In the January issue of Uncut magazine, Bono mimics Nigel Tufnel, describing U2’s new songs as “raw rock ‘n’ roll” dominated by guitars that go up to “Number 11” [reference explained in this QuickTime at Spinaltap.com].
In the Uncut interview, Bono explains why the band chose to work with producer Chris Thomas, describes the band’s method of recording this time around, and praises Edge’s guitar work on the new songs: “When you’ve got as much spleen and suffused rage as The Edge has, I think Number 11 was the only way to go.”
Elsewhere in the same issue, Bono chats with Karl Hyde of Underworld. The topic of their conversation ranges from haircuts and lip gloss to art and literature.
Sounds GREAT to me! Bono is very careful with his criticism of Eno, and he’s right on the mark. Let _the man_ play the guitar! The anticipation is creeping up my spine, these are good vibes. I gotta get one of them amps that goes to 11, that’s f’ing brilliant.

Bono criticizes Eno? Really? What does he say about him?

“They…..um, they don’t really like the loud music. Heh heh! Eno’s not on it, but Daniel’s coming in to play” I guess that’s criticism 😉 Also he said of Chris Thomas, “But we particularly wanted him to work on the guitar sound.” I took this to infer “because Eno wouldn’t”. But Bono didn’t say that, in fact he said “I’d love Brian to be on it” My fav quote “raw rock’n’roll….a band in its primary colours of guitar, bass, drums, voice and a lot of vitality and energy”

Jan 17th??? Very interesting… Is that the day we all finally break into the studio, mug The Edge, hold Adam and Larry at gunpoint, tie Paul McGuiness up and throw him into the trunk of out getaway vehicle, and slip B some red wine, and when everybody is gone leave a ransom note for Paul and, uh, wait…
Maybe we should just wait for the album to actually come out…
NAAHHH!!! Who can wait that long???

U2 and Underworld seem to be working together on some level. I caught an interview with Carl Hyde on TV recently, during which he said some work for U2 is in the pipeline for them, but he couldn’t be specific. I assume U2 asked them to do some remixes.

BTW, Jan. 17 was a joke… I know nothing, although if someone was taking odds, I’d put 50 cents down on that date. (g)

Oh, nuts, popartist, I thought you were one of “Edge’s cousins,” who know all sorts of inside info! It’s amazing; that man has 10,000 cousins, and they spend 20 hours a day on the Internet telling people…they are Edge’s cousins! Ryan, what makes you think we’ll find Bono in the studio when we storm the place??? (I couldn’t resist that!)I wouldn’t be surprised if this album follows the same release pattern as ATYCLB — when was the first sign of life we saw then? End of Jan, beginning of Feb?

With ATYCLB Bono was throwing all kind’s of song titles around towards the release. With the exception of Full Metal Jacket all we are hearing lately is Edge’s guitar and the sound of the album. For my money if the sound of the album falls somewhere in between The Fly and Gone it’s going to be a mofo! I think they should also take the last part of the liver version of LNOE and do something with that…talk about rawking. Good night

“liver” should have been live version 🙂

Think this is more on the Pop timetable, Paige. I think this will be fairly close to the Pop timetable except for the tour (they’ve learned their lesson!) IIRC, Discotheque leaked around December 31 (my b-day present 😉 ), but then I think the first single for this album is going to a couple of weeks later than Disco. The boys emerged in early February for the K-Mart press con. 🙂

Hopefully, I can get all the songs off of the internet and won’t have to buy the album for another year or two (when they’re discounted), like the last time!!! *evil grin*

Off topic, but since there weren’t comments available for the luciano post, i just wanted to say that the edge looks, as bono would put it, f*@&ck’n brilliant without a hat…oh, and the new album better not be ATYCLB pt. 2 or else i am definitely leaving it behind this time…for a few days anyways. hehe

I think next U2 album will be the most heavy.
I think the “best of” version of GONE could be a possible direction..

yes yes yes. but is there a transcript somewhere?

Gone from the best off doesn’t cut it for me..well its better than the album version but the song itself isn’t up too scratch…..it suffers from as bono puts it.. “the curse of mid tempo” – it needed to be faster.. i am also not in favour the production .. bono’s vocals in a sonmg like this should not be so upfront in the mixing.. .. what i can see in the new album is edges guitar taking the front in the mixing department… with heavy riffs… with piano cords in the back..with bono singing opperetic style.. picture…silverchairs Without you.. with coldplays clocks…with the hands that built america…with boxies rebel rebel…!

As much as I like Coldplay…I say leave that influence out. I know U2 has something original coming our way.

I certainly hope not. There is way too much hip hop out there as it is. U2 doesn’t need to jump on the ‘hip hop’ beat bandwagon. They are always ahead of the curve. Not doing what every other crap band is doing. Right now, every band that wants some air-play has to start making their music sound like hip-hop. To hell with that! U2 will get air-play and they will stick out like a sore thumb with all the other radio drek.

while it’s obviously not their song, i would probably look towards “beat on the brat” as an example of that rawer guitar sound. it still sounds like U2, but it’s got an energy and a vitality that none of the songs off of ATYCLB had. i’d be happy if some of the songs we’re a little ‘punker’ in spirit.

They’d better not turn hip-hop! They’ll make total fools of themselves if they do. And, like someone already said, I hope it’s not full of rage. I can see it now: they go in a heavy metal direction, fail horribly, think “What were we thinking?!,” get frustrated, change their image again…

I don’t think there’s any risk of U2 going “heavy metal.” There’s always being an ethereal quality to thier music, no matter what era of their career. I think vonb was the one who said some time ago, “I’m sure it’ll end up sounding just like a U2 record.” yep. They do what they do, and they do it the best.

They also do what they don’t, ie surprise us with new sounds and directions (see UF, AB, Passengers). Aren’t they great?
