Whether megalomania or humility, we’re not sure what made Bono rewrite the lyrics to the song, but here’s Bono’s version of Schubert’s Ave Maria. He performed it with Pavarotti just after a rather shaky solo performance of One, in Modena, Italy, tonight.

I can’t listen to any of these because I, gasp, don’t have an MP3 player, is that right??? I mean, Blowin’ In The Wind was bad enough, but he rewrote AVE MARIA??? I would have suggested that he used the English language arrangement that Gladys Knight and the Pips used, it’s wonderful and he’d do great things with it, but he never returns my phone calls……
Does anyone know anyplace that posted shots of the band from Ivor Novello that are larger than the little ones from the news services? They were great shots, but they’re smaller than a business card and the resolution stinks and you can’t blow them up. I think they looked great, and how nice to have shots with all four of them for a change, eh? Not that I’m not crazy for rock star Bono, but my favorite table has four legs..

I almost thought Bono had grown a mullet again when I saw this pic:
If that doesn’t work, click here

Nevermind… I’m internet-stupid. You can figure out which pic.

I enjoyed the variation on One very much. Bono’s voice sounded great! Thanks!

Bono sounded very good in the performance of “One”, he put a lot of emotion into it, the orchestra seemed a tad off….

He needed a little warming up in the first verse of One and Ave Maria, but overall I thought he sounded fabby.
On an eyewear note, I have to say (as I always have *g*) that he looks much better and younger with the thinner metal shades he’s been sporting of late than the clunky things he’s worn for the past few years, hope this is a trend. 🙂

I thought Bono was unusually quiet. A statement was made he ‘wouldn’t be addresssing the crowd’. He looked sad and pissed off a lot of the time, couldn’t wait to get off stage and at the end of the night (eventhough it was obvious 70% of the audience was there to see him!) when all the performers returned to the stage to sing a final tune, he was in the back row and did not sing.
His guitar was out of tune on One and they seemed to turn it down or switch it off after a while eventhough Bono kept strumming.

bono’s guitar is usually tuned down a half, I’d imagine the orchestra wasn’t.
The ave maria version sounded good to my ears. The language sounds similar to “The Message” tranlsation of the bible where he took the psalm he prayed before WTSHNN on the elevation tour. I wonder if these lyrics are also taken from one of those psalms?

That orchestra didn’t do a very nice job 😐 Sounds very ehh… un-U2-ish
Only positive point is Bono’s voice which seems pretty fine. And I have to agree with Paige. Bring the band next time.

Just a thought I’ve had: perhaps his somber mood was due in part to his a.) mental association of Pavarotti with his Dad, who’s only been gone a year and a half, b.) coupled with the fact the concert took place on what would have been Iris’ 77th birthday. I could certainly see those things weighing on one’s mind.
