Bono does his best Junior Birdman impression in an alternate video for “Original of the Species.” The video is premiering on AOL Music today. Watch it and tell us and AOL Music if you prefer the alternate video to the original “Original” video.

  1. hmm, both are quite good, I think. like the first one a lot better, though, particular the mix between the android looking head and the high pitched whammy guitar, fits perfectly together, creating something very special, not unlike the mood to “all is full of love” produces.
also the boy’s heads, as the whole plot, are placed better in the first clip. also prefer edge singing towards the end, and the way he’s looking up, you know he’s adressing it to his daughter, and that gives me chills.

  3. I like this one better. It reminds me of the hot Bono One video too, and for me that’s a good thing. I really did not like the first version with the creepy androids, so this is a vast improvement.

  5. well, thinking about it, I’d reckon a mix of the two versions would be the best thing. less android stuff but also a little less bono. the way the band comes in towards the end is just so great…

  7. bono looks nice, but overall i’m not loving this one as much as the original one. but christopher, my friend, please explain, how is the hot bono “one” video not a good thing?

  9. I get massive script errors in IE, after installing the plugin it tells me I need to install an older version of firefox (i’m running 1.5 – i suppose it wants 1.4) and the site doesn’t even work in opera let alone the media. Running xp sp2 w/ updates.

    Not impressed with AOL Music.

  11. Maybe Christopher just isn’t in touch with his feminine side? I, however, would be forever indebted to any person that somehow gets their hands on all the unreleased footage from that video shoot and gives me a copy… A girl can dream.

  13. I like the first version so much better than this one, this is just… the Bono-show, and he’s not very good at ‘acting’ and the playback-lipsync-thing. The first version had a lot more emotion and was just beautiful, this didn’t convince me for a minute, no matter how many pregnant bellies were in it.

  15. To be honest I think both videos are boring and I really wouldn’t want to watch either again. The song itself is fantastic though. Is there a release date for the single? thanks

  17. I prefer the first one, much more interesting to see a futuristic image that doesn’t automatically peg it as a U2 video until you see the band members….I suppose this new one complements the first, but it’s rather dull compared to the previous one. I never understand why the first video ends on an image of Edge..thanks for the insight Bernhard, but for casual viewer it doesn’t make much sense, it should have been another view of the “starchild”….poor Adam only gets a snippet of screen time in the first one, as is often the case, Larry only a few momements more. First one still better.

  19. Going from one of the most innovative and best U2 videos to one of the most boring… not a good thing.

  21. yes, as much as I love videos that feature Bono, neither video blew me away like past videos have. When I first heard this song, I thought “that would make a great video!” and pictured this really big production. They could have pulled out all the stops, but instead they chose to do something simple and easy. Just not what I’d expect for a song that has potential to be a huge hit.

  23. Think I have to agree with “old Fogey” C-:
The last best vid they did was All I Want is You. However, Electrical Storm aint far behind, wot with all that Larry smooching (who would’ve throught?!!) But of course, any u2 vid is pretty good, goes without saying…
BTW, where can I watch the first version of Origin????

  25. How about staring at the sun!! that’s an incredible video or please two great videos that people seem to forget.

  27. This could have been incredible, but is really quite artless and contrived (and it hurt my eyes after 2 minutes).

How is it that a band can make such increasingly great music, and yet the videos have become so bland since Pop? (with the obvious exception of ‘Sometimes You Can’t Make It’). Surely, after two ‘return to form albums’ and accompanying ‘safe’ stage shows, it’s time for these guys to get back near the cutting edge?

Does anyone have the number for Corbijn, Gondry, Romanek or Sednaoui?

  29. I like it because it IS different than their previous videos. Why does everyone insist upon “cutting edge”…when it would just be rehash anyway.

This isn’t rehash. The band looks great, and the way the woman is intertwined throughout is genius.

    9/10

  31. Which “Sometimes” video exactly? There were . . . like 3.

Uh, I don’t mind the first version. It’s cool to see rock bands still using really simple, but relatively innovative ideas for film clips, instead of just flashing half-naked girls round the screen. But the new one bores me a little bit. Don’t hit me, but Bono’s not my fav member of the band, and as much as I liked his One video, I still enjoy clips more when the whole band is more involved.

