U2’s Glasgow fans get Interpol thrown into bargain

Just to make sure they wouldn’t be jealous of their peers The Killers, Franz Ferdinand et al, Interpol are now slotted to appear with U2 at Glasgow’s Hampden Park on June 21st.

Let’s hope the New York band will appreciate the Scottish audience more than their Dutch. After a recent show Interpol blasted their Amsterdam fans for not ‘dancing and screaming’ like an audience should. Of course in the dark it is hard to notice you’ve attracted a slightly older crowd than you might be used to. Miaow.

South London hopefuls Athlete (Pardon my ignorance, but… who?) join U2 in Manchester on June 15th and at Twickenham on June 18th.

  1. Interpol are immense. One of the tightest live bands I’ve ever seen, and their first album (and the second, although not so much) are fantastic achievments. A Very Important Band, IMO.

  3. I agree, sonically they are tremendous. I’m not sure I like their stage act (or lack of it). I don’t know if they *are* arrogant, but that’s what it feels like. They didn’t draw me in on stage. (Have seen them twice.) We can’t all be Bono, but you can at least attempt to connect with your audience. I think a U2 crowd will expect a little of that.

Not sure what to make of the bassplayers quasi Nazi look either. It isn’t funny and I’m sure it’s not serious. Maybe it’s adolescent. He should meet up with Prince Harry. But anyway, great music, great albums.

  5. LOL… Cant say I have ever heard of them.
Least if it was one of the other bands I would know some of their stuff.

As for Athlete, well they just sound like Coldplay. They are currently getting a lot of ari time and press over here with their recnet single Wires and their new album which is getting rave reviews. Cant see way myself.

Least if we had Snow Patrol I would know some of their songs. 🙂

  7. I agree that Interpol’s music is great (especially their first album.) Seeing them live recently though, I have a few comments:
    1. they have no stage presence or crowd interaction (besides a bit by bassist Carlos D!)
    2. though they are very tight musically (live sounded just like the albums )many of their songs have a similar sound (not as much variety)
    3. the lead singer is extremely shy & not a people person/friendly (based on my hanging out in a room with the band after a show) wearing a hoodie ala popmart bono.

  9. you get Interpol?! get OUT! *comically shoves everyone in Elaine-like manner* meanwhile, here in the antipodes there has been no tour announcement, leading to much press speculation that U2 aren’t touring Australia at all. AGAIN. where’s the beef?

It isn’t Nazi, it is “Early 20th Century Eastern-Europe military chic”, to quote NME. I quite like it, I’d love a gunholster. They’re one of those love them or hate them bands, live, they aren’t going to change – I think their style suits the music perfectly, vocally he’s reaching out but unable to connect and the bass is so detatched from the guitars. Makes sense in me head 🙂

  13. Athlete are amazing by the way. Interpol may have a good sound but their songs are all pretty similar – seeing them support coldplay so been trying to get in to them – Athlete however have a brilliant style with very passionate music and clear vocals – check them out!!!

  15. Well, don’t forget that Paul was stoned crazy at
this show. I attended the show, and even met him
at the afterparty. And it was one of the worst
    shows they’ve ever did.

    :\
