U2 and Blige’s performance of “One” for Shelter from the Storm: A Concert for the Gulf Coast was one of the most moving and unique performances of the band’s career. Blige provided the perfect accompaniment with her soulful vocal interpretation of the heartfelt lyrics.
U2exit.com, thegoalissoul.cjb.net, and Zootopia.de are hosting video of the performance. Be sure you watch it and donate to the Red Cross hurricane relief fund if you can.

oh my fucking god, give that woman – whatever she wants.

She is amazing. I normally hate it when other people interpret U2 songs, but Mary J. Blige just took a great song to another level. Kudos to her. (The only other U2 cover I can palate is Elvis Costello’s Please.)
I’ve already donated to the Red Cross – just wish I had more to give.

sorry that i don’t share your same admiration. there are songs that i like by mjb and those that i like by u2. i think that if it were my party, it would be okay to hear a duet. but, for some reason, i was looking or hoping for something more. i love mjb. i do not find her inspirational, however hard that she tries. i just think that she is great. she does what she does on the same scale, regardless. no less greater than before. however, i was hoping to hear from u2.

Wow.
Would love to see that released as a single. Wishful thinking is bliss ๐

One of the things that impressed me about Mary J. Blige’s performance was her knowledge of the song. She seemed to really know it inside and out. She sang it as if it were her own song.
Blige breathed life back into the song, which has been slowly dying during the Vertigo Tour. I hope her performance will inspire the band to perform that song on tour like it deserves to be performed. It is a great song.
U2.com’s story about it says the band were “stunned by the power of her performance”…like most of us.

Incredible. You’re exactly right, Cindy – The song was way inside her – Bono let her take it for a reason. The best performence of One I have ever heard. And I couldn’t name a MJB song if you paid me…

Damn, that brought tears to my eyes.
The lines that she came in were rather striking to me… it’s amazing what this song can mean.
Did I disappoint you?
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without
Well it’s too late, tonight
To drag the past out into the light
We’re one, but we’re not the same
We get to carry each other
Carry each other
One can see this as the increasing outrage of citizens at the incompetent co-ordination (despite heroic individual efforts) of the government at all levels dealing with this thing… and how many people there had to take their survival (for better or worse) into their own hands.
And my god, these lines (regarding some of politician backslapping and photo shoots):
Have you come here for forgiveness?
Have you come to raise the dead?
Have you come here to play Jesus?
To the lepers in your head
Did I ask too much, more than a lot?
You gave me nothing, now it’s all I got
PS – I wonder if we’ll be hearing those extended ones/oohs in between verses next leg. ๐ I could see easily her contributing to Pride as well. Streets I’m not so sure about – but hey those songs are already in the encore, and not to be politically incorrect but she’d fit the current context they’re being presented in.

I disagree. I found the performance to be very odd sounding, at time she seemed very pitchy. This is not the best performance of One. Most I talk to also say it was kind of boring without Bono singing most parts.
Anyway I hope to see them on tonight.

I think its outrageous someone would use this forum to point fingers at the government. This was a foul up at the city and state level. The gov. doesn’t and cannot control and govern each state. Get off your fixation of hatting the government, instead blame local officals. Blanco and that dumb-a## mayor in New Orleans, who btw has not political experience – not even a high school diplomia.

As far as I’m concerned, Carl can say whatever he wants as long as he relates it to U2, which is exactly what he did.

It’s not the first time she’s sung that song.
Back in 2003 when Bono got that Musicares award, she performed One.
It was very passionate.

Honestly, I was bored by the song seleection as soon as I heard the first strums and I was not pleased to hear MJB sing most of it. I’ve already donated (literally until it hurts) to both the Red Cross first and then later more still to the Salvation Army… so I mainly tuned in to see the U2 performance. Never got to see that. I got to see MJB screeching (in my opinion) and that’s not what I tuned in to see. I was at the Musicares event, too, and I was equally unimpressed with the performance then, but some of the people I attended with loved the performance then, too. So it’s a matter of taste.
But (speaking as a trained singer) Jim is absolutely right — she was very pitchy at times. Alicia Keys, however, was damn near perfection.
Oh well, it was to raise money and not really to entertain. So if MJB’s U2-backed performance brought in even 10 cents more than if she hadn’t performed with them, then it was a successful appearance as far as I am concerned.

