U2 Up For The Grammys Again

U2 are nominated for three Grammy awards this year, all for “Vertigo” (naturally) — Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group (with Vocal); Best Rock Song (songwriter’s award); and Best Short Form Music Video. The band opted to straddle the eligibility period again, so How To Dismantle… and its other tracks will not come up for consideration until next year’s awards.

U2log.com finds itself in a crisis of faith in this year’s awards, as our staff also strongly endorses several of the bands up against U2 for Best Rock Performance by a Group (namely The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Elvis Costello & The Imposters, and Green Day). A long dark night of the soul approaches. (Hey, Bono asked for competition, and he’s clearly getting it…)

  3. von B, you can thank me later for The Killers recommendation. 🙂 I’m actually seeing them tonight here in P-town. And even if you don’t endorse Green Day, at least endorse their commentary on our dufus president! -SP

  5. Vox, wnough about the election. It’s over, some people are happy, some aren’t, but life moves on. Let us know how the Killers were live, I’ve never heard them before…

  7. U2vox, how DARE you? You spell it d-u-f-i-s!! (wink wink..)

U2 log eds, I don’t think a long day’s journey into night is necessary over this one. Give the other bands and performers a chance, U2 have won enough of these things, and really, they are no big deal. Ever since Marvin Hamlisch beat Bad Company as Best New Artist in ’74, I realized there’s no point in getting your knickers in a twist over the Grammys…But what short form video version, the mysterious what-happened-to-the-storyline version or the IPod one???

  9. It would be nice if young bands got the chance to fall on their arse and grow before they are awarded instant Grammy death. Give ’em room to be The Police before settling for being Sting.

I’m rooting for the Scissor Sisters. Still hope there’s some truth to the rumours of them supporting U2, though it’s probably likely they go for the safer rawk option of the other rumoured acts. Having the Sisters as U2’s support would work really well in the U.K. and Ireland. Perhaps the ‘dance’ nomination is the death knell for that. Dance? Dance? Isn’t that pure pop?

@ IZZYMD04, re: “enough about the election.” Agree with that. Stick to music, people, there’s enough to argue about there.
@ Paige, I have edited your post. Let’s call it a pre-emptive strike. Any comments via e-mail please.
@ u2vox, thanks — it’s always nice to be a few seconds ahead of the pack!

  11. Calling Greenday competition is too big a compliment for them :p but they’re quite ok.

The Killers, noone will know who they are next year.

    Franz is good 🙂

Elvis, well, there’s only one Elvis 😉

  13. Okay, okay. The dufus president comment was entirely tongue in cheek and meant jokingly – not intended to spark a dead horse political discussion. Regardless, The Killers were quite good last evening, though they only played for 55 mins. I guess when you only have one album and a few b-sides, and you play them all faster than the recorded version, that’s what happens. See U2 live shows circa 1980/81. At least The Killers didn’t start AND end with the same song… 😉

  15. Just to be the guy with the unpopular opinion — I think people really undervalue Green Day. If you listen to their greatest hits collection (which I bought on impulse in the checkout line at Sainsbury’s while I lived in the UK ;-D) you might be surprised at the run of strong, clever singles they’ve released over the years; being “punk” never seems to have been the point with them so much as writing good pop songs was, and though they come from a punk background, all the bands they transparently idolize were great pop singles acts (The Clash etc.). If you’re willing to consider them in that sort of continuum, they might really appreciate in your estimation.

Also, I do think we’ll still be talking about the Killers in a few years, but that’s contingent on their getting another album out — I’m with Caroline in hoping that all these great new bands being slathered with praise will be allowed the chance to release a couple more albums on which they stretch out and really get ready for their prime. The Killers are obivously doing well enough to get a second album released, but if that one doesn’t do well they probably won’t get a third, and that’s just criminal — U2 could’ve been dropped after OCTOBER… it’s the same old rant but when I see all these first-time acts getting Grammy nominations, it just gets more and more obvious that there’s a lot of too-much-too-soon going around in the industry.

  17. I actually agree with Chris that Green Day wrote many well-crafted pop songs (When I Come Around and She come to mind), but I think that the reason why they aren’t valued more has to do with their inability to escape their original “punk” trappings.

Look at Nirvana — their artistry matured a great deal between Nevermind and In Utero. I think it’s hard to say the same for Green Day’s Dookie and Nimrod, for example. And I think they probably set themselves up for that (e.g. Billie Joe Armstrong singing with an affected British accent — does he still do that?). Any young band probably faces this problem of growing beyond what they start out as (certainly U2 did), but I think the huge success of Dookie may have made Green Day a bit complacent with themselves. Fans of any popular young band should fear this.

Getting back to U2, does anyone feel it is a bit underhanded for them to straddle the single & album releases? It worked for ATYCLB, in that it got them Grammys a-plenty, but is this gamesmanship or greed? Or do y’all think it’s cool?
