  1. Eclipsed by the iPod video. That really rocked. I’m not sure the Spanish video was worthwhile. Couldn’t they have made this video in a studio? Also, “vertigo” — something about heights, right?

  3. the reason they did it in the desert is because of all of the natural sand and the helicopter shots from the air.. we can’t really judge the video i think because its really bad quality, i think a DVD quality version would look much nicer

  5. I like it. Certainly less ‘clutter’ which they were going for. Doesn’t have to relate to heights, just uneasiness.

  7. The Desert setting was very cool – and not only a desert, but a desert that has lightning storms and snow, you cannot get a better atmosphere for a rock and roll song like Vertigo. The beautiful payoff of its authenticity will be revealed in higher quality viewing.

Also, to clear up Vertigo’s semantics, a state of Vertigo is not exactly ‘exclusive’ to matter of heights, that would be ‘acrophobia’ if anything. Vertigo is dizziness and/or giddiness, both of which can be caused by excessive excitement, opiate related drug cocktails, dangerous street racing, hyper-panoramic dreamstates, etc.

    Long live this single!

  9. I think the black trail stuff looks a little cheesy… but the rippling ground thing is AWESOME!

Yeah the iPod ad rocks the mainline. This is kinda cool. But between the “underground club” video, the iPod video and now this one, how many music videos for a single can we have?

“Too much is not enough. Lemon.”

    🙂

  11. Can…not…get…enough…of…this…song!!!! Why does it still surprise me after all this time? They get better and better and this video can’t be topped! (I said the same about Beautiful Day though when that came out).

  13. ichris… that was hilarious!

<< has a sudden urge to stop by target too.

I am diggin that video too.

I am curious why they choose to premiere it on AOL and not mtv first. Musta been some serious$$ flying around to get this deal. I know AOL is hurting for business. Guess it may relate to that.

  15. I must retract my initial comment about the video.

I had taken a tylenol 3 for pain at the time.

I have to agree with Bernhard that this particular Vertigo video is very much over-produced, very artificial. It would have been a cooler concept if it was strictly more of a desert performance, with only very subtle variations in the background – like using the natural elements with surreal enhancements. As it stands, it looks painfully like the ridiculously gaudy Lil Bow Wow video ‘Take Ya Home’, perhaps one the worst (music?) videos of all time.

The only real awesome effect in this new Vertigo video is the dark sand-line exploding upwards ominously around the band.

Bono said less clutter, but the video is essentially too busy with computer-laden effects that are incredibly un-special.

To agree with Bernhard further, the punkier metallic blue studio Vertigo video is in fact much more complementary and effective.

Still, the advantage of being as good as U2 is that their music can make the video look better!

  17. aol has exclusive deals with universal music – it’s that simple.

the video will be on mtv tomorrow on mtv’s making of a video. that’s 10/28.

now if only the “editors” of this little website don’t edit my comments as the do everytime – some of you might get this…

  21. I like the black trails when they are looping around the band, but they just look bad when they stream out of them. Is the little circle thing flying in the air fast enough they give smoke trails or something??

At times the moving background is interesting, especially when the band seems to “react” to it, though it is a bit overdone. Not bad, but I was expecting something a bit different.

  23. Despite all those computer FX – which are definitely overused – I must admit that this video is quit ordinary. U2 has always been appreciated for their will to create something new.

No plot here, no story either. Just the same oooold thing: A band playing. Wow! That’s it? That’s all a band like U2 – after 20 years – can do? Come on guys!

  25. Not all that excited about it. Supposedly two great directors, and this is what they come up with?? Could have been a lot better, IMO. Still love the song, though.

  29. Eh, it’s OK….a better song than video (Isn’t that always the case with U2? OK by me).

I made a Vertigo video in WMV starring my 2 1/2 year old daughter…I like it better than this one, but I’m partial. I’ll probably regret this, but you can check it out on my blog if you want (scroll down past Dale Jr pics from the Martinsville race), lemme know what you think

  33. I’m just gonna watch it on TV the way nature intended. That is, if I can keep myself from downloading it right now… I don’t know. All these negative reviews aren’t encouraging me to go watch it.

  35. Ok, just seen it from atu2.com

Love it, but I prefer the IPOD ad, Bono flirting with the camera more. YES, I’m shallow.

  37. I don’t like this version of the video one tick. I like the “studio” version a better. I think the extra treatments in this vid are what killed it for me. The band are exciting enough to watch without swarms of black dust being powerblasted off their backs. eck….

Like Mysterious ways but less drunk.

