‘Vertigo’ title Hirst suggestion?

vertigo1.gif

Our reader Paul, in Dublin, offers the following:

“A couple of weeks ago, the British conceptual artist Damian Hirst was in Dublin on business. I have it from a person who met Hirst during that visit, that Hirst mentioned he had been invited to U2’s studio and listened to some latest tracks with Bono. Bono asked Hirst for title suggestions to songs and Hirst mentioned ‘How to deconstruct an Atomic Bomb’ as one and ‘Vertigo’ as another. So there you go; ‘Vertigo’ could well be the title track to the album.”

It could well be. It’s certainly a little more snappy than ‘The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living’ or ‘Two Fucking and Two Watching’.

Or, indeed, ‘All that you can’t leave behind’.

(Update: People, please… these images were photoshopped by us. They’re not ‘real’.)

  1. I’m not sure about everyone else but I like the title. Just rumors now, so we’ll see what happens in the next few months.

  3. My feeling is that the first single will be called Vertigo, and the album will be called Hanover Quay.

    It makes more sense!

  5. Oi. I happen to like “All That You Can’t Leave Behind”.
Not too sure about “Vertigo” – Most of the other records have really apt, well thought out titles. I couldn’t comment properly until I knew how it fitted into the context of the music.

    Better than “Solar” though, yes?

  7. Niki,

I don’t think Achtung Baby was very well thought out and I think it’s a great title.

I’m all for the Vertigo title. I like the artwork. Are those possible covers?

  9. Great title, horrible covers (both). Maybe there will be a silhuete of Bono, like Hitch c o c k.

Sorry, I’d rather wait and see. Only time will tell.

  11. They invited Hirst to come up with song titles? Oh God, does this mean Bono is going to suspend Oprah in formaldehyde and put it in the Saatchi collection????

I love Vertigo as the title because I HAVE THAT!!

  13. “Are those possible covers?”

No. Please don’t tell me we have to provide a disclaimer. These are just things we photoshopped. Damien Hirst artwork + Hitchcock’s ‘Vertigo’ artwork.

  15. Hanover Quay would be a great title for the album, but no Americans would pronounce it correctly.

  17. being an american, how should i pronounce “hanover quay”? i’ve always pronounced it “hanover” – sounds pretty obvious, and then “quay” – “k-w-a-y”.

    how should it be said?

  19. For your education James, quay is pronounced “kee”.

From a Scot (who speaks better English than the English)

  21. I love the sound of Vertigo for a track/album/tour title

also love Hanover Quay for an album title too – nice little nod to The Beatles perhaps?

  23. And proud of it.

Vertigo sounds like a good title even if the supposed artwork is totally fake. The title doesn’t really matter but isn’t it damned exciting waiting. I feel another Joshua Tree coming on.

  25. Yes, we are all a bunch of dumb Americans who eat hamburgers every day, swill watery beer, never ride bikes, have never traveled overseas and can’t pronounce “Quay” correctly.

    hehe.

  27. I actually liked ‘Talking Jubilee’ better than ‘All That You Can’t Leave Behind’..
‘Vertigo’ has potential though…can we expect the U2005 Vertigo Tour? Maybe some Damien Hirst stage designs…a giant lemon in formaldehyde?

  29. Isn’t Hanover Quay the name of the studio U2 used for the last few albums? I also seem to remember them losing a zoning battle and the studio has been/will be demolished. The domain regs could just be for the studio. It both does and doesn’t make sense that they’d name the album after an old studio though. 😛

  31. And somebody made a good point about the Hanover Quay stuff: those domains were all reg’d in 2000, whereas the Vertigo ones are last month. So I think Vertigo is a much stronger candidate.

  33. Bleh, they can do better than “Vertigo” for an album title. Hoping its just a track title.

My personal favourite: Toxic Mega Colon

  39. Koreema knows just what it is she does
It cant be hard for her to get a buzz
    Down in the street below
You can hear the drunken prophet sing
“I know whats on your mind my boy
    I can see oh everything
Lead pipes are fortune made well
    Take a tip from me
Climb up to her window ledge or you’ll forever be

Just walking under ladders as the people round you hear you crying please”

Who really knows just what it is she does
It cant be hard for her
    To get a buzz
    The rapture of vertigo
    And letting go
Me myself i was never sure
    Was it the liquor
    Or was it my soul?
