We know you’re wary of false idols in these lean times. But U2log.com has some authentic, honest-to-goodness scoops for you: can you say “working song titles”? We’re not at liberty to name our industry sources, but we can vouch for their accuracy. These titles are subject to change, so they could easily be different in their official release. Omnia mutantur and all that.

What we know:

“Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own”… is a version of the song Bono sang at his father’s funeral in 2001. This one you probably knew; it’s been buzzed about since 2001 — note, however, one source suggests it’s “Can”, not “Can’t”.
“Sky Hawk”… was described to us as “epic, highbrow rock,” and is intended for the soundtrack to a major 2004 superhero film — and therefore, could end up as the first song to reach the public.
“Love And Peace Or Else”… is reportedly “bluesy.”
“Jahweh”… is a title that, you may recall, we slipped to you a while back. One source made a case for it as “one of the greatest songs U2 have ever recorded.” Make of that what you will…

Our sources also indicated that the band’s claims that the album is a massive rocker are not hot air — they seemed extremely impressed by what they’ve come in contact with. What we know, you now know too. Can it tide you over?

  1. Hey U2loggers….Thanks!
So what super hero has a film coming out in the next 60-90 days?

Also Jahweh is actually scrambled, it is supposed to be ahhjew…also known as a hebrewnic sneeze…

  3. I hereby nominate Jahweh for about 8 Grammy’s. Shame I didn’t here the song yet but it’s bound to rock…

  7. WHAT’S THE ALBUM TITLE??!!

Instead of something like “Solar”, it’ll probably be “Sometimes You Feel Like You Can’t Go On But Then You Realize You Really Can Go On And Then You’re Glad You Did, Hallelujah”.

How about, “If You Don’t Stop All These Globetrotting Trips, We’re Kickin’ You Out Of The Band ‘Cause Lanois’ Voice Is Better Than Yours Anyway?!”

    Or simply, “Smokal Chords”?

  9. There’s also Van Helsing with Hugh Jackman, but Spidey 2 seems the obvious one to me… Van Helsing looks pretty dark… I saw a notice at my local Hasting’s (books, movies, half assed attempt at a music section “superstore”) than showed a picture of Flood, The Edge, and Adam at a mixing board ( Zooropa, I presume?) that said U2: New Album EARLY 2004… I think this is the closest to a rumored release they’ve gone without a peep of official word from HQ… What I’m trying to say as politely as possible is, WHEN THE HELL IS THE ALBUM COMING OUT!?!?!?

  11. What about that new Pixar movie?? The one about the superhero? Or the one with Angelina Jolie in it — the one where they are a band of sky pirates and robots taking over and the only people who can stop them are a group of pilots…go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/trailers to see the movies I am talking about. They seem MORE likely to have a U2 song than spiderman 2. Why? Spiderman–spider…pilots–hawks…superhero that ain’t a spider— you get the picture

  13. Ooh, if these sources are so highly placed, can they tell us the name and gender of Larry’s third child? Kid’s just turning three, and still, no one seems to know! Love and Peace Or Else…brilliant! This is going to be what we all need, I can feel it. Thank you U2 Log for the scoop on Solar…OOPS!

  15. Nice scoops 🙂 but I hope the real names have some more “coolishness” because this all sounds a bit dull, non-rocking, atyclb copy. But, I won’t judge rumours, I’ll just wait until the album finally comes out 🙂

  17. Ben, I would be suprprised if it resembled ATYCLB. The boys played it a little safe last time so I look for them to stray from the mainstream. God what a tough gig these guys have to satisfy all our musical tastes!:)

  19. I’m inclined to think Sky Hawk is destined for Sky Captain… as well…but as the second single. I don’t think it’s a good idea for the first single to be so closely associated with a movie and I see the film is slated for a Summer release so the timing would be good as single #2 around June or so.

  41. Oh this is such welcome news! A few thoughts that sprang to mind as I was reading this:

On “Sky Hawk” — the description “epic highbrow rock” makes me think of HMTMKMKM, which is one of the most rocking and underrated U2 songs.

“Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own” — and I do hope it’s “Can’t” rather than “Can” — could be along the thematic lines of “One” and “Kite” and could blow us all away.

Bono has been so much more into his faith through the Elevation Tour and then the DATA/Heart of America stuff — “Jahweh” could put the whole of CCM to shame.

The title “Love and Peace or Else” for some reason reminds me of “Trying to Throw Your Arms Around the World.” Can’t go wrong there.

  43. Jahweh, cool. Hey check out Jahweh.com, did the guys put this up? It is funny.

I am very excited by the new album, and it is beginning to make sense, May release, a few headliners at festivals in Europe over the summer, indoor shows in the states and Europe in the Fall, a wee trip to Aus and SA in Jan – Feb back to the States in April for Stadium tours then on to Europe for summer Stadium tours with the Climax at Pheonix Park Dublin, in front of 150,000 book your planes this train ain’t stopping.