  41. I like to think the black stuff is pollution pouring from the band’s pores… sort of sweating out Elevation, and this hiddious first single, let us hope and beg, things get better. *cleansing self with some Boom Cha, Boom Cha…*

  43. I think the song is Bono singin’ about Jesus again. It describes his confusion, his ambivilence in believing in such crazy times, he is lost in the desert, he is in vertigo between Heaven and Hell. The imagery would suggest these themes.

The black stuff is evil being blasted out of the band by the white light of God!

    Perhaps?

    😉

  45. Good performance video…will look much better on TV….does not grab you on it’s initial viewing like ‘Beautiful Day’ or even ‘Discotheque’ IMO. The video for ‘Beautiful Day’ is hard to top.

  49. I love it; reading all your comments ultimately saves me time. To somewhat reiterate:

    1) Totally Target. But, I’m a little trained; I worked there for 5 years.

    2) The part where they sink into the target: reminds me of ancient Greek ampitheatres, Red Rocks, the like. And I like that…I was thinking in-the-round, too. Or at least replicate the intimacy of that kind of venue in the live show.

    3) I really enjoyed the stopping of the track when they rise from the target. It pulls me in where some of the shots lost me momentarily.

    4) At least Bono’s not wearing a damn straw hat.

  51. hmm i can hardly make out the bandmembers in this stream, let alone judge the way i think the video looks. i mean, i get one blurry 100×100 frame every half a second. That is hardly ‘video’ is it? i’ll wait for it to show up on mtv…

  55. What happened to the days when a U2 video constituted playing on a barge in a river. Just because we are capable of using special effects doesn’t mean they have to be used- it’s undermining. Maybe television will make this look better. I would have preferred a Corbijn or Avis treatment by far.

  57. The video looks *much* better on television. While it’s still not their best interesting-visuals-surround-just-the-band video (that award goes to Staring at the Sun), it’s interesting enough possibly to get the brain-dead MTV adolescents watching.

  59. Hey, let me guess: it’s not the video for MTV, it’s just a performance cut from spain shooting, with all the computer stuff, and the tv video will have a better edition, with some kind of storyline, and more Bono’s close ups, including the open shirt! Can’t stay around spain two days in the sand for this!

    Is there a chance? I hope so…

  61. The good news is that nobody actually *plays* videos these days, so the exhaust pipe embarassment that is this video won’t spread to broadly.

But don’t be dissing on Bono’s straw hat. I bought one yesterday so I could look like him. (kidding!) But it does cover up his thinning ‘do, as per The Edge.

  63. Embarassment? That’s quite a leap. The video is just fine. Nothing amazing, but nothing outrageously stupid or embarassing. But you’re right, nobody actually plays videos anyways, so it doesn’t even matter.

  65. I wouldn’t mind either way, straw hat or not in this Vertigo video – and why all the comments about the ‘hairline’? Are we fans of U2, or some boy band where we want Bono to have frosted-tip metrosexual hair at the age of 50?

Bono’s look has always been innately cool, and I personally think the lad is looking more distinguished than most younger bands.. for example, the lead singer of Green Day trying to remain relevant, ‘innovative’ by wearing ‘eye-shadow’ in his 30’s… no matter how much make-up he puts on, the music is still a limited, recycled sound. Alas, my main point is that U2 is about the music, and frontman Bono has the talent and swagger to get away with wearing straw hats or not.

    Go, Go Vertigo!

  71. Well, I see “U2 Makes a Video” coming on tonight at 11:00 central time here in the states on MTV (TRL won’t play the entire thing I’ll bet), and I will hold judgement until I can actually see what the hell is going on, come on this is a crappy way to premier the video… BTW, anybody remember the VH1 special and all the craziness that surrounded “Beautiful Day”??? I hope to see some hoopla, even though TRL is a joke and U2 deserve better, it’s about the only thing that plays even portions of videos on MTV anymore… Where’s Vh1 on this, is another “Remember all the Awsomely Great SHit that happened yesterday” marathon going on today???

  73. Easy, fellas…

Straw hat or no, I’m not qualified to review Bono’s image. I like his music, his attitude and usually his politics. If it takes a straw hat, a skull cap or even a hooded sweater to make them “cool” enough to get his message and his art out, I’m all for that.

As for the video (and i admit i haven’t seen it in dvd quality yet), I am disappoint. It’s not that it’s boring (like the bandmembers) sitting on a train or something, just that it tries too hard and doesn’t bring much new to the song (though i do like the sinking bit right before “give me what i want and noone gets hurt”). It’s just not going to help the single in the way the Charles DeGaul airport video for Beautiful Day did. In this video, there’s nothing like the ecstacy of the band reaching to the heavens while standing on an oriental rug covered runway with 747s zooming….

