The Edge and Bono both appeared on RTE’s Late Late Show’s Tribute to Jim Sheridan presented by Pat Kenny on Friday evening.
Bono revealed the band had been working in London on using string sections for three on three tracks but had to bin it because ‘the songs were crap’. The Edge said they would have to start from scratch to rework them. (quotes paraphrased from memory)
After being interviewed by Kenny, they were joined by Daniel Lanois to perform Falling at your feet.
Earlier in the day, Bono appeared on ArtZone on Lyric FM, RTE, in a taped interview (windows media) in which he talks very briefly about Peter and the Wolf and the sadness involved in drawing the pictures. There’s also an interview at USA Today. Check the right hand column for an additional real audio excerpt.
start from scratch?!?
start from scratch?!?
Not that big of a deal, lucy. you know that they tend to produce a couple of dozen songs per album. only a dozen or so ever make the final cut anyway. the rest go on the singles as b-sides or on special releases like the best of albums. can’t say i’m really surprised that 3 songs were scrapped. they’ve probably got more than enough finished material for two albums already. =)

Use of string sections on a ‘rock’ record? So much for that rumor.

“Rock” is a misused term these days. You go to the Rock and Roll hall of fame and they have the motown groups being hailed as “rock stars”. Who knows what rock and roll means to U2…it seems it changes every 5 years. Strings in rock music….listen to Achtung Baby.

Johnny B Good, Good Lovin’, Get Ready…Motown was the first stages for R&R and R&B, and yes, even pop. The Halln has to include Motown, Elvis, Billie Holiday Chuck Berry etc.
As for Strings…Not my favorite type of U2 music…all you need to say for a positive about strings is…”All I Want is You”

yeah achtung baby proves that strings can be done the right way with u2 songs. if anything this proves that “rock” for U2 doesn’t mean a 3-piece banging it out together and alone. which is fine with me.

They’ve used strings before. They’ll use strings again, and with phenomenal results. Kite. Its sad people think that because there might be violins that its not gonna rock. Kashmir?

I was gonna say something about John Paul Jones and Led Zep but then I realised I didn’t know enough about him to make the usual bold statement. But uh, isn’t he known for string arrangements?

Even in today’s new climate of “rock” or what passes as such, dare we need to mention Evanescence as the basis of strings in rock?? Or should I say in their case” yawn rock.” If U2’s new record retains any of the pulse of Electrical Storm, a dash of the punkness of their Ramones cover, and the sensibility of writing we saw on Achtung, ATYCLB and even War in its subtle political skew, we should have a very worthy record from our favorite band. Best? Well, we have a long way to go before that can be determined.

let’s all just be thankful they’re bringing Lanois in for an outside listen. If anything, he’ll make sure a few of the songs the band may seem stuck on become Top Ten hits. He has that gift.
