  3. What’s the deal with them cutting off Larry after they won Album of the Year?! I couldn’t believe it.

  5. yeah, bad version of One…. but what a night for the boys!! too bad the TV choped the speech of the album of the year (larry?). (Off topic: terrific performance of Paul Mc Cartney…)

  7. Who was that blonde sitting between Bono and Larry? And I realized I’ve never seen a picture of Steve Lillywhite, ever. He doesn’t look anything like I expected he would. Kind of looks like an ass, to be honest.

  9. Nice win for U2 but Kanye got robbed. Looked like they were genuinely shocked to win top prize.

“One” with Mary J. was a treat but the true highlight was Springsteen with Sam Moore. Pure magic.

  11. Lian Lunson, who directed the recent Leonard Cohen documentary that the band is in, was the blonde between Bono and Larry. Was surprised to see Adam’s gal, Susie Smith, there, I think it’s the first time I’ve ever seen her with Adam at one of these big award dos, he usually goes stag.

Anyway, great going guys! Can it get any better?? 🙂

  13. The guys must be so happy. A great album and tour, 5 grammys, plus Bono is getting much recognition for his ‘non-day-job’ activities.

  15. Glenn – sometimes Springsteen puts on a benefit show around Christmas in Asbury Park. I saw it in 2003; Sam Moore was the special guest. He and Bruce sang Soul Man, I Thank You and Something Is Wrong With My Baby, and Sam also joined Bruce for My City of Ruins, turning it into a gospel song. It was incredible. If you can, try to track down some downloads or a boot – definitely an amazing show.

  17. Anyone know what BONO said after the 1st award they won on the televised portion missed his speech; I saw what Edge had to say any help please.
    Thanks
    🙂

  19. I’m wondering about what Mike asked. For me as a fan I was really interested in they way Bono was acting. He looked as though he was definately under some sort of influence. He also looked as though he was walking right up to the line of letting loose about something during his first “joining the circus” thank you speech. He was clearly upset about “The smoke machine incident”, but he definately appeared to be a bit “adjusted” No?

  21. No, I’ve seen Bono under the influence at the Grammys before. He talked and talked and talked and shoved Edge away from the microphone and talked some more. I think they were all nervous. Bono seemed to be acting the same way he did on Conan O’Brien: sort of subdued, like he was so nervous that he just clammed up. Like when he was talking about the circus thing, it was like he didn’t know what to say. *Gasp!* If anything, I’d say that he’s on anxiety medication. Xanax, maybe?

  23. check the stocks i’m in detox, take a pill to make it stop…all i want is a picture of you…

he seems less “right” when ali is not in the room~

  25. whoever said U2 didn’t expect to win the big prize is way off the mark. I tivo’d it and Bono is preening his hair as they are announcing the candidates…. getting ready to go accept the big prize. You’ve got to believe that veterans like U2 know what awards they’re going to win before it’s announced. I don’t buy that Bono was “surprised” at all. He knew they were winning.

Secondly, that’s probably why he was so mashed last night. After their performance Bono got more and more incoherant as the night went on. What was the deal with that “circus” speech? Adam and Larry’s expressions were priceless.

Overall a great night for U2 but Bono should have laid off the drink a little until after the show.

  27. Bono seemed a bit off for the acceptances, but watching the post-show backstage CNN.com interview, he seems perfectly fine. So…I dunno.

  29. One was awful. MJB wasn’t in tune at all, but apparently that was the theme of the evening (Sir Paul, Coldplay, that Linkin Park lead singer, etc.). Drunk Bono made up for the lack of musical ability.

Drunk Bono just makes me so happy.

  31. nah, they were all just nervous…adam twitching the ring around his finger like he was ready to yank it off. bobo fumbling like he does in front of large crowds…
he is amazing one on one and that is why he does so well with the politicians and even fans because he does treat us as one…
when it comes to the grammy’s and being in front of your peers…NOT EASY!! He looked more like a man, a band leader hoping that everyone in the industry believes they deserved the award.

I don’t mind the drink, but that wasn’t the case last night. I think it was a normal nerve.
What i don’t like is the white powder folks that were in attendance. do we remember some bono speeches in the early days ( 84 or so ) that the teeth were gritting a bit too much and the pupils were a little dialated?
Remeber the bloated amnesty international days? the Jesus days of Sun City?
Interesting when Bad was released… timing wise for me personally. so i am not in judgement here.

We all have our bad times…that song rescued me i don’t know about the rest of you…
i was 21 when that album came out and the lyrics helped me let go of a bad phase of my life.

Congrats to the band i saw as a teen in 1979 and wait every moment for another ride~

  33. well the thing with the circus and being the clown could have easily referred to his political engagement, and how it “interferes” with his day job….I think t-bamn was making fun of himself, a little self criticism maybe, but I doubt many people in the audience got the hint.

  35. I took a lot of grief over the last year and a half from family and friends for standing in line at 6am for the heart at several shows; for all the playing of the HTDAAB album; the t-shirts, etc.

Im almost forty and the father of two. They thought I was nuts. They just didn’t understand,

My critics were very quiet on Thursday :>

  37. the level of presumptuousness in some of the comments here regarding bono’s coherence is comical. i’d think anyone who’s followed the band for a while would not have seen anything out of the ordinary in bono being the “mad irishman” for a few moments during his speeches. get a grip.
