Book Peddlers

U2 is shopping for a publisher to produce a book about the band’s career. According to MTV, the proposed title of the U2 retrospective is In the Name of Love: U2 by U2 and its author might be Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum curator Jim Henke. The possible title by the possible author might possibly be published in 2005. Perhaps by then, we’ll have completed reading all the other U2-related titles in our libraries.

  1. Maybe this is to coincide with election to Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, and the upcoming album/tour?

  3. Well I think its to mark 25 years since they released boy their first studio album in 1980.

  5. U2–please, please, please don’t have lives. Please stop doing what you want and do what we want. We don’t give a damn about you at all. All we want is for you to make us happy.

Sorry but I’m so tired of the fecking crap about the fecking album.

  9. You won’t see any album soon. Mr. Liberal do gooder, Bono, is too busy buying million dollar homes around the world for his pleasure. The guy who is always bashing the US for not giving enough money to his causes certainly has plenty of cash to spare for his own pleasures. I am certain there are a lot of people who could benefit from that money. Of course, none of you sheep will tell Mr.Hypocrit to put his money where his mouth is.

  11. Hey Bono, please give $20,000 or so to all the charities that you can!! It’s not enough to go out and educate people on the problems of the world. Problems large countries like the US, the UK, and the countries in Europe have helped to create. Please dip into your personal account and pay for the mistakes that my and Kelly’s forefathers have made and ignored. Oh yeah, and finish the damn album too!!

    Is that better Kelly?

Oh yes, P.S. Bono, become a Conservative and then you won’t have to worry about the problems in the world. You can then just really worry about yourself, and your $$$.

  13. Well that went a litle bit off-topic, didn’t it!

I just hope that this book is better than the rubbish Unforgettable Fire book by Dunphy.

  17. Vonb, at least they visit your site…which is the whole point of its existence…to be visited/perused/editorialized…people need to see other viewpoints of U2 besides JUST YOURS. – Journalism 101
Dunphy’s book was written at a very important time when U2 didn’t have a tremendously blind cult following and they could still be themselves…and Bono’s dad was still alive to provide comment.

Our enjoyment of U2 in the world >>>>>1%
    Bono priceless.

  23. Perhaps the point should be made that there is a difference between opinion and informed opinion. To accuse Bono of hypocrisy is ludicrous, both emotionally and intellectually, and to suggest that the folks who stop by here are too stupid to recognize the difference between an informed opinion that may dissent from the majority of those posted and a troll who has consistently posted nonsense with no other intention but to upset and to vent a form of anger that requires professional attention is insulting.

The Dunphy book is timeless, in the sense that it was a piece of trash when it was published, it is now, and it will be until it mercifully goes out of print, which is just may after this U2 book hits — the only reason it still breathes is because of its topic, not because of its quality. This book may be the band-authorized alternative we all have been craving. Henke is a good choice. Never-before-seen photos? Ooh. I hope many of them are of Adam, because I haven’t seen a photo of him or heard a word about him since last year’s Academy Awards.

  25. I’d hardly call Dunphy’s book ‘Trash’. Flawed maybe, but it worked for me as a seventeen year old Mancunian just getting ‘deep’ into the band.

  27. I think U2 should ease up on the revisionist history for a bit. We had the Best OF albums etc. Do we need this book? There comes a point were we have to ease up on the mass marketing. “just don’t look…just don’t look” (Lisa Simpson). Its all about timing boys don’t forget.

  31. First of all, I am probably a bigger U2 fan than most of you. However, I am not a sheep who has to agree with everything Bono says just because I like his music. In fact, it shows how intelligent I am that I am not blinded by the music as so many of you are.

To think that Bono makes “real” sacrifices for his causes is ridiculous. He gets to fly around the world meeting with the most important people in the world, go to the best parties, and elevate his celebrity, and all without getting criticized for the policies he is trying to push just because he claims “I am not a politician”.

By the way, how come no one has ever posted a link to an article which shows that Bono actually donates a significant amount of money to his causes? Amazing how people here equate time with money. You all know it is easier for you to give up a few hours to cause than to give up your own money. Bono benefits from the time he puts into his causes and to deny it has no helped push U2 to mega stardom is to deny the truth.

    Sorry, but I totally disagree.
imo, it is FAR easier just to stay at home and simply write a cheque – there’s no emotional or personal involvement that way for a start. When you give your time, you give of yourself, you become involved, wholly. Bono is a very busy man, his time is precious, yet he still gives so much in so many ways. I respect and admire him immensely.