By the way, for the person who asked, you can download the first version (I’m pretty sure it’s the first) on http://www.u2emporium.com at the HTDAAB downloads section. WMV format.

  33. I never thought I’d say this, but that was just too much Bono. Bono and Bono having an “earnest-off.” Pew.

I expect they’ll come and strip me of my U2 membership card shortly…

  35. Thanks for the attitude Sam, but there is actually only one promo video for ‘Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own’, directed by Phil Joanou in Dublin, December 2004. For me, it’s a moving and authentic experience every time I see it.

Of course I forgot Electrical Storm, which is truly a classic video and one of the band’s best. But the various promos for Beautiful Day, Elevation, Stuck in a moment, Walk On, Vertigo, All because of you and City of Blinding lights are simply mediocre. This band has unlimited resources and can attract the world’s best talent, but they’ve made some pretty shitty videos over the last few albums. Look at a band like REM, and they’ve never made a bad video – every one is a classic. I just want to see something as inspired and artful as the music.

  37. i actually think the vids for this album are all good. especially the sometimes vid. hit me if you want. i can take it….but then again, my fave u2 vid is discotheque, so i wouldn’t be a normal one, now would i?

  39. yes, too much B…some quick shots of the boys mixed in would be nice. some live shots of this song would be nice and could be mixed in with some clips as well from the little one B brought on stage during sbs.

another thought i got a bit creeped on is the “woman”. i think some of the shots are a younger woman and some of them at the end look like larry from the one videos…yikes!

I f’n love this song and i would like to do a quick tangent post…they need a better judge on the song order for releasing…does paul mc make that choice?

    going back in time…
    One Tree Hill
Please should never have been the last release and we all know that album need a few more months of baking in the studio anyway…
Walk on should have followed BD
    order for this lp…
Vertigo was perfect, much like wowy was for JT…but the 2nd release should have been sycmioyo
then md, then aboy, then cobl or even crumbs…

The next lp should be bled throught their website with 15 second hooks for each song and let your fans decide…
If the band decides the release order than, man ya’all need to talk with the people that love you more than the people that get paid by you 🙂

  41. Just wondering in reading some of the posts about how the band hasn’t done a good video since “All I want is You” what happened to the good ole reliable videos from ‘Zooropa’. Obviously there was the video for “Numb” which was the last video they did to make a stir outside of their core fan base, but beyond that, the videos for “Lemon” and “Stay” were outstanding. Personally, music aside, I think that was their best period for videos.

  43. “Stay”, “Please”, “Sometimes…”, and dare I say even “City of Blinding Lights” did not leave me cold at all. They are, personally, probably four out of my top five videos of the band. And I’ve seen them all.

Second video should have been much more grand. We all know they could manage that. First video was great.

  45. I like the the first Original of the Species clip. Whoever made the comment about half naked girls gyrating around in other clips is spot on. I’m sick of all that crap and I find this clip refreshing with its lack of dancers, costume changes and pyrotechnics!

Also what about Mysterious Ways, Stay, Staring at the sun and Sometimes you can’t make it on your own (the one with Bono and the van)? I really like those clips alot. 🙂

  47. Alison, that was Stuck In A Moment (with the van), which was WAY better than the American video with the football game (mostly shot in Europe, ironically).

One that nobody’s mentioned is a personal favorite of mine, “If God Will Send His Angels” from Pop. A simple concept from Phil Joanou, rivetingly executed IMO.

  49. ok, have finally seen this. thankyou, work server!

    1. larry mullen looks the oldest of all the U2s. what. the fuck?

    2. this song is unremarkable. Bono does do that cool popping eye look though.

  51. Hm, isn’t that Larry in drag in there? Only saw it once on AOL while being at work…I’d even bet on it. Of course I could be wrong here.

  53. Please, Lemon.. some of U2’s best videos.

This decade has been pretty weak. Unfortunately I don’t know where to see the full version of the original OOTS, which seems at the very least not completely boring.
