U2 to play Phoenix Park in 2004?

U2 are said to be lining up to play to an audience of 200,000 at Phoenix Park in Dublin in August 2004, says The Mirror. The paper quotes a ‘source close to the group’: “They will perform two nights at Phoenix Park in front of 100,000 fans on each occasion.” (via U2world.com)

Update: MCD denies the rumour in the Irish Indepedent. The band’s name did come up in initial discussions.

  1. What’s audience gathered record for watching a one band rock concert?
I think I once heard the Beatles at Brazil (100,000), but *shrug*

  3. I think the Monsters of Rock thing in Moscow 1991 or 2 with AC/DC and Metallica was something around 750,000 to a million… Also was a VERY violent and scary show, lots of rapes and beatings… Come to think of it, certainly U2 would go over like gangbusters there, Lil, but maybe it’s hard for them legally (like powers that be are apprehensive about large rock shows)??? Just one idea… I think Monsters of Rock was one of the first major western rock shows in Russia…
BTW, I haven’t posted in forever, so hello again, it’s still the best site going… Well, this and http://www.boners.com (it’s not what you think… or maybe it is)…

  5. Ryan, I don’t think that “powers that be are apprehensive about large rock shows”
because a lot of great rock bands played in russia. Some “stadium bands” like Bon Jovi and Rolling Stones have been here in Moscow. But not U2. :((((

  7. I guess I had only heard about Monsters of Rock because of all the bad things that happened, but, the riots get press the good normal shows don’t… That was my only guess as to why U2 haven’t played there though…

  9. Cool, send a ticket this way and we’ll talk. Come on,… did U2 really up an forget about their source of inspiration for the past few albums. The faith has never died so let’s continue the friendship. Would love to hear some first hand accounts on all that has happened since we last met. Mofo has sent many messages, a reply would be greatly appreciated.
