The Magical Mystery Tour

While the Elevation tour was about getting back to basics, the Vertigo tour will be about spectacle. A source has revealed to The Mirror that U2’s tour will employ five video screens, a huge sound system, more than 3,000 lights (probably 2,000 will light Bono alone), and — get this! — special effects designed by some of the world’s top magicians. Images of Larry being sawed in half and Edge pulling a rabbit out of his beanie are popping into our head.

All of this spectacle will come to us fans at great expense to the band. It will cost a reported EUR1million (US$1.3 million) a night to stage the show.

  1. Rumor has it that the tour will not only include a huge sound system, lights, and video screens, but will also feature a stage, instruments, musicians, and and an audience.

  3. I haven’t read the Mirror piece, but is it possible someone (either The Mirror or their source) didn’t mean ACTUAL magicians, but rather people who do things that seem “magical” – like special effects designers?

Having said that, I’d be all for some spectacle.

  5. Hibricc, the direct quote from The Mirror article is:

“…there will be special effects which top magicians are being brought in to choreograph.”

  11. Well sounds like zoo Tv with Earth WInd and Fire stage effects. I guess they want to fly like Britney and disapear and reapear on the B stage.
Cant imagine that type of cost for each gig as that would mean the band would only make $300,000 a night.
But as mentioned above the trick of joining the fan club to get good tickets didnt work so I hope they dont get too magical on us…..
It would be nice to see lots of songs never played live to resurface with most of the regulars thrown out or done in a medely ala prince and his 2 minute versions.
What about an acoustic set with 5 songs???

  13. @ OLDFAN :

A large stadium show easily costs one million dollar these days… You are probably thinking about a million dollar arena show!

Popmart also cost the band a million dollar’s per show! And that was 1997! The Rolling Stones’ Forty Licks stadium show also cost one million dollars…

Anyway; This (stadium) tour being a big production once again means even less room for improv.. So fixed setlists will probably surface again!

Another thing I don’t expect is a concept show like Zoo-TV and Popmart! This is a Rock n Roll record so there will be a Rock n Roll stage… I’m thinking about a Rolling Stones type of stage! Big ass roofless stage with big ass screens and many, MANY lights!

  15. PopMart had “only” US $250K per show in expenses, believe it or not. Also, while stadiums in Europe, the N. American shows are in arenas, so that is a slim margin to net…so I kinda doubt that $1.3 million per night…

  19. @ PopArtist :

Dennis Sheehan (U2’s tourmanager) said in a Popmart special on the Discovery Channel that the show comes down close to a million dollar’s per show! I have this on tape, and watched it a million time… One million dollar per show, all inclusive!
