Brit Award winners Keane are the third band to sign up for the Vertigo Tour with U2 in Europe this summer. The Killers and Snow Patrol had already been confirmed for the opening slot. Keane will support U2 in Munich, Nice and Barcelona.
We’ve also learned Paddy Casey will open up for the band at their first Dublin gig and the fantastic Franz Ferdinand will be on the bill in San Sebastian and Madrid.
D’ya think they’ll be contracting Bloc Party, The Dears, The Stills, The Rapture, The Arcade Fire and The Bravery as well? We think U2 have a cunning plan to get rid of their young competitors, by invoking the ‘U2 opening act curse’. Seriously, try to name a few bands that survived opening up for U2…
YAY! Oh, can they support in Amsterdam too? The last 2 shows? Please? Pretty please with sugar on top?

Oh dear god no, much prefer The Killers.

Caroline, it’s Keane, NOT Kane 😉

Same difference. Not that impressed with the Keanes, Muses, Snow Patrols in this world. Too
safe, too bland. Sorry.

Dunno if this is good or bad news for y’all but Franz Ferdinand was announced on u2.com as the opener for San Sebastian and Madrid. And u2.com also snuck Snow Patrol in as the opener for Amsterdam 2&3, and Paris 2. Paddy Casey will be an additional opener for Croke 1.

Franz Ferdinand are very likeable. Saw them playing a showcase a year and a half ago and their recent Brits appearance was visually impressive. Also a contender for 2004’s best single, with Take Me Out.

Bands that opened for U2 and made it? Hmmm… Pearl Jam, Oasis, Moby and Red Hot Chili Peppers on the Elevation Tour…. yeah. That’s about all I could think of. They survived the curse.

And now we get Paddy Casey too…
The trouble with all the aforementioned bands (imho) is that they all sound very similar. I mean, I like it, but it’s similar. I had an experience like that last year on the Isle of Wight festival, where I think the Delays were followed by Snow Patrol or something, and at some stage I couldn’t tell them apart anymore. It was really boring.
I personally think Franz Ferdinand are working on a higher level than the Killers, Snow Patrol or any of the others though…

I think they should ask The Tears, Brett Anderson and Bernard Butler’s new band.

I can’t really see them going for something like that. I don’t think the two of them have any sort of desire to play for 80k people. But that’s just a hunch.

PJ Harvey opened for U2 on the elevation tour also.
And don’t forget The Pixies opening for U2 on the Zooropa tour.

Hey, don’t forget Big Audio Dynamite II and Public Enemy! Oh, well one out of two, I guess…

I remember a little band from Athens Georgia called REM opening up for U2 in Croke Park in 1985.
They survived the curse.
Now opening up for Michael Jackson – thats a curse.
Kim Wilde – I hear she’s a gardener now.
Kris Kross – Still trying to figure out how to put their clothes on the right way around I guess.
They didn’t make me jump anyway !!!

Isn’t one of their former opening acts going into the Hall of Fame *with* them? 🙂 (That’d be The Pretenders, although by then it was really the Chrissie and Martin show, and the HOF recognition is really for the first couple of albums.)
