  1. Ultra Violet (Light My Way) would have been a huge massive hit. I wonder if they didn’t release it as a single because Bono accidentally stole the line “there is a silence that comes to a house where no one can sleep” from some book he read. They could have just edited that line out though.

Gone and Kite also would have been massive hits. I think if Gone had been the first single off Pop, it wouldn’t be perceived to have been a failure by most people. Discotheque was just too weird for most people.

  3. They SHOULD have released ‘Wire” from the Unforgetable Fire LP.
I never had heard (or since) heard a song that resembled it. It has a driving beat. It has an amazing hook and chorus. A classic. It should be played LIVE on this new tour. I think it would bring down the house!!! Then release the live track as a B-side!

  5. They should have released “Discotheque”(Hexidecimal Mix) as the first single from POP. The Hexicdecimal version tops the album version, in my opinion. Although I do like the original album versions of “Please” and “Last Night On Earth” over the remixed versions.

  7. “Peace on earth” from the album ATYCLB because it’s a great song and has to do with the state of the world right now.

  9. Love is Blindness. Because it’s one of the most beautiful songs ever written. And it brings back sweet memories of the endings of Zooropashows, Bono still in his MacPhisto-suit with faded make up, me and friends totally exhausted from queue-ing outside all day. I think I was actually in tears once or twice.

  11. I think U2 should have released “In A Little While” as a single and I am shocked that they didn’t because it is the most easily accesible song they have ever written. It has a quality of immediacy in the sense that you feel it is being written as you listen to it; in much the same way that all the great Beatles tunes have. All I can say is that my 6 year old sister and my 94 year old grandmother find it to be their favorite U2 song; now that’s broad appeal.

  13. i was just listening to “ultraviolet” last evening and thinking to myself why did that song fall out of favor with the band so quickly.

I think the band should have cleaned up “mothers of the dissapeared” and released is as a single. it’s a gorgeous song that really shines when played live. the album version just doesn’t cut it.

  15. I entered my vote for Gone—real hidden gem of a song & mostly because its one of the strongest songs on that record—& it wasn’t a single! Long thought that they did not put forth the best songs for singles. Would have rather seen Mofo as the lead off single than Discotheque.

Would have also gone for more ATYCLB songs—nearly every song on that record sounded like a single, would have voted for Kite, In A Little While & Wild Honey.

Ditto to So Cruel (maybe my favourite song off of AB) Ultraviolet & Until the End of the World.

  17. I vote for “in a litte while” just the most remarkable song with clear distinctive pop-radio appeal. Easy to listen to, easy to sing to, fun atmosphere…. Also, u2 should never have remixed those pop tunes for the “best of”…. they took raw electric experiments and poured mold on them. Sucked them up bad! Ya!

  19. ditto for me on ultraviolet and so cruel..both awesome songs with a mass appeal..was surprised they weren’t on the b-sides of the best of 1990-2000..go figure 🙂

  21. Red hill mining town remains my favorite non single song, so I’m going with that!!! Plus there’s a video for it no one has seen, so they were half way to making it a single before they changed their minds… Here’s some U2 trivia, does anyone remember why it wasn’t released after all???

  23. Ooh, you people are good, Red Hill Mining Town, Ultraviolet and especially So Cruel, that is one of the most painfully beautiful songs ever written, I’ll be damned if I know why Axl didn’t cry over that one…but for my two cents, and yes, I know this is a little skewed, but I’m going to say it anyway, I wish they had released as a single or at least included on the comp album, the version of Stay off the Far Away, So Close soundtrack. When I first got that and put it on, I was totally unprepared for that Larry beginning, and then the guitars coming in like that, it blew me away. No matter how rotten or empty I feel, I put that on and it gets right to me, in fact, it’s part of my living will. If I’m ever on life support and they don’t know what to do, I have a short list of what to play and that’s on it — if I don’t react, then pull the plug, baby, because I am in a far, far better world than this, talking to Keith Moon….

  25. “Daddy’s Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car’ should have been the lead single from Zooropa because it has the great fanfare opening, delicious backwards bass loops from MC 900 Foot Jesus, loud industrial drum beats, and most importantly, at the core it is a simple blues song. It can be played live with all the weirdness or stripped down and played on acoustic guitar. And the melody is so simple it wouldn’t wear out Bono’s voice. As a single stacked up against “Numb” it seems to fit in better as a transition from Achtung to Zooropa; Numb seemed too weird at first blush, as if U2 were trying to do rap and it came out as a monotone mumble. Better to kick it wiht a rocking tune says I.

  27. hey jocutus, now you mention it, hard to go past daddy’s… but whaddabout “bad”, because almost nothing beats it live.

  29. paige, I agree with you about Stay…Plus Bono sounds great on the high notes. I still have no idea why Gone was never released. Off subject but did I see where Bono was going to be on Virgin Radio this Sunday? I wonder if he has a new single with him to play….

  31. Electric Co off Boy.

    Rejoice from October.

A Sort of Homecoming off Unforgettable Fire.

    Ultra Violet off Achtung Baby

They released all the right singles from Rattle & Hum though…
