Someone Tells Him No

According to the New York Daily News, Bono asked the National Football League (NFL) if he could perform “An American Prayer” at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show and was declined. The NFL’s response was the show “is for entertainment, not for flogging worthy causes,” referring to Bono’s campaign to raise awareness of the African AIDS crisis.

The NFL has, however, not completely turned its back to Bono. Some football players will accompany him when he makes a return visit to Africa this spring.

  1. It’s for the best, I suppose. The Super Bowl is a celebration and I don’t think it’s the time or the place for something like that. It would put a bitter note in the whole thing.
Besides, no one should be subjected to seeing Bono and J-lo singing together. The thought is enough to make anyone toss their nachos. Yuck.

  5. Does sound a little fishy. Excluding tours, Bono doesn’t ask to play places, people ask him to play. Although, who really knows with the Daily News.

  9. Well, if it is true, I’m glad for it — “American Prayer” is, err… well, it’s no “Hey Jude,” is it? Honestly, if he’d gotten up in front of an audience of 300 million and sung that song, he’d’ve embarassed himself. IMHO of course. Maybe there’s a sick Neptunes remix or something now…

  11. Probably a hoax, but if not that’s the price you pay for wearing your heart on your sleeve & trying to sway an “Entertainment Driven” Nation to develop a conscience.

  13. I’m surprised everyone is so vehement about this being a hoax — this isn’t even in the running for the most absurd U2 news item we’ve seen recently! It could very well be true — I could see Bono asking; I think he let himself get carried away with the level of emotion shown at the U2 Superbowl show, I think he believes the American mainstream is always that passionate about things that matter, when in reality, they were still just confused and scared stupid from 9/11. I think he thought he could reach a mass audience of mainstreamers in the same way this time around. But I will say this: whether this story is true or not, Beyonce is singing the National Anthem, and make no mistake, I like her, but if she wants to parade around Bono at things like the concert last December, wearing “native outfits” designed by her mother and celebrating her African roots, then let her wear a T-shirt with a statistic on it or http://www.data.org or something while she’s singing the anthem, I’d like for once to see some of these people who attach themselves to Bono stick their necks out personally like he does, if they share his concern and his purpose. If the T-shirt is tight enough, she’ll get even the most drunken yahoo’s attention….I just hope she puts the message on the abdomen part so it’s legible…

  15. I think everyone is calling hoax because ever since U2 played the Super Bowl there have been all these wacky stories supposedly coming from the NFL (which I think have been first propagated mostly by the NY Daily News) about Bono and/or U2 participating in this NFL thing or that, none of them turning out to be true. The Daily News is not a bad paper, but I think there’s an NFL guy who knows someone at that paper and tells them tales… (g)

  17. I have some words of wisdom from someone in which describes the authenticity of this article

Dr. Phil’s Words of Wisdom: “What a Complete and Udder Load of Crap!”

I find this as a hoax

  19. I think there is a possibility of it not being a hoax because beyonce is doing the half time show from what I gathered. I would make sense for him to want to do American Prayer with her.

  21. Yo Pop Artist – A reporter at the daily news was snubbed from the Irving plaza gig in 2000 (or 01?) and had to review the simulcast from a clock radio. She clawed it to bits. I bet she’s the one….

  23. Newsflash!! According to the New York Daily News, Bono asked the NFL if he could be ‘an American Player’ on one of the teams at this years Super Bowl AND WAS DECLINED!!! After the roars of hysterical laughter had died down, the NFL’s response was the event is for ‘serious sportsmen, not for flogging short irish superstars’, referring to Bono’s lack of height. The NFL has however not completely turned its back on Bono. Some footballplayers promised not to stand directly next to him in fotoshoots, when they accompany him to Africa this spring.
