Tour Deadlock

Is there dissension among the band regarding the format of the next tour? According to a spy for The Mirror, Bono and Larry want to do a stadium tour, whereas Adam and Edge feel an arena tour would be better. The spy told the tabloid, “Bono reckons they should stick to the stadiums playing to 70,000 people a night.”

  1. I don’t care about the format:
Elevation was great, but what about zoo tv? That sure was great too. Anyway, it’s the Mirror we’re talking about here, so I don’t think there’s a real problem.

  3. mixing it up would be great. everyone can get a bit of what they want. The Stones did that with their last tour mixing club dates with arenas and stadiums – and it seemed to work well there.

  5. What about arenas in the U.S. and stadiums in Europe. That way it would be sell outs in both continents. For myself, i would prefer stadiums, they bring back great memories

  7. It does not matter which format they choose. I will be there. 🙂 I do, however, prefer a roof over my head and not sloshing around in rain and mud.

  9. They would be wise to do primarily arenas with a few stadium dates for the larger cities. I’m not sure the band can justify an all-stadium tour like Popmart again. Is the support there for one?

  11. Actually, it’s fiscally very unwise to do both arenas and stadia on the same leg of a tour, but a very effective marketing move to start leg one in the arenas and move leg two (on the same continent) into stadia.

  13. Hey they are supposed to be the biggest band in the world and the best stadium act around. If the new album is as great as ATYCLB then play the stadiums because they will be filled. If they put out another bomb like Pop then stay in the arena and don’t embarass themselves playing to half empty stadiums again

  15. The Rolling Stones are probably the only group on the planet who can guarantee a full house for a Stadium Tour and for that reason I would intially go with Arenas. “IF” the new album does really well then consider Stadiums ala ZooTv Tour.

  17. The way things are shaping up (Album in May, tour in Summer) tix will go on sale before the LP hits, which means a stadium tour will be a disaster.

  19. I prefer arenas, but the Slane DVD sure makes outdoor gigs look good. For smaller markets, arenas are the only way to go, no band in the world can fill stadiums anywhere near me (Wilmington, NC, USA). I’d give anything to see U2 in a club like Irving Plaza. I thought the way the Stones mixed all 3 (indoor/outdoor/clubs) was pretty cool. And I like the way REM has 70+ songs at the ready to play on any given night on their new tour. So, for the next U2 tour, I’ll take the club dates where they play 20+ songs they’ve never or rarely played live. I can dream out loud on u2log!

  21. U2’s music connects with the heart and soul… and thats so much easier to do when your notes aren’t bouncing into the sky and off metal rafters ouside…

  23. It is all about the arenas. Loved the Elevation set up. If they need to do larger venues due to demand, I wouldn’t mind seeing them in a stadium, Foxboro 97 was religious. But if they hit Montreal and play the Big O, I will be very upset. They played the best shows EVER at the Molson Centre (and the ACC in Toronto). Either way, I’m no more than a glorified messenger boy… I’ll be there.

  25. stadiums please…. U2 is one of the last and certainly at these concepts. If U2 ever calls it a day stadium shows will become more rare…let’s enjoy this while possible.

    This has to happen :)!!!

  27. I vote for arenas…I’ve said this before, but my observation from attending 4 arena shows and 4 stadium shows on the recent Springsteen tour is that you lose SO much intimacy in the translation to stadium – not so much with the band, because they can fill the space with sound, but with your fellow audience members.

I think they’ll start with arenas and end with stadiums in select cities. I hope they do a club promo tour again – never got to go but it was such a thrill to see the setlists and the band challenging themselves again.

Anyone else find it curious that Larry is on the stadium side?

  29. I don’t find it that curious that Larry would come out on the stadium side…if they just stuck with that it would mean either fewer gigs overall probably, or else spread out more, meaning less stress on his body from banging the drooms all night.

That said, I’m firmly in the Edge/Adam camp on this one!

  31. I have a 30′ x 68′ partially shaded backyard that backs up to a parking lot on the boarder of Chicago and Evanston, IL. I also have a variety of folding chairs, access to a picnic table and a new gas BBQ… should the band decide for a much more intimate venue…

  33. I personally hope for arenas again. I just loved the intimate feel. The heart was the greatest stage design ever! Never seen anything like it before or since. I hope for something similar to that. I feel so lost with stadium concerts. Yes, you still feel connected with the music but so with the band. I just feel lost in a sea of people with the stadiums.
The fact that this came from The Mirror I doubt its got any truth to it.
    <<<Keeps fingers crossed for arenas!

  35. I am with Lance. I live on the north side of Chi-town also. A short drive for me. I will bring the hot dogs for that grill.

  37. funny, there’s 26 commments and this was posted in … The Mirror!

I guess I would prefer arena because I hate big crowds but I really don’t care. As long as I get to hear the tunes, I’m happy.

  39. It doesn’t much matter to me because you can always get ‘intimate’ or ‘outimate’ with U2 in any venue. So what if the guys are the size of peas as long as you are close enough to get that holosonics light to blast onto the last eardrum that still functions well. My yard is 10 x as big as Lance’s and I serve homemade beer!

  43. i say if the tour starts in fall, then stay away from stadiums. i think their outdoor concerts rock but a big problem for popmart was playing in football stadiums in fall and winter. it’s not that people won’t pay 50bucks for a concert (50bucks in ny barely buys your a drink and a cab ride) but who wants to be out in the cold? warm summer rain maybe…

i say arena first leg, stadium spring tour second leg…then play for japanese fans (along with a cd with a japanese only bonus track).

on a random note, the best part about the slane video is that the quality doesn’t look at polished as boston. that’s the very same reason i love my zoo tv tape from sydney. it really looks and feels like a concert…oh yeah and boat loads of people hopping up and down from the intro of elevation through the very end helps too…

prediction: the tour will start in florida, like they always do, with the first few shows be not as tight, just like people always say they are…

  45. All you need now is a black Gibson ES-175 with a sticker that reads…I FEEL GOOD! I wonder what happened to that guitar. I want it.

  47. I’m hoping for a big stadium tour with a big giant tomato. This time, Bono will show that he is in fact super human and fly above the crowd against the backdrop of stars as he belts out all our favorites. At the final show in Dublin he will float up into the heavens as the Almighty announces “It is finished!”

  49. speaking of almighty…can not u2 request anything they want to be built for them…a la lemon…so why don’t they really go for broke on this next tour and ask for a whole venue to be portable…it could pop up anywhere! cotton fields…malls…parking lots…airports…someone’s estate etc. if carnivals can do it u2 can!

  51. Well….If they plan using the new holsonics technology…it will have to be arenas. From what Ive read about it, it wouldnt work well outside.

  55. its got to be outdoors, where U2’s music is heard at its best!

who cares about the rain and cold, if any; at playing outdoors they reign supreme. Nothing beats sharing the magic with 25,000-80,000 poeple.

    deano!!!

  57. Have to go with arenas on this…especially with the holosonic talk…that tech really sounds exciting. Just as the Beatles redefined the concept of albums in the 60’s U2 have redefined the concept of the live show over the last decade. Go!