  37. kelly has hit upon a point, BUT Bono recognizes this and points out how silly it is to even BE a rock star, much less one flying around the globe meeting with world leaders and Oprah. His ‘sacrifices’ do sound a lot more fun than the ones most people make. But compare him with any other celebrity ‘activists’ and you’ll soon see that for Bono it’s not all about the money (for him) like you say. If Bono really wanted to ‘cash in’, they could sell “Streets” for a TV commercial. Hey, the man is doing the most he can in his position to try to make the world a better place for the less fortunate….and you’re knocking him for it?! Do you disagree with trying to help Africa at all, or with the way he’s going about it or the plans that he supports?
And contrary to what you say, Bono does not “bash” the US for not giving enough, in fact he has repeatedly praised US politicians including George W. for their support thus far.
I mostly support Bono’s ideas on DATA and Africa, but even if I didn’t, I think I would still admire him for the effort. Who’s doing more?
Sounds like you wouldn’t be happy until gave away every penny and lived destitute.
    Baaah 😉

  43. Von B is going to kill me, but my fingers have a mind of their own! ff is right — it is a thousand times simpler to get someone to write a check rather than to get them to take action, and anyone who thinks otherwise has spent no time doing this kind of work.

I have to share this here — as I write this, my printer is churning out flyers for, in this case, a Catholic church meeting — a call for action based on a direct message from the Pope to fight the African AIDS pandemic. This one takes the form of writing letters of protest to the pharmaceutical association in the US who not only charge outrageous prices for the antiretroviral drugs people need to stay alive, but actually sued the South African government last year to stop the importation of generic drugs, because of the impact on their bottom line. The president of the organization is a Catholic. Neither the Pope’s message nor this call to action appeared in this particular church’s bulletin, because the pastor couldn’t care less. He is a Franciscan, they take vows of poverty, and make a great show of being devoted to social action. And during the first week of Lent, he was vacationing in Mexico with another priest whose family owns a condo; during the first week of Advent, he was vacationing in Dublin; last Advent, Germany. And last November, all the happy little Friars from this area flew down to Florida so they could meet on how to best serve the poor! This church is on the east coast of the US, so I’m not talking about a drive over a border or a short hop on a plane. This kind of stuff goes on all over, and BONO is a hypocrite? You have to taste a little of what life is like before you decide what you’re going to chew and what you’re going to spit out.

  45. Ha, ha ha ha ha.

Bieke2be thank you so much for posting these ads!! You have just proved my point. Only in one ad did it say money was donated by Bono, and it said U2
not Bono, and it was for only 40,000
which is nothing for these multi-millionaires. A paltry 40,000 how pathetic!! All the other ads were fancy parties they attended to convince their friends to pony up the dough!!!

  47. Kelly, Kelly, full of ego in the Belly!
Childhood rhyme for a child like thought process. I saw U2 at Toads place in New Haven CT in 1980, I’ve been to 50 plus concerts. I have over 200 vinyl, yes ninyl bootlegs…but I would never claim to be a ‘bigger’ fan than anyone else…How lame are you?

Man, don’t we see how all this worldly travel and celeb meet and greets enhances B’s life with his family, friends and bandmates? If you think for a minute that the time that he and Ali spent in Ethiopia was for his benefit, or the countless miles traveling away from Ali and the kids in the recent years was to his benefit, imho, you are gravely wrong.
Negative spirits will all get their justice in the long run.

  49. Lucy, it is none of your business what I have done for charity. I am not the one going around the world lecturing people to give money to my causes so I don’t have to answer to anyone what my donations are.

Fan, please go back to school and study up on your reading comprehension. I wrote I probably was a bigger fan than most ppl on the site. I never said I was the biggest fan.

Too bad no one on this site has the intellectual ability to really argue against my statements on Bono. I guess I must be right than 🙂

Once again you show you are not in my league. Please go debate some 5 year olds because your childish posts indicate that is the level you can debate at.

Considering all you die hard Bono fans can’t find any articles showing how generous limo liberal Bono is. Only thing I have seen is people pointing out parties he attends with his celebrity friends.

I remember seeing an interview with him years ago and he said “if I wanted to get publicity I would say F#%$%$ on TV for exposure” And then I see him on TV doing this all the time after the POP album bomb. The guy has lost all respect I had for him. zHe has obviously done all this stuff to propel U2 back into the spotlight

  69. The word ‘troll’ is new to me and I don’t want to pick it up to describe people that don’t fall down at U2’s feet everytime they’re mentioned in public discussions. It is a dehumanizing term.

Kelly, I appreciate your candor but to say you are more intelligent than others is arrogant and turns people off…we want to attract people to discuss U2 and take an interest in their music and what they are struggling to try to communicate to the world…however, wrong it might be to us personally.

Vonb, I would not be offended if you choose to delete any comments that are ‘repetitive’ and bring nothing new to the discussion. It will help all of us to keep the site progressive and interesting.

  71. About the monetary donations…
There are a lot of people more wealthy than U2 in the grand scheme of things…being a millionaire is not really that impressive anymore. I went to Forbes.com to see who was the richest person in Ireland and it was surprising to me that U2 didn’t come close to Anthony O’Reilly who made his 1 BILLION mostly from inheritance.
So, Bono doesn’t get his power from his wealth, only by his association and what people GIVE him. He is a political figure all the way…because he commands a HUGE following or to use a political term: CONSTITUENCY.

