Could definitely still be a hoax, though. An elaborate one.
ok now i dunno what to think lol. that poster could be faked by someone and if it’s real then i don’t understand the dates on it.
for me,is very real!
huh. why bother making a hoax this elaborate? there’s no profit to be had that I can see, aside from stirring up some online discussion. anyway, just judging from the way U2 has done things in the past, I wouldn’t be surprised if they had decided on “solar” and then change their minds in July or August or later. so while it may be legit, it doesn’t necessarily reflect what the album end up looking like.
Very intriguing. If this turns out to be true, then that Columbian U2 spy has THE U2 scoop of all-time. A full 9 months prior to the release. If it’s a hoax, I give her credit for fooling even the most cynical U2 fans. (That poster looks awful legit guys!)
beautiful album name!
I highly doubt this is going to be the final product. Shaughn McGrath and Steve Averill were saying at the “Evening with Four5One” (at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame) that were goign to meet with U2 later on this week to talk about possible imagery to use for the new album. So I doubt it’s finished.
Another thing they said was that they’re always working on the design of the album right up until it’s due.
I’m a sceptic, so here’s the things that sort of bug me. Number 1: the inconsistent use of punctuation. I would think that the folks in marketing would pretty much have language/punctuation rules down. Case in point, you got: ‘1st single: January 2004’ then ‘Album Release:Europe and Rest of the World – March 08, 2004’. In the former, you have a space following the colon; in the latter, you don’t. Additionally, in the former, the date immediately follows the colon; in the latter, the date follows a hyphen. Number 2: the printing looks sketchy like something done on a computer. number 3: from the photo, you can’t really tell the size. It could just be an 8 x 11 piece of paper printed off the computer where someone had some fun with photoshop.
u’d be surprised what some u2 sites do for a bit of attention. Hoaxing is part and parcel of the net so don’t be surprised if it turns out to be a fake. i’d wait till interscope hold a press conference etc. i’d be disappointed if it were the real thing cos it isn’t a very good poster.
March ’04? I could knock up my girl and have a kid before this record comes out!
Why not? Have fun with it! It’s Summer time. No action happening in the U2 world. Solar = sun = light = day = “Beautiful Day” – U2 spent the 90s more concerned with the moon / the night / darkness. Solar = sun = Bono can play on the word with “Son” of God. The Old Testament story of Joshua (“The Joshua Tree”) halting the sun. In the New Testament the “Transfiguration” = his face shone like sun. Book of Revelations? Solar energy = covert messages against “oil” it’s role in wars (Iraq) and wealth & power (U.S. / Europe versus the Third World). Solar = solar system = another word for universe = universal / humanity / one > DATA. Songs for the Tour: Staring At The Sun & Gone “I’ll be up with the sun / I’m not coming down.” I like the “title” Solar = heat / brightness and continuing theme of Beautiful Day and joy. At the other end, a dark, rocking, Exit-like track called “Eclipse.” I think one of the leftover ATYCLB tracks was titled as “The Sun, The Moon, And The Stars.” I’d like to see it as AB (including The Edge’s guitar solos from the ZOOTV Tour – Mysterious Ways, Bullet, Love Is Blindness, etc.) meets Boy (Out Of Control, Tick Tock, Electric Co., etc.). “If” ATYCLB was “damage control” and bringing back the “older 80s fans” then let Solar be a full throttle assault on the “youngsters” (and everyone else too!) ATYCLB had 3 rockers (BD, Elevation, and New York) then let Solar have at least 6 rockers! Let Solar be firing on all cylinders and with guns blazing! To be on top of the world; to kick down the doors as they are inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in a year or two!
For starters, that font is entirely unconvincing — very, very few professionals use Verdana in graphic design. (In fact the only time I can think of seeing it was on Underworld’s BEAUCOUP FISH sleeve, and I’m not positive that was Verdana). And a PURPLE “U2” on a red-sun background? That’s *terrible* design work. If this poster *is* the real thing, then Four5One are slipping big time. Sooooo in other words, I’m unconvinced.
All that said, I do think “solar” is an excellent, excellent album title. So here’s hoping, anyway. 😉
I’m convinced it’s not real. The Four 5 One crowd said time and time again that they were no where near a finished. And that preliminary work on designs were expected to begin soon.
And what’s with the “Europe and the rest of the world” that’s nasty advertising there. It’s an Interscope mark on the poster, so it would be a US poster and they aren’t known for being concerned with Europe dates…and wouldn’t present it as such anyway. It would be “US” and “Rest of the World” not “US” and “Europe and the rest of the world”.
I’m not convinced, it looks like the main pic could have come straight out of the staring at the sun video, but who cares, even rumours & speculation are more exciting than nothing. Be prepared, we have months of this kinda thing to look forward to yet 😀
horribly fake. if this is real then POP was their best album.
it’s a fake — and not a very good one. the composition/production errors on it alone should tell you that.
to satisfy all the sceptics, i contacted interscope for an official comment, and the reply I received was “it is definitely not for real.”
now people, do we really want to let ourselves believe that U2 would make the same mistake twice?? NO! Paul Mac just quoted that the Tour would be in Mid 2004. The Log just reported that the “logistics Co.” has been booked for May. Now why would they wait until March to release the album and then tour before the material has circulated long enough for people to know it. So, let’s hope all this is just for fun, and just let it increase the craving for new material. Whenever it may come out and whatever it may be!!
