Sometimes… B-Sides

The NME has released the details about the “Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own” single for the UK & Europe (as previously reported, “All Because Of You” will be the second single in North America). Released on Feb. 7th, the two CD formats will include:

  • “Ave Maria” (sung by Bono & Pavarotti and remixed by Jacknife Lee)
  • “Vertigo (Redanka Remix)”
  • “Fast Cars (Jacknife Lee Remix)”

The DVD single will contain a live performance of “Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own” from the band’s Dublin studio (no word on whether or not this is the BBC’s studio performance, or the one previously released on the limited DVD, or something else entirely), plus a Trent Reznor (!!!) remix of “Vertigo.”

Also revealed in the article is the fact that HTDAAB has sold a million copies in the UK. We’ve heard a report saying that the album has already shifted over seven million copies worldwide, but we can’t confirm that, because we just don’t have enough fingers to count on. (We even got the whole staff together and we still ran out.)

  1. I bought the book version to get fast cars. A remix by jacknife should rock. Ave Maria????
the last of the opera stars..

  3. Not another Jacknife Lee remix … 🙁 And another one. Fast cars 😐
Somehow the remixes never quite satisfy me. It’s always boring dance mixes in which the only thing that reminds you that it once was a u2 song, is Bono’s voice…

So, USA is getting a different 2nd single than Europe. Why?

  5. It’s probably another promo&video-only non-cd single release (with the ITMS this time around)

In Europe we’ll be getting plenty of chance to get our wallets empty on a billions of formats of one single.

And this will probably be done to make up for the fact that the Brooklyn live tracks are still not available in out ITMS &*%^!

  7. More remixes?? The remixes are alright I guess, but I see them as filler. I like to get some real b-sides. “Are you gonna wait forever” was a decent b-side. Sounded like a leftover from the Achtung era, but with new lyrics that fit with the “home” theme of ATYCLB.

Here in the US we’re getting “All Because of You”. Not too sure why, but if I had to guess I’d say U2 is trying to reach more of a mainstream audience. Look at “Vertigo”, upbeat tempo and all ABOY is sort of the same just not as fast. Both rock. I still like the original version of ABOY better. You might know it as “She’s gonna blow your house down” from the Achtung outtakes. Even “Fast Cars” has the guitar sound of “Salome” thrown in there. Listen to the outtakes of “Salome”. There are many versions. 🙂

Anyhow, I’ll be on a search to find both of the singles.

  9. Enough with the remixes already!

Does anyone listen to these cheesy dance remixes more than once anyway? I can’t see their use except for maybe doing housecleaning.

The last time the band released an interesting remix was on the “Sunday Bloody Sunday” single with those remixes of “Two Hearts Beat as One” and “New Years Day” with alternate lyrics.

What happened to “Maybe”? Is that just going to be left to float around in the ether?

  11. Oh no! they are using remixes as fillers again! Why not use Mercy, or Xanax and wine, or any other more interesting b-sides? It seems such a long time ago since the Joshua Tree, when there were easily Three (3!) great B-sides on EVERY released single…. So 4 years of recording time leaves us with twelve songs and thats it? The 12 songs on HTDAAB are great and huge, don’t get me wrong, but……They didn’t record any other songs..? Oh come on!

  13. Well, “Xanax & Wine” is just an early version of “Fast Cars” — fun to listen to but not as good as the album version. But it would be nice to have “Maybe” released officially, at the very least.

I miss those great U2 singles with a litter of amazing b-sides on each. I never, never listen to the remixes — and so I’ll probably won’t end up buying the new single.
