What do you think of the winning entry? Would you have chosen another? If so, which one?
Dat’s gonna be one wild building.I would have gone for the 151 project. but then wtf do I know..??

Another interesting fact Felim Dunne Partner in Bardon Dunne is a brother in law of Paul McGuinness (so says the Irish Times)

Dreadful. Dublin must really be in the swing now, becoming the latest victim of soulless money-grubbing developers who will ruin the quayside like they’ve ruined so many other waterfront areas around the world. What kind of music do U2 think they’re going to make in this thing? Environment is a big part of the equation. Like gettin’ down in a conference room. And if God had meant for people to function hundreds of feet above ground level, he would have filled them with helium…

I really miss that big round reservoir that used to be there. Oh Dublin, what’s become of you. Trendier than thou, EU-padded stag-night central. Once a safe haven away from the Continent, now a trip to Euro-hell.
I still love ya.

If they really want the thing to become a landmark, why not build it in the shape of a giant lemon? Or, for that matter a great yellow Arc (popmart style). I don’t know, maybe it is not such a good idea anymore, to build high towers… What happened to good old-fashioned modesty??

I just don’t think this looks safe…

I’ve heard U2 are going to wait for this to be built, then finish recording their new album there. Can’t wait for 2008!

Geez, I didn’t really like the winning design… until I saw all the other entries. Architects must have access to some really amazing drugs.

Not bad design but looks like it might topple if strong winds were blowing at it.. hell what do I know, I’m just an electrical engineer…

It did seem the most imaginative design of the lot. I was particularly disappointed with the Dutch entry which looked like it had been custom designed for the city of Amsterdam. It makes no sense in Dublin at all.

Within a year we are able to SEE what time they really spend at recording an album!
Imagine the scene: hundreds of U2 fans watching from the other side of the quay through scopes to catch a glimpse of Edge’s new hat!

I think that the committee picked the best design. The shape reminds me of a lighthouse, which is a symbol of inspiration and a fitting structure along the water.

Ya…it’s definitely better than the other 2 plans just in overall design.

It’s spectacular. I fully plan on buying one of the apartments in the building, so that in the wee hours I can go upstairs, knock on the studio door, and tell the boys to turn up the music. =)

I see that new U2 album Solar will be released at January 6th of the next year. This is correct?
Solar must have a sun on their cover…

the twisting, light nature of this building reminds me of one of the losers in the competition to redesign the WTC site in NYC. That architect used the twists to remind us of the destruction that had mangled the surrounding, surviving buildings after the attack. The new studio building looks like it will be much less traumatizing on the eye, but reminds me of terror, all the same.

You know I have to agree with Paige there…this is a fecking monument not something to live or work in much less make music. It would be better suited as an office, in fact I wouldn’t be surprised if principle moved in the band took over their place. But it does make me wonder what the band has up it’s sleeves. The rush to release the second best of is pretty suspicious considering that well isn’t their contract with Island over after the next album?

Secondly, no one will want to spray paint “I was here” on that tower, which is a plus.

cheers from derry! i will def. take a good look at the docks when i’m in dublin again in the next few days, they certainly won’t look the same. it’s true that dublin got HUGE through all the fuzz of the last couple of years, so many people ther, incredible, so loud, so full of too much of everything. only HQ was pretty quiet. i enjoyed a few cigarettes there, left edge a message and had a guinnes a the ocean ( i think that’s what it’s called…the bar across the canal…) and also, i can’t help but still loving this city…almost a bit too much. cheers.

oh…and i think those studios won’t be quite as *unspectacular* as HQ and windmill lane (ringsend road) would be. it’s really hard to notice esp. windmill lane anyway, if you don’t know it you’d miss it.