P.S. I would like to add that the pitchy comment is the ONLY thing that I agree with in Jim’s comments, that’s for sure. Pfff.

“I think its outrageous someone would use this forum to point fingers at the government”.. lol, what next, it’s outrageous that a band should use music as a platform to critisize a government? oh please.

i didn’t care for the performance at all. at one point she wasn’t even in the same key as the song. mjb can bleat out her own tunes all she wants, but that killed the song. i hope to god this doesn’t continue with the third leg.
and for another two cents, the ‘blame game’ for katrina is tiresome. energy should be focused on helping, not finger-pointing.

“The best performence of One I have ever heard”
Come on! It was a nice version, but the best version ever done? Please!! It’s U2’s song and U2’s Zooropa version still is the best one EVER! PERIOD!

I must have missed something because I really expected alot of negative comments about the performance. I even watched it again trying to enjoy it, but it did not happen for me. ;( It was awful, bloody awful. Mary J. Blige is ok in my book and I have tix to both U2 shows in Atlanta in November and was at ZOO, PopMart, and ATYCLB tours but it pained me to listen to this performance. Not to mention, I live in Mobile, AL on the AL/Miss state line 30 mins from Biloxi. Maybe I’m getting old? ๐

I quite like MJB, but didn’t care for this performance much. I liked the energy and feeling, but not so much the tone of voice and the ubiquitous melisma. I do however agree that the song has lost its whammy on this tour and bringing in another singer, or just any change at all is a good thing.

Chris,
I guess you are right, Bono is getting bashed on CNN today and by rapper Mos Def for not standing up for New Orleans. Its amazing how us U2 fans will say this guy, Mos, is an idiot for writing a rap song about and how Bono is a “It’s enough to make you holler out/Like where the f**k is Sir Bono ”
Thats a quote if you couldn’t figure that out yet. Yes the mighty Bono being bashed and now we’ll call this guy an idiot, yet Bono will have Kanye West tour with them. Bono wake up – U2 fans don’t like rap or hip hop, like hip hop fans aren’t into U2. BIG BIG mistake!
Its a joke to me that this clown is opening up for U2, I mentioned this in work and people were laughing that they would allow an IDIOT like this open for a class act like U2.
See you all in NY for all the shows, I can’t wait.

Speak for yourself, Jim, this fan does like hip hop and rap and thinks Kanye West is a class act too.

Yay typekey ate like 5 of my posts and this is on the archives page now, but what the heck. When I said all levels of government, I meant all levels of government. Federal, State, Local. I wasn’t trying to make a political point. I agree that Bianco screwed up (more so than Nagin in my opinion), but that doesn’t make inept behavior by the FEMA and DHS go away. I don’t have a fixation on hating “the government” nor do I have one on blaming certain parts of it to deny the responsibility of others. http://www.dhs.gov/dhspublic/theme_home2.jsp
“In the event of a terrorist attack, natural disaster or other large-scale emergency, the Department of Homeland Security will assume primary responsibility on March 1st for ensuring that emergency response professionals are prepared for any situation.”
http://www.fema.gov/nims/ “Developed by the Secretary of Homeland Security at the request of the President, the National Incident Management System (NIMS) integrates effective practices in emergency preparedness and response into a comprehensive national framework for incident management. The NIMS will enable responders at all levels to work together more effectively to manage domestic incidents no matter what the cause, size or complexity.”
If you still think anyone who thinks that “Katrina exposed serious problems in our response capability at all levels of government” has a fixation of hatred against the government -check out who the quote is ascribed to: http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/12634247.htm