    You think you’re so tough
You think you’ve got the stuff
You’re telling me and everyone you’re hard enough
You don’t have to put up a fight
You don’t have to always be right
Let me take some of the punches for you tonight

Hey jojo…did Bono have anything to say about how it’s going in the studio? Have they hit a wall? changed direction?….dare I ask, changed producers?
Any other insight besides Sept ’04?

Cheers everyone and Im anticipating as much as all!!!

  63. This is all a bit silly. Until the band officially puts out a statement regarding the album we can pretty much count everything else as rubbish. First we hear it’s going to be March then everyone knows someone (or a site) thay says it will be May…Now September. I am a betting man and I am betting the house on a Winter ’04/’05 release.

  65. Tentpole releases generally don’t come any later in the year than the end of October (witness the Oct. 31 release of ATYCLB, Outkast’s STANKONIA, and Jay-Z’s THE DYNASTY, all on the same day in 2000), although they pushed that trend this year with a couple of early-November releases, most notably Britney’s. As people have said before, U2 are obviously big fans of the Christmas sales period — they’ve had a product out at Christmastime every year now since 2000 (ATYCLB, the Boston DVD, BEST OF 90-00, Slane DVD).

So to me, September sounds extremely plausible — but no later. I really don’t think they can afford to let things slip into 2005, it’s just too long out of the public eye to be riding the “rejuvenated band” momentum they picked up in 2000. March is right out, promo would already be happening by now, and May seems pretty freakin’ ambitious too, unless the album’s completely recorded and is just waiting to be mastered, which we’ve had no indication of. So: I’m betting September, which I’m sure VonB will welcome with open arms. She might find time to squeeze in a quick nap before September. ;-D

  67. Whenever it comes out it will come out. I’m hoping The Edge is in the studio taking his time, because he’s rewriting the book on rock guitar. I’m betting on some experimental sounds.

  69. OK, if the release is in September, then I figured out the superhero film — Mr. Incredible, Disney, being released in 11/04. U2 putting a song on a Disney soundtrack — who’d expect it? That’s the point. Just hope The Bon’s next weave doesn’t look like Elton’s do! What I saw of the King Center photos made me a little woosy….

  71. Oh, another little factoid that tips the scales towards September: Grammy eligibility runs through September 30th. I don’t think they want to repeat the 2000/2001 split-eligibility thing again, so they’re gonna want the album out before the end of the Grammy year…

We (U2log) don’t have an inside pipeline on this one, honestly — we’re just as in the dark as you are. Personally, the September rumor makes the most sense to me, but who can say?

  79. U2 owes me a kick in the chops. ;^) U2 released 2 hours of live material in 2003. Early 1987=JT, late 1991=Achtung, early 1997=Pop, late 2000=Behind, late 2004 sounds about right for the next big studio album statement. Their albums tend to come out about a year after the first date you hear and late 2003 is the earliest I remember.

Big albums are released up to mid-November, tho it slipped into early December last year. I could see theirs slip to November, wouldn’t matter since a tour shouldn’t be until 2005. (Big albums were never released before March, but it started in late Feb. this year.) Split Grammy eligibility means more publicity and awards, but less of a haul when the publicity would help most. September releases help the label’s 3rd quarter books.

  83. I was in Dublin last week for work and there werent even good rumors floating. I would think that if an album/tour was weeks away, there would be lots of hub-bub, especially along the Liffey.

I was also betting on the fact that a March/April release would allow them to be touring during the US elections. And we all know how much the B-man enjoys that! :>

On the other hand, those of us hard core “punters” can save up more “hard-earned” for a tour down the road.

    Oh well.

  87. Sept for a single release and LAte Sept early Oct for the Album, that would match the last studio album.

Makes sense to me. Look out for small New York/ London type gigs to promote the gigs and I reckon a definite gig at Vicar street in Dublin around mid November. Dream on….

I respect the fact that they can do watherer they want with their career, but then so they could show a little more entusiasm on put new songs out, showing that they care about their fans a little more.

  93. ARGHHHH September now? I can’t take this no more its like torture! Anyways Although i am happy to see that Bono is taken his fame and putting it to good use by providing awareness of AIDS and trying to make this world a better place, I think he needs to STOP DOING THAT for this year and finish this album for once and for all! I remember hearing about this album probably in late 2002 that it would be out by mid 2003 will look ITS 2004!!!! I think Bono is doing a great job but he should put that aside when dealing with U2. Ultimatly what he is doing well end up breaking up the band and there is evidence of that going on now (ie The Edge getting very upset at Bono for not taking the time to tend to U2). Come on BONO get this album out before this decade is over! Ima getting old here!

  95. Sometimes I get so affraid. I don’t want U2 to become a comemorative band, like the Rolling Stones. I dont’t want U2 to become a cover band of U2. The last thing I want in the new album is a copy of ATYCLB or a collection of songs like “American Prayer”. They have said many things in the last 2 years. The Who! Punk Rock Made In Venus! Massive Rocker! New tunes from The Edge! And then Bono comes and sing “American Prayer” over a previously recorded base. Gimme a break!
