  5. Arcade Fire was a great opening band in Montreal. Fabulous, in fact. I can understand anyone wishing to see Arcade Fire with U2 in 2006.

Kanye West is a very interesting artist. He’s an idea man, much like Bono. Give him a chance to impress you.

  7. Europe had some greats acts like Franz Ferdinand, Ash, Kaiser Chiefs. Perhaps some of these British bands can make it down under…

p.s. for the outdoors gigs u2 usually have 2 support bands so there’s hope.

  9. Threads like this depress me, because it reminds me that half of U2’s audience is forty-something baby boomers afraid of change. Both in terms of actual age, and in terms of mentality.

  11. Trevor: why does everyone wish to hear Arcade Fire then?
Im 22 and i think Kanye West stinks, and i would have thought the same thing 5 years ago when i first started listening to U2. Arcade Fire is a brilliant NEW band on the other hand…

  13. Holy crap people, climb out of your box and give stuff a chance. And you missed my jab– you have the mentality of a forty-something. The cool kids rock out to whatever opening act is on. Complainers are never hip. It’s U2’s house, so you’ve got to respect your hosts. If Bono thinks Kanye is cool enough to give a chance, maybe you should give ’em a chance.

And yes, the Arcade Fire was amazing. I saw them in Ottawa. But the whole point of an opening act is to be exposed to something different. I’ve fallen in love with many opening acts that I’d previously cared little for.

In brief: people whine too much.

  15. Objectivity is subjective.
I saw Damian Marley open up and the crowd reaction was LAME… Part of that is due to the typical “not being the main act”. Part of that is people who can’t relate to the people on stage. Most people who write here would have to admit that most of the people at the shows wouldn’t know Arcade Fire from Mission of Burma (I myself got into Pixies 12 years after seeing them open for U2 many times, for example). I’m only now getting into Buckwheat Zydeco! Frankly I’m open minded but Kanye’s no P.E. P.E wasn’t about P.E. Inc., but maybe Chuck D. now wishes they were…..Would it have been a great time if people had gotten into Damian’s gig? Absolutely- but that’s not the audience. Does anyone think that people at the J.Geils shows cared about the opening act??

  17. For the record, I’m 22 and I think it’s awesome that Kanye West is going to be supporting U2 down here in Australia. It’s not everyday that such a brilliant talent gets to showcase his work in front of 50,000 people.

I wonder if there was such a stink when Public Enemy and Big Audio Dynamite II opened for U2 during the Zoo TV tour? 😛

It still surprises me that there are so many U2 fans who wish that the band would stay on the same course forever (whether it be musically, or choosing what type of opening act they have)

  19. Trevor,Bono is 4 years younger than me and his musical tastes have never really impressed. Just expressing my opinion, as are you.
I’ve seen U2 13 times in Melbourne and in the main have been disappointed by the acts who opened for them.
If Bono thinks Kanye is cool enough to give a chance thats his problem!

  21. Out of pure curiosity, I wonder if the “Kanye yuck, opening acts yuck” people are the same ones that hated the whole Popmart period.

    I’m conducting an informal survey.

Also, life is too short, etc.

  23. Hey, I am a 40-something editor of U2log.com and I like Kanye West. I like Chopin too. Sue me.

  25. Oh sure, Caroline. Start pulling rank. 😉 On the topic of new acts to check out, take a listen to She Wants Revenge. Though from L.A., they sound like they’re from the U.K. Think Joy Division, New Order, The Cure, Depeche Mode, etc. Only an EP out thus far (full album soon but likely already “available” on your favorite file sharing network). Worth a look…

  27. Anything that continues to challenge me as a listener…I welcome. Believe Caroline might just agree with me on that :o)

LOVED when B.A.D. II & Public Enemy opened the ZooTV tour, even if our little group of family and friends seemed to be only ones enjoying ourselves (just meant Flav interacted with us most of the time ;o) I’m sure I’m not the only one to realise the irony in P.E.’s performance of “Don’t Believe THE HYPE”.

Kind of like when (one time opening act) The Waterboys would play “I Will Not Follow” or more recently Arcade Fire playing “Streets” prior to taking the stage.

    BTW…Happy Holidays to ALL!!!

  29. For the record as well, I deferentiate between mental and actual forty-somethings. I like to believe you can be youthful and idealistic forever.

Or at least that’s what Viagra’s taught me.

Because it’s Christmas I’ll forgive the haters. 😉

u2vox: I’ve heard of ’em, but haven’t HEARD them. I guess now I actually have to go listen to them. Sounds delicious.

  31. Kanye, Kanye. I was defending the poor, defenseless openers. Silly goose! I’m perfectly fine, thanks.
