U2 shoot video with Mary J. Blige

From Willie’s diary at U2.com’s members only section we learn that while the band were in Mexico, they shot a video for ‘One’ with Mary J. Blige:

“I wandered for a while before flagging down a cab and heading to an old theatre in the same part of town where U2 were shooting a video with Mary J. Blige. Mary’s version of ‘One’ is on her current album, so I’m guessing it’ll be a single, hence the video. I wasn’t involved in the shoot professionally, but it’s always interesting to see how the other half lives. Paul Hunter was directing, whilst Jeff Cronenweth and team were busy filling the theatre so full of smoke that it became almost impossible to see across the room. Looked pretty cool on camera, though.”

Willie’s diary also makes mention of a 3D concert shoot in Buenos Aires on March 1 and 2 for the production of an IMAX film. Atu2.com have more details:

“According to Definition Magazine, they’re using gear provided by Pace Technologies, which has Titanic, The Abyss, and several other Hollywood blockbusters on its portfolio. Also involved in the production is 3ality, a company which specializes in 3D viewing … get this … that doesn’t require any special eyewear.”

Enquiring minds want to know, is Hamish Hamilton involved? Because fast cuts + zooming + 3D = yay?

  1. Is there anyway we can get a message to U2 that hamish sucks? I will not buy a u2 dvd with hamish as director as it’s like watching a strobe light. Far too many cuts, and weird shots. We want to see U2 and feel the camera is transparent. – The Last Waltz was good in that respect…

  5. Didn’t you mean “Because fast cuts + zooming + 3D = vomit?”?

Honest to god I hope Hamish isn’t within 300 miles of this project. He blows!

  7. Hamish Hamilton is definately involved on this project. I spotted him on stage “instructing” some cameramen right before Franz Ferdinand’s opening.

  9. I’ve never been happier to live in a decent proximity to an IMAX theater.

Wake me up when all the Mary J. Blige hoopla has waned. I hope it’s at least a really cool video. That would make up for it.

  11. I liked the Boston DVD, but both Slane and Chicago have been lackluster imo. I’m not sure I would blame it on the director, though. Anton did the fantastic Depeche Mode concert for Songs of Faith and Devotion so he would be a great choice. So would Michel Gondry or Spike Jonze. Although those two might think they’re too avant garde for a U2 video. U2 aren’t cool and probably will never be considered cool again. Them’s the breaks.
