U2 and Paul McCartney kick off Live8 in London

Releasing white doves during their set, U2 came and rocked Hyde Park — a thrilling start to today’s concerts. The band played ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ with Paul McCartney, ‘Beautiful Day’, ‘Vertigo’ and ‘One’. Contrary to the rumours, the band did not wear the Sgt Pepper outfits. Instead a brass quartet was dressed up as the Beatles.

We’ve got a ton of screen grabs for you to peruse.

  1. Ho-hum…

MTV coverage in the U.S. doesn’t even begin for another few hours, and the AOL stream only works on PCs.

  3. Wow what a great event. U2 and Paul were amazing – Historic really. I have a question though – Why the heck didn’t MTV give us a live show from the get-go? 20 years ago, we saw Live Aid in the US from beginning to end almost – It wasn’t even on cable – it was broadcast. I’m sure Sir Bob did everything he could – But MTV or some other network should have stepped up for such an important cause. The US hasn’t seen U2’s entire set yet!

  5. MTV U.S. drops the ball again. They interrupt songs to go to stupid interviews. Cutting the end of Green Day to ask Jimmie Fallon what he thinks? Give me a break. MTV didn’t even show U2’s set, and they talked all over the Black Eyed Peas. Are these guys completley stupid?

  7. BBC did the same actually, they went to a stupid backstage interview right in the middle of REM’s set.

  9. MTV/VH1’s coverage in the United States is so horrible that I had to stop watching it. They’re hardly showing any performances at all. It’s really disappointing.

  11. Looks like they networks wont let us hear the music. I was so disappointed because live aid I listen to each band 3-4 song sets. Recorded most of them. Wonder if the bands didnt want there live sets recorded via digital so they are breaking it up. I am wasting an 8 hour tape on vhs just to catch 1 song.

  13. CTV in Canada is great. They played all of U2’s set, including “Sgt. Pepper,” and are actually letting full songs to be played instead of cutting to other things. They’re focussing on the Canadian performances now that the Barrie show is on, but are covering other places as well.

Good stuff. REM was brilliant too.

  15. HAHA, I’m watching the show in Czech Republic – from the entire beginning to the final end.. no interruption, interviews or advertising.. pure music!!

  17. U2? Hmm … I vagely remember seeing them, half a day ago! Been watching the BBC since the start, excellent coverage! Their only screwup was to start an interview in the middle of R.E.M… and I believe they didn’t show Mandela either.
But now that the London concert is over they’re showing highlights (complete songs!) from Philly and the other concerts for the next couple of hours. Awesome!

Sgt. Pepper was a great way to start this concert, One was pretty brilliant too.

  19. ABC is showing a two-hour version right now (7:00 Central Time). They’ve already shown alot of stuff that MTV/VH1 didn’t show (Coldplay singing “In My Place,” for example). I hope they show “One” and/or “Vertigo.”

  21. Anyone else find it quite sickening that iTMS are profiteering off LIVE 8… off a free event. I know Geldoff doesn’t want a cut – nor does Bono (didn’t he once say “you’ve given us enough cash!”) McCartney is a hack and doesn’t deserve a thing either. So – yeah, I just think its wrong the iTMS features a big link to the story and playlists (of which 1 in 5 songs were actually played) download them now for 99p a pop. Makes me sick.

  23. The artists are not profiting from the Live 8 downloads at iTMS.

From iTMS: “Get the music and help Make Poverty History — proceeds benefit Live 8 and the fight for the future of Africa.”

  25. “Proceeds” – so after iTunes pay off the license they bought to use the music, they take a cut i’d expect to cover bandwidth and then – sure the money goes straight to LIVE 8… woops- Live 8 who “Don’t Want Your Money”. Oh well, at least iTMS will get a couple of thousand extra users after the BBC plug on Johnathon Ross’ part.

I’m sorry, maybe the extra cash (after paying live 8 for the rights, which in turn paid for the events… can’t quibble with that) will go to an NGO, and that’d be nice – and I’d certainly support it, buy those tracks up. But its not – its about marketing, and Product Placement and its pretty shameful.

Apple could afford to give the money, pay for the rights and give away the songs, that would in the spirit of Live 8 – getting the message out there. THis shouldn’t have anything to do with money, right?

  27. Maybe I’m just an optimist or something, or maybe ignorant to boot, but how do you know Apple didn’t do just that?

I’m getting a little bit fed up with everyone being so bloody judgemental. Geldog is only in it for the attention, U2 only to promote their tour, and hey, iTunes is only there to make money…

    ..whatever.

  29. U2 were great, at least Sgt. Pepper and Beautiful Day, but MTV…uh, they did better 20 years ago.

Quite odd seeing P. Diddy & Alicia Keys doing acne medicine commercials while we’re being made aware of the emergency in Africa. Hawking skin cream while doing Live 8 says a lot about our culture.

Best Moment: The Unforgettable Face, that 20 something girl who was pictured near death at Live Aid 20 years ago, so beautiful… introduce her to the G8 men!

  31. Anything Apple did with iTunes was done under contract with Live 8, therefore complaints should be directed at Live 8, not Apple. Since Live 8 is who would be hurt (if at all) and they aren’t complaining – even happily allowing it, why would anyone complain?

I teared up on that woman walking out before Madonna, but so did Madonna.

  33. And the ITMS is not the only outlet offering this digital download as well, so please extend your critisism to the corporate world as a whole…just trying to do their bit like our rockstar-friends are…

  35. God bless AOLmusic.com!
MTV-us is just the worst, I can’t stand how bad they are. But more importantly, did anyone else notice that Bono’s green guitar he uses for “One” has the line “The Goal is Soul” written on it. i have no idea if that’s new but i never noticed it before on the elevation dvd’s or anything… on a sidenote, did anyone else wish they would’ve played the vertigo tour version “Elevation” just to see thousands of people yell “el-e-va-tion!” during the stripped down first two choruses?

  37. It’s a Gretsch Irish Falcon, it dates back to the Elevation tour… They have one of them in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.

  39. I thought Bono’s Gretsch was a “Country Club” in Cadalac Green.

George Harrison had one… maybe Bono bought his – oh, it was all such a long time ago, there was a story of giving, or buying… No doubt someone can correct me. Anyway- Bono played the Gretsch with the Corrs – when I say ‘played’ I’m stretching it… What a bootiful instrument anyways.

“U2Fan” the files are out there.

  41. U got it wrong elmo, U2 have done absoliutely WONDERFUL music besides Sgt Peppers. Also, i have to agree with watts4u2, that girl is a perfect example of what they have the power to do for a whole continent.
New Zealands coverage was EXCELLENT, we saw all of U2, and got around 3 songs from all bands shown. One problem… well, it wasnt really a problem considering, but they cut off Simple plan half way through their first song to show Nelson Mandela, but i can live with that.
