Spoilers: What Sun is cooking for the Vertigo tour

If you want to get some idea of what’s going to happen during U2’s upcoming Vertigo tour, you may want to have a look at Bono’s TED prize acceptance speech (linked earlier this week in our //Departures section) in particular the comments TED’s chairman Chris Anderson (Wired Magazine) makes during the event.

We’re not sure if Bono wanted TED’s Chris Anderson to mention this or whether the technology will be implemented at all, he looks a little sour when Anderson talks about what Sun Microsystems have been working on.

We don’t want to give the whole thing away in case you don’t want to be spoiled for the tour, but it involves ‘One’ (the song and the movement), Bono’s first wish and SMS texting.

Read more about Bono’s wishes that the TED organisation will try to grant, read the full transcript of Bono’s speech or watch the whole thing.

Anderson also announced that the orginal owners of www.one.org have donated their domain to the One campaign.

  1. Blimey that post was a bit vague Caroline. I just spent the best part of half an hour trying to spoil myself, hah. For those who want to get to the meat quicker click the long video of Bono’s speech and then forward to quite close to the end.

Sounds like a cool idea anyway, though perhaps not particularly exciting visually (didn’t we see this already on 3rd leg Elevation?).

  3. For those on low-bandwidth / time:

U2 are to add a degree of interactivity to their forthcoming shows in support of the one campaign. When the song one is sung, a five digit code will appear on the video screens. Concert-goers will text their name to the number and it will register them in support of the campaign. After they have sent the number their name will appear on the screens behind U2, much like the names of the WTC victims did during Streets. After the show a petition will be sent to those who signed up.

Glad to see that Bono’s work in Africa is finally getting more involved in the concerts.

  5. We’ve all had quite some possibilities to get used to Bono’s acceptance speeches by now….

But this is probably the best and most moving one I”ve stumbled upon … just above or next to his Harvard speech.

But then again that one doesn’t really count as an acceptance speech ’cause they didn’t give him a prize (Let alone three wishes like these!)

  7. Come to fhink of it, I forgot to mention his commencement speech at the University of Pennsylvania which was great as well…. When he goes on tour speeching I’ll certainly do what I can to get tickets 😉

  9. I think I remember reading about U2 investing in a technology that could deliver the sound to each one in the audience individually, or something like that. Do you remember anything about it?

  11. Yep. The sound was supposed to “zoom” from the sound-system your ears, but nothing ever came of it. I can’t recall which company it was – I think it might have been that one that went bankrupt? At any rate, it was only for Edge’s guitars.
