tv, but please, to say a video/song is going to disturbe the public more than “war” tv. The mindless people, who never turn off the TV, will more likely see this than hear/see a video by U2 or any of the above mentioned songs. And don’t even begin to tell me what I can watch. Matter of fact, John Ashcroft get away the Hell away from my rights. Run the non stop hours of reality “War” but leave me the hell alone with my choice of music. Well, lets not stop here, let’s ban every country music song, including the Dixie Chicks, who may as well be in prison by now. If it talks about the war, God forbid, someone might what, commit some unpardonable sin. Just what would that be anyway? After last night, it appears anything goes. Unless of course you are singing it in a rock or pop manner. Sorry, this really pisses me off. Pay attention people, you should now be demostrating againist a violation of you very basic rights. Anyway, Off to listen to Sunday Bloody Sunday, and anything else I can find. Only problem is, it’s probably been banned. Really sorry this is so long, but I do still have some rights. I suppose.

  27. Censureship…it’s a moral issue. People have the right in this country to act on their own conscience when it comes to religion or free speech/expression. Just turn off the t.v….but whenever you INVOLVE yourself in the issue…such as being an artist who depends on the RIGHT of free expression to make a living…then you must do more than just turn off the t.v.
U2’s livelyhood is at stake when their videos are being shut off. I wonder what they can do about that? Thank God for the underground website 🙂

  29. Hey I ain’t on Bush’s side at all, course I voted against him though. I agree with Sue completely. I just pray as few people as possible are hurt in this conflict with Iraq. I think this removal of songs and videos from playlists is complete bs. If someone is going to be offended by a work of fiction or a creative statement, then don’t watch it. ‘Nuff said.
