Long-time U2 fan Ruby shares an amusing discussion she had with Steve Averill at the Rock Hall last weekend:
“I’d heard/read somewhere that Four5One had heard a half dozen tracks of the new [U2] stuff, so I was curious what they thought of the material. I asked Averill at the book signing if it was true that the new stuff was along the sonic lines of All That You Can’t Leave Behind. He initially said, ‘Yes,’ but then followed with, ‘Actually, it sounded more like War but with a harder edge…and with the depth of Achtung Baby.‘ Laughing, I asked him, ‘So you are sure they won’t turn around and give us, say, Pop part two — more techno?’ And he said, very definitely, that this was indeed a guitar-driven album.”
a harder edge than War????

“the depth of Achtung baby”…I like the sound of that!

“guitar-driven album”… I don’t like that, I’m afraid.

Please let this be true! Noticed this from Angela P’s post “Steve (Averill) mentioned that the early demos for ATYCLB had much harder guitar work and that it’s impossible to predict how the albums will sound “after they’ve been Lanoisfied and Enofied.””
Hopefully (IMHO), Chris Thomas will keep the harder edge! I love all U2’s work, but deep down I’ve always wished for more of the hard rock side of U2.

No….this is GREAT news. Looks like Edge is getting tired of the “Grace” & “Peace On Earth” fluff. I say let the man take control. My god, the only decent Edge guitar solo on ATYCLB was on “New York” I need more of that screaming guitar out of this band!

I think this was brougtht up about 6 months ago and also when Pop first initially came out…Let me stress…IT WASN’T A TECHNO ALBUM…IT WASN’T EVEN CLOSE!…If you want techno, check out marco carola, adam beyer, jeff mills, chris liebing just to name a few, now that’s techno! Pop was a dynamic album that truly showed U2 weren’t afraid to go after something different (i guess zooropa could be a testament to that as well)…but again…it wasn’t techno. and what the is wrong with Pop part two anyways? alot better than all the crap they could have left behind part two! =)

vonb, don’t harp on the guitar’s auto capabilities! my guess is, you are more of a backseat bass driver. 😉 eep.

pop had 2 guitar driven songs.. although it depends on what you consider a guitar driven song… last night on earth and discotheque
but pop was still a kick ass album.. every song could have been a single except maybe miami…

More guitar tunes than that. Gone is pretty guitar driven, and the rest with the exception of Mofo and Miami have a pretty strong guitar presence.
Personally, I want to hear Edge grab the reins and show off some more!

Any fan who says that Pop is a techno album never heard it for sure… I guess there are too many people reading magazines :))) and not listening to the CDs

Well, it’s not just ‘a guitar’-driven album, it’s ‘Edge’s guitar’-driven album, which is not quite the same I guess, the man has such an amazing, one-of-a-kind sound. I can’t wait to hear some of it. And I’m just happy that it isn’t a, let’s say, violin-driven album, they’re not the bloody Corrs for chrissake!

lets just hope bono stays away from all the crap he couldnt leave behind in trash like “hands that built america”

this is like when bono or edge mentioned in the early 90’s that their new album was going to be a “dense album” and all the journalists picked up on it and wrote that U2 was working on a “dance album”. All the talk doesn’t mean a thing until it’s shrinkwrapped.

we’ve had almost a good seven years to overcome this maniacal cliche… pop is not a techno album.

“guitar-driven” album… bono’s said that about achtung, pop, and all that. can’t he think of anything more original? how about edge-driven album.

I was just listening to pop today, and I have to agree with bernhard – pop is more “guitar-driven” that zooropa. I mean, edge’s work on “staring at the sun” is just wild. as for the new album having a harder edge than War, I say, I’ll believe that when I hear it.

Right on Lucy~ I especially dig Edge live on Staring…amazing musician. Just like the live version of Bullet…Awesome!
Whatever they call it whatever it is, whatever it sounds like…we will all purchase, listen, absorb…we will opionize the album then! I can guarantee we will all go through the normal U2 release stages…
Remember how sad it was to hear WOWY as the first release from JT? This drum machine ballad from our favorite punks, this sad, whimpy, overproduced piece of pop…( we can blame that on the 80’s in general and of course the Bangles! )
But then the U2 “Magic” sinks in, somewhere after that 5th-11th listen…I’m screaming at the top of my lungs…”and you give and you give and you give” …I think you all know what I mean. They keep giving and we should be grateful~
Cheers!~

Fan Since 80, no offense… but speak for yourself when you say “we should all be grateful.” I’m not grateful at all. I think these guys have become unbelievably lazy and Bono’s pre album spiel is so predictable. He says the same things before every album. I will buy the album, of course. But unfortunately I’m not expecting much.

I remember reading during the Elevation tour that Bono felt ATYCLB was a bit ‘overproduced’ so I do have hope that they’ll leave their songs in a more raw (louder) form on the new release. That being said, they did release the William Orbit ‘Electrical Storm’ as a single rather than the version found on the B-sides disc…

don’t misquote me …I never said “we all”…and more importantly…they are “lazy”?
How would you be able to make a statement like that when you’ve been following a 24 YO band for less than 8 years?
No they use patience to produce longevity instead of putting out an album every year that’s crap. I imagine you don’t really get the “magic”… so sorry so sad…

listen kiddies. chris thomas works with bands. he’s gonna bring out the best in them within the framework and abilities of the band. not record scratching. no synth or sampled dominanace. actually, i’d sure like to see lillywhite help out a little in te mixing dept.

what was it about pop that is such a problem? i wager that most everyone (here) who has spent time with their beloved collection in front of their system, making mix-tapes put a song or two from pop on there. -too many lines are snatched from pop to be only denied, like the red haired freckled faced step child, — finally admit that pop was a cinderella album. all true poets know the same.