  75. U2’s greatest videos:

Mysterious Ways, One, Even Better Than the Real Thing, Beautiful Day, Stay, Lemon, Where the Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, Discotheque and….Vertigo..I think it’s in the top ten.

  77. Shallow? I think the IPOD’s blatently- commercial-music-video shown during the WORLD SERIES is very SURFACE oriented…YET…did you notice how we could see details in the band’s faces and NOT in the dancers…it’s a way better video than their “official” video. I can tell U2 from their silhouettes ANYWHERE…I didn’t need help! AND Bono wasn’t wearing his straw hat…PROBABLY because a director wanted his hair to fly up and it would just fall off when he does his POSE at the end….good pose…I think Bono has his own dance…it’s great! Oh, and Edge and Larry and Adam are great, too. :oP

  79. I think the video is OK, I actually like it a little better than the iPod video. Granted, the black trails of smoke coming from the guys looks a bit cheesy. *g* Vertigo is not one of their heavier songs, so the treatment fits, I thought.

Beautiful Day is probably their best video this decade, although I am also a bit enamored of the Walk On video for shallow reasons, Bono is f-ing hot in it. 😉

  81. U2 BAND of the Eighties has turned into

    U2 Band of the SellOuts!!!

Limo Liberal Bono has gotten so full of himself with his bullsh^t politics that U2 now are a joke of a band now doing Apple commericals

  83. Ah, the charming Kelly, arriving just in time for all of us to ignore you.

Although I must say there’s something almost comfortingly predictable about you: The sun rises, the sun sets, Kelly calls Bono a liberal.

What did you think of the video?

  85. Well, MTV just played it to a bunch of 13 year old kids whose idea of classic rock is Eminem’s first album (maybe not, but they didn’t act especially blown away)… I really like the video, not quite in love with it like I am the song, but, NO ONE else has a video like this one and I still think it’s better than anything else out right now, maybe not the Streets video, but still really, really cool, definitely belongs in the u2 catalog, and much better than the American SIAM video!!! Last time U2 was in the desert (for videos or pictures), they were doing some of the best music ever made IMO, so I already like it a little more just thinking of that!!!

  87. I’ve just seen it for the first time as well. I agree, Ryan, that it’s different from other videos being played right now, and that’s a good thing. I saw Atomic Cafe just a couple of nights ago on TV, and some of the aerial views remind me of shots from that documentary of the immediate aftermath of nuclear blasts.

  89. I watched the video a couple more times today and I still don’t get into it. I’d say the Apple version is good, as is the studio version from Top Of The Pops.

As for a song, I do like it, however what’s with the the “POWER POWER POWER 96.7 FM” vocal slow down in the line “….and no one gets huuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrttttttttt.”???? Not so cool imho but does anyone else like that vocal effect?

  93. first, i’d like to thank u2log for giving us great news and this opportunity to comment FREELY

second, u2 are trying really really really hard to be a part of the internet and new technology which is nice

third, i think most of us like all the free stuff and i think u2 are one of the few bands who can get away with giving it away

fourth, i’d hate to be a band coming up nowadays because it’s practically a flash in the pan

fifth, i think the issues are serious that bono deals with in his life and music but it doesn’t seem to be serious enough to keep him from being a rock star

  95. Matt (post 51) – lol – you (rather your wife!) summed up in one sentence what I tried to say in a couple hundred words.

And furthermore, I changed my mind again about the video, I don’t think it’s that bad after all!

It’s alright, alright, alright… for now.

  97. It’s a grower thats for sure. Like most of U2’s first singles it takes time to digest the new direction. In a years time everyone that’s slagging it now will be jumping up and down. Including me.

  99. WTF??? The direct TV schedule has shown a time for MTV to show a U2 makes a video special 3 times now and it never comes on!!! It’s always some other god awful room raiders show or something of that nature… What the hell is going on here??? Are they just toying with my emotions??? Bastards!!!

  103. We, as fans, have unconditional love for U2. Not blind love.

Like how parents will love their children no matter what, but can still offer constructive criticism for certain choices that those children make.

Like, “Bono, dear, I wouldn’t recommend wearing that straw hat again. It doesn’t go very well with leather.”

It’s a joke, people. Please don’t call me shallow.

  105. I work in Human Resourses at Target and just want to thank U2 for inspiring some of the folks who commented before me.

I love the song. I Will always love think the video is good but not my favorite. I still think this whole album will be the best so far.

  107. Not that anyone probably cares, but this film clip is a grower! I remember when I saw Beautiful Day the first time I didn’t like it much except the plains. But I really like the part of the film clip where the edge is doing his Solo, the clip is much better than what i initially thought anyway but yeah it’s not there best, maybe they are leaving it for the others hey