Rock stars are political stars. The record companies BANK on U2’s credibility as artists which is what DRAWS the masses to their concerts. Sure, they can get away with making a lot off of their past hits…but in the long term, that runs out of steam and loses the competitiveness necessary to really gain in the current market. Being a rock star is really not that glamourous if you think about it. It’s just painted that way.

Thus, I think the rock star job is a perfect stepping stone into a full-time political (or evangelical) career.

I think the one poetic thing about Bono’s life is instead of building brick walls for a living…Bono is running into them 🙂

  73. To whom it may concern:

What are these ‘real’ sacrafices that get spoken of? Organs? Certainly not! Is he giving away all his money & property so his family has to go bereft & homeless? That boomtown rat bastard! Sarcasm intact…think about the children Special K. It called: “seeing the big picture” Wonderful thing to see…I can get it subtitles for you if you wish. Besides, who’d listen to him if he wasn’t a big rich rock star? I suppose he’d have to do it long way….go to university….that would take years…and certain situitions, especially in sub-saharan Africa are emergenies require action NOW! More flash than substance…yes, sometimes. Celebrity is currency remember….tand that Ballymunster is paying out big time. The point is saving lives.

Seems that the main point derision is the ‘liberal’ moniker. That has many connoctations for people. What is that exactly? What is it to be ‘liberal’? Open-minded? Compassionate? A view that the world is not inherently so simple. Does Bono offer simple solutions? Sometimes, admittedly, yes. ‘In the name of love’…little un-liberal in some respects, but like any Focaultian disallusion the method is in the perception. But he also recognizes the broader picture, the NGOs, the churches, IGEs, etc. The structure of poverty needs to be addressed, and to his credit he’s traveling on his own buck, delaying music, tours, etc & the ineviatable income of kapital..capital. Imagine a corperation that delayed pro=fits…’urg, lets make money next year!’ Conservatism can be a bit of an oxymoron….conserve the environment (at least so its sustainable for humans)…..naw! Tis a form of psychopathy…bottom line=supreme self-interest. We all indulge in that…by eating really….Bono included. Its the awareness that counts, and the ability to try to get past that…which he does very well. Is he the greatest person in the world? I dunno…I don’t know that many people. But he does get attention….to the chagrin to the devil in the details. He makes the point that its not a right/left issue…& whos to judge least be judged?

I’m hardly one to point fingers, I give my annual donations to worthy charities…my businness thats right, I will not hurl stones..but YOU put your $$ where your mouth exists you cloth eared prole-pretender.

I do declare that I am the biggest fan…and the smartest! Because its a blog & I can! Ha ha. Nobody here is smart enough to argue with me because I say so. I say the same thing at my MENSA meetings. Drives Hawking mad!

You claim victory by merely taking a side, an unpopular one perhaps in this blog, grab the mantle of intellegence by staking a claim of knowledge over something which you have no knowlege over yourself: that being how much has he donated? do you know? I don’t know….maybe if asked him he’d say the same thing: “Mind your own business.” Exactly. Little can be disproved….he hardly seems the type to walk around waving a big cheque….something called modesty…something I used to have I must admit.

Ah..to dictate opinion to those with their own opinions!

Sorry to ramble & I apologize for any grammatical errors. Language is so passe with my level of super-genius & super-fandom.

75. Clearly, Kelly is Ann Coulter. It’s the same “i’m right because you can’t prove I’m wrong” nonsense. It is indeed troll-speak. It also reminds me of the great line from the classic Ed Wood movie, where Criswell says, “Can you prove it didn’t happen?”
    Sigh….
By the way, I really am looking forward to that book!!!

  77. No response?

I’ve yet to hear a detailed account of your side k-man. Heard plenty from other folks defending their point, but i guess its sheep-speak to you, eh?

    Baaaaaa. Two legs bad.

  79. I love it! After reading a long winded rambling of sewermouth. Not a single person can dispute my claim that Bono is not such a saint as he is made out to be. Poor Bono, he actually has to pay for his own travelling expenses. Shameful!!! What a sacrifice!! He should be put up there with Harry Chapin for his good will.

As for knowing how much Bono donates, I am sure if it was a significant amount you would hear about it as an example of his sacrifices. but of course you don’t hear about it because he does not do it. I certainly hear a lot about his buying expensive homes. I am sure he rather have his donations made public more than his pleasure expenses. Oh yeah, Bono is better than a corporation because he is not after the bottomline, $$$. What is that supposed to prove? Ever heard of publicity? That is worth more to a rock star than anything.

  81. Definition of a troll, which is a word in use all around the internet, and has been for many years: “An outrageous message posted to a newsgroup or mailing list or message board to bait people to answer. Trolling is a form of harassment that can take over a discussion. Well meaning defenders can create chaos by responding to trolls. The best response is to ignore it. Also, the person who posts such messages.”