My 2 cents, no charge. LATER!!
Do you remember the “expect nothing” promocards that were released months before Pop was released? It turned out that “expect nothing” was just a working title. Therefore, the title “Solar” should be regarded as nothing more than that.
Ah. The Expect Nothing postcards. Those featured images of the band and design work done by the Four5One guys. And it was obvious that they were professionally done, not like this error riddled poster. “Solar” may be a working title but I’m doubting this poster is anything more than a clever fake…
I seriously doubt this is real, anyone could have dreamed this up… I do like it as an album name, not real big on the picture (even though there are literally hundreds if not thousands of pictures taken to promote an album) so I’m not getting my panties in a bunch over it… However, this to me is the very baby beginning of the next U2 album and “phase” if you like, the elevation U2 is fading away and we now are at the very beginning of a new U2… Kinda like the the summer after a Star Wars movie comes out, the next movie is in the baby stages, and you hear rumors that turn out not to be true and some that do… Anyway, this is sort of the fun part!!!
People from all over the world are looking at this poster & I can’t help but think: “I’m not the only one, staring at the sun.”
solar is a way better album title than all that you can’t leave behind
this is ridiculous. but it does look cool.
oh, i just thought o fsomething… since we’re in that speculating too far in advance/rumours too good to be true mode. if the folllowing tour is based on the “solar” theme, how about an in-the-round version of a u2 concert stage. with maybe two or four ramps extending from a circular disc-type stage. nice, huh?
… with fans inside the disc. of course, this comes from the idea of solar, or sun. maybe the colors of the tour could be yellow or orange. bono will wear new orange goggle-type glasses… maybe the edge will have a sun-shaped hat. and, of course, they’ll have to play electric co. and gloria.
and lady with the spinning head. and always forever now. and, of course, so cruel.
I’m an advertising copywriter. My wife is head of graphic design at a large American firm. I was also at the Four5One seminar in Cleveland over the weekend and talked with Steve Averill about their upcoming design work. This is a fake. And not a good one. It’s twenty minutes of work with a stock NASA image, a font that comes with the computer, a logo scanned off a CD
Too bad if this is a hoax, I really, really like the title…SOLAR..Soooo much better that All That You Can’t Leave Behind. Solar is simple, bright and rock’n’rollish :o)
Does fit on a t-shirt, as far as I know that’s the critterium, so why not go for it!
Hm.. I found the leaked info from Columbia pretty plausible, but now Interference gets the further scoop, I can’t help but be doubting it all all of a sudden. A simple search on nasa.org and you can find similar pictures of the sun as on the promo, like http://science.msfc.nasa.gov/ssl/pad/solar/images/yohkoh_920508.jpg – take a picture and photoshop for an hour.. see what you can come up with.
Adding that U2 have a habit of putting their faces on any possible gizmo they can get their faces on, and this promo item does not, I am putting my money on a nice effort by Elvis to cause a buzz. The Interscope logo? Copy/Pasta. Nice work though, Joel, but fool me once…. 🙂
Oh, and yes, it’a waaaayyy to early for any promotion. Even with Pop, the earliest promotion was 2 or 3 months before the release of Discotheque.
ryan: you’re absolutely right. this IS the fun part. 🙂
Hey reno, thanks for thinking i could create such a buzz. lol. but i’ve gotta tell ya, i’m not that bored to create a poster. i got the poster pics from the exact same person that sent the email to interference and to u2log. have von b check the IP of the email – i did.
Glad ye feel yer ego stroked, Joel. I didn’t know you checked u2log, let alone 30+ reactions. Feathery birds of a kind probably have done the job for you. Prove me wrong 😉 and that’s the last of it from me.
Here’s my five-minute effort on an album cover based on the so-called poster “design.” Print it out, put it in a CD case, take a picture, and bingo: instant rumor.
reno, first off.. i was being sarcastic. 2nd… if i could prove where this came from, or didnt come from, we wouldnt have labeled it as rumor. perhaps you should take a moment to actually read what we posted about the images. no matter, we’re making no fALSE CLAIMS, JUST PRESENTING IT AS IT WAS GIVEN TO US – THE ONLY THING WE’RE HOLDING BACK IS THE REAL NAME OF THE PERSON WHO GAVE IT TO US, AS REQUESTED. PERHAPS YOU NEED TO FIND ANOTHER TREE. 😉
and one more comment.. reno: why wouldnt I read u2log? they obviously read interference as well. besides, its one of the better u2 sites on the net.
fuck all the thing!
NEW @U2 TALKING ‘BOUT OUR GENERATION

A U2 fan who wishes to remain anonymous spent time with Bono recently in Dublin after visiting the Hanover studios. The fan tells @U2 that, according to Bono, the new album should be out around January, 2004, with a tour to follow in the summer. Bono also mentioned one song by name, “All Because of You”, which he said is finished and will be on the album. As for the album, Bono said it will be full of guitars “like The Who.”
