U2 album rough cut lost or stolen

Police in Nice and Marseille are investigating the alleged theft of a CD containing songs from U2’s upcoming album. A police spokesman informed the press they are not sure whether the recording was stolen or ‘just got lost’. This news was reported earlier today by French newspaper Nice-Matin.

The CD went missing during a photo shoot at the (former) Victorine film studios in Nice.

Studios Victorines (image) is currently known as ‘Studios Riviera’. The former centre of horticulture was the backdrop for François Truffaut’s La Nuit Am

  1. So, the question is: Was is really stolen? The finished album or just some demos?
Or is it just a new PR gag? U2 back on the headlines and MTV etc., that a new album is finished and out in Nov. And all this ads for free…not bad 😉

  3. The last time stuff was stolen Bill Graham commented it was desperately easy to run off with U2 material as they left it sitting about for the taking just about everywhere.

  5. I’ve got reason to believe, and tangible support, that this has been set up over the last couple of days. Do not be surprised to see tracks hit the internet soon.

    Free press IS good press.

  9. What is this “reason to believe with tangible support” that you speak of superman?

If tracks do get released to the internet then you know what that means! New U2 album in SUMMER ’04! However, I’d really rather see the record stay behind closed doors and given its proper release.

  13. james: let’s just say I’ve got ‘tangible support’ of interest in this event prior to the cd being stolen by those who would be the most interested ;).

  17. This is just GREAT. Surely that wasn’t their only copy? And if so, why would they carry it around with them? (Especially with Bono’s habit of losing things!) I hope this doesn’t delay the album.

  19. Superman, so you’re telling me that you were aware of this “publicity stunt” prior to its actual occurrence? If so, hey, there’s plenty of people out there who know U2 so I could believe that.

But what is the point in bringing the release of the album forward by potentially months? Wouldn’t a “stunt” make more sense a couple of weeks early? The band obviously isn’t even done with album (sequencing, photos, etc.)

Any way you can be a little more specific?

  21. james: At the time of my knowledge I thought it was odd that specific interest was being paid to the ‘tangible support’, however now it seems to be highly suspicious activity considering that this theft transpired within 72 hours of that.

I apologize, but I must be vague about this for now.

  23. LOL! U2 has had a very sophisticated marketing team working for them and this is yet another attempt to:

    1. Get great feedback from fans on new material. New songs will be on the net soon.U2 have worked on this album forever, but it’s hard to get honest feedback when the album is your baby. Great idea to let fans talk about best songs(to figure out track list) and best versions of songs. It’s like when movie studios test screen a movie for feedback (e.g. pick the best ending).

    2. Get the album marketing blitz going early. This is just the first salvo in a 3 month marketing bonanza.

I highly doubt this loss was an accident. I mean, Edge and McGuiness’ quotes seemed highly suspect. I guess anything is possible, but U2 have done this so many times (oops, accidentally gave Electrical Storm to a DJ!!!!) and it appears to have worked okay for them, at least not done much harm given their recent albums’ multi million record sales.

  25. I personally think this wasn’t a marketing leak or somethign U2 has staged. Otherwise, why let French police go through all this and have it reported as stolen. A leak would happen privately and just the songs popping up on the net, not this highly publicized theft way.

  27. The police haven’t issued a statement. Just Edge, Paul, and a VP. There is no proof the cops are involved.

  33. I can’t believe they’d be doing it to secretly get feedback…. it’s hard to believe that U2, seasoned musicians, need fans’s opinions to hone the track order or lyrics. Nevermind the fact they’d never get overwhelming agreement among fans about the “best” song or “best” arrangement.

I think it’s really shitty for the band if this is true. I’d feel sick if my stuff was released to be heard/critiqued before I approved of it. I hope it doesn’t reach the internet…really hope it slipped between Bono’s car seats or something.

If they wanted to get a buzz going, they’d have said Bono lost it. He loses everything. Not Edge. Plus the press was going long before this. Nary was there a mention of Bono do-gooding without them slipping in when U2’s next album was due.

Besides. Edge was the one schlepping around that little boom box in Portugal, remember? Most likely containing a rough cut of the album to “get a feel” for the photo shoot, no? This was also a photo shoot, so, why not do the same thing?

Worse than Fox Mulder and the Lone Gunmen, you entire lot.

Call the new album: “All That You Tend to Leave Behind When You’re Pissed and Don’t Know Where You Are and Would Forget Your Head if It Weren’t Attached”

If you’ve got a clue, share it. Hey, I’m gonna buy the album in november regardless, but it would be great to have the tunes from the demo now. tell me. What do you got?

