  1. It sounds like the band had a wakeup call with those three songs sounding poorly. I can only imagine they will now pay much attention to the album since time is tickin…

  3. strings aren’t bad if they are in a few songs. it makes them pretty. as long as the whole album isn’t total fluff.

  5. I like the way some people use just a little slice or note of a stringed orchestra in their mixes…just enough to give it some depth of feeling, if needed.

  7. The end of All I want is you and the start of Who’s Gonna Ride are examples of beautiful string arrangements in past U2 works.

  9. Coldplay used strings to huge efect on their last album. It’s so subtle but is key for the moementum and emotion in some of the songs.

  11. i’m not meaning to bash strings in general (van dyke parks strings at end of all i want is you is a favorite of mine, too), but reports are that it didn’t work out this time….so i’m picturing in my mind the spinal tap moments of u2 standing before a reported “lavish” 50 piece orchestra…a la Aerosmith?
lanois is in town now to listen and give feedback, it’s a work in progress…relax:-)

  13. Ok…Ok….I know U2 have used strings to great effect before, but was it actually an orchestra on UF or was that “synthesized”…same for “so cruel”? Nothing says overblown rock star like an orchestra. (except maybe painting) Come on down from the ivory tower…

  15. ok, I guess i’m the only one that sees anything funny about u2 working with a 50 piece orchestra, even when they themselves freely admit it didn’t work out. Back to my ivory tower dreaming of electric guitars and pounding drumbeats…

  17. Uh…”War” anyone? Lillywhite practically intro’d the boys to strings on some levels. When it’s mixed or arranged badly, strings are a detriment. When they’re not even noticeable in a track or float so just above, they’ve been done right.

  19. u2 with strings added by lillywhite/eno/lanois/parks good.
u2 sharing stage with lavish 50 piece orchestra, not good.
u2 is plenty pretentious (in a good way) without heading into “use your illusion” territory. A little orchestra goes a long way.
    Band is good!

  21. there’s strings in lots of songs! just because we now know that it’s done with a 50-piece orchestra doesn’t make it suddenly bad.

  23. we know they scrapped these three orchestra songs and said themselves that the songs were “shite”. As far as I know, besides “Two Shots” (one-off) and passengers live (one-off), this is the first time u2 has actually worked directly with an orchestra. We also know Lanois is in town, U2 is looking for direction, and I’d like to recommend more rocking than waltzing. i know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me electric guitar and Edge driven production or give me liberty, whatever.

  25. I really think Edge is about a lot more than electric guitar. Why would you think The Edge drive production would mean ‘more guitar’? He’s not Steve Vai.

  27. I agree….edge is about a lot more than electric guitar, he is a master of atmosphere and he’s much tastier than Steve Vai. Edge is awesome in whatever he does, but conducting an orchestra for a u2 album? Bono’s been talking (I know, I know) about Edge being angry and doing unreal things with the guitar, and that’s what I’m hoping for… I readily admit that u2 can do great things with strings, but it’s not what I expected from Chris Thomas. And it looks like u2 wasn’t happy with the results, either….they panned the idea of the orchestra (at least for those songs) and are bringing in Danny. Sounds like a key phase is happening for the new album, and I just want to put my 2 cents in: I prefer guitars to strings. (Edge driven production to me does not mean guitar necessarily, just that he’s the “man” in the studio and it is after all his main instrument). I love most every U2 song, but i can still sit back and see the humor in a failed attempt with the orchestra. Silly me!
