‘Fares, please!’: Bono conducts Dutch crowd

Cats

Second night, all right. Only few changes to the set (Out of Control), and a slightly younger audience who were more appreciative of the support acts The Music and Snow Patrol.

Bono told a long fairy tale about an alien scientist called The Edge, who came to earth on a space ship, playing four notes (The intro to Miracle Drug) that meant ‘Ik hou van Holland’ (I love Holland).

At the end of an evening full of smiles and mutual appreciating, Bono donned his cap for All Because of You and called out ‘Fares, please’.

All aboard the Vertigo juggernaut.

  1. And they left out All I Want Is You ;-(

The spaceship story was weird: “Edge is not a human-being, Adam, Larry and I were playing on the street and down came this space ship with Edge in it….it had four words on the side: Ik hou van Holland….”

    ???

  3. Seems like a weird story indeed. And how can the beginning 4 notes of Miracle Drug ever sound like “Ik hou van Holland” which is 5 syllables?
    LOL

  5. geez, suspend your imaginations a little people. B is a bit eccentric with the stories, but it beats the same ol’ speech every night, no?…….

  7. Wow, what a show. It was incredible from where was. Bono was totally playing the first few rows, picking up on my new Finnish queueing friend’s Lou Reed shirt and throwing in some Sweet Jane lyrics. Also picked up on me, and garbled the lyrics of the second Vertigo to refer to something I said, and struck a pose, which really rocked :-]

He completely missed the mic when blindfolded, and AJ had to jump in to set him straight, which took more persuasion than you’d think!

Later AJ had to save him again when Bono was left without mic, and hence speechless… though, trying to mouth. Lots of un-earplugging tonight, and jesting with “How is the sound”. Personally, I found it a whole lot better, even during the support acts, so whoever tweaked that, thanks. Bono also went “Can we open the roof now” or something to that effect during one of the songs.

At one point he brought a little boy up during the gig and set him at the corner with Larry’s feet. I think he completely forgot about him then though, and only remembered when he almost walked into him when leaving just before the first encore. He was sweet redirecting the kid back into the crowd though.

So yea, great night. We went straight back to the queue, so I’m a bit bummed right now. I’ll try to upload some of yesterdays pics, but it may have to wait. No camera tonight either, I just want to go wild :-]

Apparently I got my pic in the paper with Bono as well, or so I was informed by text message during the Wake Up intro, by a colleague of all people. Won’t hear the end of that for another 6 months, at least. Doh!

    Pics coming up…

  9. A Great and Hot night and show indeed – even better than the first night though only few changes in the setlist .
Band working hard onstage and Energy onstage was lifting the show and feeding the crowd that really got into the show. 2nd Vertigo ended in a short extended version.
Fingers crossed they blow that roof tonight! An Electric Storm would be what we need.

  11. I think Bono may be referring to the four notes played by the spaceship in First Encounters of the Third Kind.

Indeed a great show and great atmosphere (the audience went nuts!). Although there were no surprised in the setlist.

  13. Can anyone tell me what song was played as they were coming up the stage? Before they actually started playing (vertigo)?

  15. Didn’t call in sick. I just took a little break of queueing to have a shower this morning :-]

Ralph, the song is by Arcade Fire and is called Wake Up.