  43. It’s an Irish government consipircy about the fact that they have known for years that The Edge is really an alien… Adam and Larry have tried doing the “oh, I’m just in the back of the band” crap for years, come on, it’s obvious they are men in black assigned to protect The Edge and his intergalactic space telecommunicator a.k.a. “guitar rig” from an ignorant public…

  45. Ooh, we get to talk to the alleged perpetrator? OK, you lowlife out in the Internet ether, you are a thief, a scumsucking little toad who should be strung up by his nuts. If you had even a clue what it feels like to create anything, instead of living life as the parasite you are, you would know the anger and frustration of people like U2 who lose control of THEIR work through people like you. If any of this shows up on the Internet, think really hard, all of you, before you download it. It is WRONG. Plain and simple. If you call yourselves fans, you don’t do things to screw over the band you supposedly love. THEY control THEIR work. You’ll get to hear their work, when THEY say, in the circumstances THEY determine. It is their right as artists. Damn it, it’s about time people started understanding this. It doesn’t matter if it’s someone who makes millions off a CD or someone who lives off half the bar take when they’re lucky enough to score a gig — it’s WRONG.

Maybe it’s just that I can’t stand living in Bush’s America, but when people start feeling they are entitled to everything and anything without any consideration of others or any sense of what is right or wrong, we are DOOMED!

    That’s it — evenin’ all….

  47. Coincidentally (or not) Dave Matthews’ “Lillywhite Sessions” has to be one of the most famous studio bootlegs….their fans basically got an extra album, and it generated a buzz for the real album. My hope? New U2 mp3s in the very near future…and a different, new album in the Fall.

  49. Paige, it isn’t Bush’s America… it was here when Slick Willy was pres, and will still be here if Kerry gets elected.

As for the tunes, while I’m interested to hear the demos I dont want it to take away from my enjoyment of the finished album. Caught between a rock and a hard place I guess…

  51. um… everyone just needs to chill out. digital rights are important (i buy from iTunes), but u2 fans have had a four year wait since the last full album. who can blame people for wanting to download and give a listen. everyone who checks this site out is probably such a fan that they will buy two copies of the album the day it comes out. if you don’t want to download the songs, fine, but quit tearing the other fans apart because they crave for a new u2 fix. who hear is self-righteous enough to say they have never downloaded an illegal copy of a song? I downloaded tons of songs from the salome album and they were awesome! and I bought the achtung baby album multiple times since it’s been out (u2 isn’t the only one who loses cd’s 😛 ). So just stay calm and let’s have some fun. What do you think the tracks are going to be on the final album?

  53. Paige, thanks for your anger. I have been feeling all day as if I am living in another moral universe. What really is wrong with people, that there is so little understanding of how people might feel who have had the creative work of several years stolen from them? The reaction has been almost unreservedly, and disgustingly, selfish. Either U2 has been cynically accused outright of staging the whole thing for publicity, including making a false statement to the police (Yeah, we love the band, but we have absolutely zero respect for their integrity), or so-called fans have just ignored the details and have asked “Where can I download it?”
I despair for humanity. These are U2 fans??

  65. Ah, rupe, my voice in the wilderness, thank you!

It’s amazing how little it takes to be dubbed a moral crusader these days — watch for my next startling, self-righteous concept,”Rape is a bad thing.”

It’s amazing how you don’t “get it.” You can buy a thousand copies of the CD when it comes out, it’s not THE POINT. It’s their RIGHTS, it’s EVERYONE’S RIGHT, as an artist, to control their own work. It’s their property, their effort, their result, not YOURS. It isn’t your call when you get to hear the work, it’s THE BAND’S. And I love this, it’s been FOUR WHOLE YEARS since they put out an album, so it’s right to download stolen material from the CD. Like babies crying for the bottle, instant gratification, we have to have it NOW! What a bunch of spoiled brats! That’s how you go through life, just taking what you want, when you want it, and screw everyone else? I’d like to see someone swipe your laptops or IPods and then say to you, well, why not, I can’t afford one of my own, and I want it, NOW! You’d be screaming bloody murder. How fast would you be to say, “hey, chill out, it’s happened before, who cares?” if it were happening to you.

Rupe, big shout out across the atmospheric continuum to you, and to all the others who feel the same way but just lurked, I know they’re there. I know not to go to any logs or message boards for Marilyn Manson or the John Birch Society because it AIN’T going to work. But a U2 place should be just fine. And what do we get? People putting Bono down for all his good and important work to fight the AIDS pandemic, people accusing a band that for 25 years have worked toward maintaining a morally and intellectually sound stance and integrity in their lives and in their work, of a cheap publicity stunt, wondering how they can get a piece of a theft commited against a band they “love.” More proof of the worthlessness of labels. U2 fans, indeed. I wonder how their enemies treat them?

  67. paige, why you “so cruel”, girl. Have you been “staring at the sun”. I realize we’re “north and south of the river” on this thing, but don’t get “stuck in a moment you can’t get out of”. You’re coming off like some “holy joe” why don’t you give the rest of us some “grace”? A lot of us are going to download the tracks “with or without you”. Besides none of the tracks have hit the net yet so let’s have some “peace on earth”. Until that “dirty day” why don’t you go back up to “your blue room”, all your ranting has left me “numb”. Before you “exit”, if you still think it’s “bad” just think of “the first time” you heard “one” song from a new u2 album you were waiting for. I’m sure you thought it was a “beautiful day” and, “in the name of love” paige, don’t let your “pride” deny it. We’re talking “elevation”, an “unforgettable fire” of passion and emotion. That’s all we’re trying to do. Tryin’ to live like it’s the “last night on earth”. Who knows if we have “tomorrow”? It’s not like “I threw a brick through a window”, I’m just looking for “a sort of homecoming”. If you still don’t think our “two hearts beat as one”, what can I say? “Some days are better than others.” I mean I won’t be going around “dancing barefoot”, but i won’t be gettin’ “a room at the heartbreak hotel.” Go have some cookies and “mlk”, and maybe I’ll talk to you again “in a little while”.

The more people post about the music, the more curious I get until I finally
    cave in and listen myself.

It never seems to dampen the excitement of getting the official CD, though.

  73. Paige – intellectual property like U2’s new album is “property” but it’s not “property” like a laptop or an iPod. Intellectual property is a limited monopoly on creative work. In effect, it’s a balancing of rights between the creator (in this case, U2) and the public (us).

Downloading U2’s unreleased material would be a completely different thing than stealing someone’s actual physical property. It’s copyright infringement, but it’s *not* theft.

I know a lot of people who wouldn’t think twice about downloading unreleased material, but would never swipe a U2 CD from a record store. Your analogy fails for this reason.

People who are big enough U2 fans to read U2log.com are not likely to forego purchasing the album when it comes out just because they downloaded unfinished, unreleased material (if it ever shows up). I say, have at it.

  74. Paige – intellectual property like U2’s new album is “property” but it’s not “property” like a laptop or an iPod. Intellectual property is a limited monopoly on creative work. In effect, it’s a balancing of rights between the creator (in this case, U2) and the public (us).

  75. Hi I am Bono, The USA has done nothing for Aids in the world!!! By the way, I believe Koffi Anna is a great man, even though he let’s people die in Africa for his political gain, takes money from dictators like Saddam, and gets his son lead positions.

That is all fine, but the US are the evil ones because they only gave 15 billion dollars to fight Aids, a disease that is easily preventable.

  81. How does a discussion about missing songs turn into random bleeding imbeciles spouting verbal diarrhea about who-gives-a-snort?

Back to our news tidbit at hand, shall we?

I figured out what happened to the disc. The dog ate it.

    Ha! I slay me.

  83. this is so bogus. U2 made up this story to get press. “Oh my .. we ‘might’ have ‘lost’ a CD … what ever will we do? This doesn’t seem credible … but it happened to us!” Give me a break. If the story was true the tracks should have hit the net by now. U2 being a tease. Just put the album out already.

  85. OK,here it is lads!

This is a marketing ploy thought up by the band as they finished the last song for the album when in the studio.
Bono and the band have about 18 very good songs completed and all album potential. The band left the studio and headed for Universal Studio to “pitch” the marketing idea.
    The idea…
1)The band want to come up with a mini album with 7 or 8 good songs immediatly. Simular to what they did with Zooropa. But this time with a marketing theme with it to sell it.
    2) Tell the world that the “new album” rough trackes were lost or stolen. Wait a week or two and then hold a press conference or via press release to release 7 or 8 songs immediatly before it hits the “web”.The album will be called “U2 the lost or stolen rough cuts 2004”
    3) U2 will also mention that the “vertigo” album will be delayed until next year in the spring. Tour will begin in June outdoor stadium.
U2 will do a mini tour in Europe this Winter.
So watch for an announcement on the press conference later this week or early next week!

  87. if the tracks are leaked to the internet I won’t download them before getting the album. I’m into delayed gratification, what can I say. 😉 I WILL, however, download them AFTER the album has been released… to do a little comparing out of curiousity… but until the album is officially released, I’ll resist the temptation. For some reason, I’m not bothered by waiting.

I have to say, however, that while I don’t believe this is a publicity stunt, I also think it’s weird that the tracks haven’t shown up on the internet ALREADY if someone really stole the cd. Perhaps Edge really just lost it, and the disc will become a holy grail for U2 fans for generations, making pilgrimages to the south of France in hopes of finding the mythical disc…

  89. This lie about the tracks being stolen is U2’s way of saying “this album is going to suck but the excuse is someone stole the tapes”. Remember they did this when Pop came out and that album sucks big time
